This Sunday at RVA’s Black Farmers Market is our first installment of The Black Farmers Experience with our partners , where Chef Jason of will host live cooking demonstrations featuring fresh produce and goods from our vendors! 🧑🏾‍🍳🥬🥕🍆🥒

I attended the most amazing and delicious meal last night with great company. Ms. Leni shared memories of her life, family and food with the group. and the entire crew took those stories and made the most flavorful and soulful food and drink I have ever eaten. Who knew I would crave more split pea soup 🤷🏾‍♀️.

Thank you Leah for trusting myself, Farmer Obar and to provide some of the produce for this meal. I truly appreciate your continued support of our small black owned farms. 👊🏾💚

Some great programs are happening in Petersburg. I'm proud to be able to contribute produce! Let's eat good but also eat for our health 💪🏾

📣Today is week 5 of our 24 week program with the Petersburg Public Library, the Healthy Living and Learning Center and the Morris Cardiovascular & Risk Reduction Center to provide 25 Petersburg residents (patients of Dr. Morris) with a bag of fresh, local produce every week at the Market at PPL! 🥒🥕🍅

🌱Produce this week include farmers from River Street Market: Microgreens from Healing Hope Urban Gardens , Red Leaf Lettuce from All Good Things Farm, Broccoli, Yellow Squash, Zucchini and Yellow Onion from Hill Crest Farm and Fresh Herbs from Fox’s Garden. Other local produce includes Raspberries from Agriberry Farm and CSA. Eat the rainbow! 🌈

Finally got the chance to play with my newish toy on Sunday! 😁 I got this herbal distillation kit on sale last year with the hopes of crafting my own essential oils and hydrosol mixtures from herbs grown on the farm.

First herb up is lemon balm. It grows abundantly at our secondary site. Of course no pesticide or herbicides used at all, just good ole fashioned "let nature take its course". Lemon balm does not yield a lot of essential oils but the hydrosol still contains plenty of good properties that we want!

I typically use lemon balm in my teas and other drinks. Been studying up on all its benefits and will be making some body/room sprays soon.

Other herbs I will steam distill growing at the farm:
Mint
Oregano
Thyme
Rosemary
Basil
Lavender (next year)

Strawberry Galore right now! HHUG will definitely have delicious organically grown strawberries for sale next year! 🍓🙌🏾

I'm also playing around with making vegan fruit snacks with the fresh strawberries.

I'm getting back to cooking more: locally raised beef short ribs from , fresh herbs from the farm.

A beautiful beet harvested at the farm and tons of plants to get in the ground.

I'll be at the farm tomorrow after 4:30 if anyone wants to come by and help plant! 😁🙏🏾

It feels good to go out in the rain and harvest part of our dinner for tonight. Can't wait to try this Salanova lettuce to see what all the hype is about.

Also, go me on this bountiful strawberry harvest plus I got plenty more still ripening 😁🍓.

We will be this Saturday with this lettuce mix and a lot more goodies!

Just a few of the things we are growing right now at the farm this past week:
nasturtium
cabbage
kousa squash
Salanova lettuce
kale
dill
radish
oregano

Peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, basil, marigolds and beans were planted.

Watermelon, sunflowers, cucumbers, okra, and more flowers will be planted this weekend

More summer squash, swiss chard, and bok choy direct seeded also.

Hey, how is everyone doing?

Me, I've been laying low, resting (physically & mentally);

Attended 2 wonderful dinners curated by some
amazing women chefs and their teams
-one that benefited
-the other a tribute to Edna Lewis where and I provided some produce

I celebrated 11 years of marriage with my beautiful wife🥰
I clean up pretty nicely😂🙌🏾

Don't worry though, we have also been busy on the farm! Planting seeds and seedlings, cleaning up beds, and just enjoying being outside. 😁
