“It’s been going on for months and I don’t know what to do. Please help me fix this!” — I struggle to understand why some wait until the last minute to look into training because they “didn’t need it until now”. Or they avoided it in fear of being deemed incapable of doing it themselves. We need to normalize dog training in and of itself. Normalize hiring a dog trainer early as a positive step towards setting your dog up for success; not a failure as a guardian, as if you’re expected to be an expert in all things dog simply because you have one. And, more importantly, normalize the mindset that no dog is “bad or dumb” because they are receiving or require training.

Often I hear - “I never had to worry about something like this with my last dog.” or “Jane Doe doesn’t have this issue with their puppy, what am I doing wrong?” Your dog is still an individual with their own mind, personality and way of learning/processing their environment. Comparing your dog to someone else’s, or a dog you had in the past, isn’t conducive to setting you up for success. We have to start thinking of dog training as more of a preventative measure instead of a hail mary when the going gets tough. It’s kind of like not going to the dentist because the toothache is tolerable.. until it’s not. Believe me, I’m a champ when it comes to avoiding the dentist, but that shouldn’t be how it is when it comes to finding the support of a dog trainer.

Also, please be careful when seeking advice regarding your dog! I can’t scream this enough. Your aunt who has had dogs their whole life, the social media account with a large following that says “this worked for me”, or your neighbor who knows someone, doesn’t count as a qualified person to give you sound advice on the matters regarding your dog. Find a certified force-free trainer if you want to work with someone who will be there for both of you and prioritize strengthening the dog-human bond from day one! There is zero shame in hiring a trainer and it’s always better to be proactive instead of reactive! Your dog will thank you for it in more ways than one.

Puppy biting can become an overwhelming—and painful— problem as your puppy ages. However, it’s not the end-all be-all of your puppy’s future; or your hands, for that matter!

When we break it down into parts, we look at what puppy biting actually is. It’s a completely normal and expected behavior! I KNOW, whaaat. So, no, your puppy is not “out to get you”. A majority of the time, your puppy is not even being aggressive, or showing early signs of becoming an aggressive dog. A common misconception. The following are tips on what to do and NOT to do when you’re working through this obstacle with your little one.

To start off, it’s best to make sure the foundation of their needs have been met. This means all forms of physical exercise, mental enrichment, nutrition and socialization have been exhausted. If these needs have not been met, don’t pass go, do not collect $200.

Living with a baby shark, common knowledge brings many owners to yell or use physical corrections. This includes smacking their nose, clamping their mouth shut or pinching/holding their tongue until they cry. These are unnecessary methods and can cause the problem to become worse; despite the testimonials of believers in these methods. The point is that it doesn’t teach your puppy what they should be doing INSTEAD of biting!

What should you do instead? Redirect or remove!
• Use a novel toy/chew to redirect them to a “legal” item to put their mouth on. ‘Novel’ refers to something they don’t have access to very often, making it a much more interesting target.
• Having your puppy on a drag line can be helpful, too. If play gets too rough, calmly walk them away from the stimulus to a playpen, behind a baby gate or into another room. You can even pair this with a redirection. These removals do not need to be full time outs, a minute or less should do.
• Train instead! Work on that sit, shake or down! Get their mind focused on something more rewarding and mentally involved than chewing on your shoe laces.

It’s not an overnight fix, but if you’re vigilant, consistent and open-minded, you’ll get there!
