Senior pets are often overlooked in shelters, but we want to highlight some of the many reasons that they could make the perfect companion!

🦴 They have already grown into their personality, so there won’t be many surprises. What you see is what you get!

🦴 They have less energy than a puppy. Not only does this make them easier to train, but they require less activity overall. This may be ideal for people who work long hours or have young children.

🦴 They have already gone through their puppy phase. They are house trained and have finished nibbling on everything in sight.

🦴 Opening your heart to a senior dog feels amazing. Giving them the second chance they deserve and to live out their lives outside of a shelter is all they dream of.

Did you know that dogs can smell up to 100,000 times better than humans? Yep, it’s true! 

Dogs have very powerful noses, and today we’re sharing some of the many ways in which they are superior.

🐾 Dogs can smell in 3-D. According to PetMD, a dog’s brain uses the different odor profiles from each nostril to determine exactly where smelly objects are located.

🐾 Dogs can smell the passage of time. In other words, dogs can follow odors on the ground to determine where a person or animal traveled prior.

🐾 Some breeds have stronger senses of smell than others. Breeds such as hounds, German Shepards, and Labradors, have a better sense of smell than breeds with short noses like French Bulldogs.

🐾 Dogs can breathe in and out at the same time. According to Dr. Michael T. Nappier of the Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, when sniffing, dogs’ noses are designed so that air can move in and out at the same time, creating continuous circulation.

Today, we’re sharing five fun facts about dogs eyes and how they function!

👁 Contrary to popular belief, dogs aren’t color blind. They see colors on a different spectrum than humans do.

👁 Dogs have excellent night vision (7x better than people, to be exact)

👁 Dogs have a third eyelid.

👁 The average dog has brown eyes. Some breeds (i.e. Huskies, Australian Shepards) have blue eyes.

👁 Two different colors eyes in dogs is called heterochromia. It can be genetically inherited, or developed after an eye injury.

1. Make sure your pet has proper ID on them at all times.
2. Exercise your pet early in the day so they are tired out by evening.
3. During fireworks, play the TV or familiar sounds to distract your dog.
4. Build your dog a cozy den or area they may to isolate themselves in.
5. Behave normally to show your dog that they have nothing to be scared of.

Are you protecting your dogs paws during the summer heat? 🐾

Man-made surfaces such as sidewalks, asphalt, and artificial grass can reach high temperatures that will burn your dogs paw pads.

If you think your dogs paw pads may be burned, consult your veterinarian!

Signs that your pups paws may be burned may include discoloration, blisters, limping, or licking of the paws.

Always remember, if the surface is too hot for you to walk barefoot, it's too hot for them, too!
