สายพันธุุุุุุุุุุุุุุุุุุ์ที่มีต้นกำเนิดจากโลว์แลนด์ (lowland) ชายแดนระหว่างประเทศอังกฤษกับสก็อตแลนด์ ย้อนประวัติกลับไปถึงช่วงคริสตศักราชที่ 1700 บรรพบุรุษของสุนัขพันธุ์นี้มาจากคอลลี่พันธุ์อื่นๆ เช่น แบร์ด คอลลี่ (ฺBearded collie) และสก็อต คอลลี่ (Scotch collie) ทั้งนี้นักประวัติศาสตร์บางคนเชื่อว่ามีสายพันธุ์สแปเนียลผสมอยู่ด้วย สุนัขพันธุ์บอร์เดอร์ คอลลี่ เป็นสุนัขที่กระตือรือล้น ชอบทำงาน เหมาะสำหรับการเลี้ยงในชนบท หากไม่มีกิจกรรมให้เขาทำ เขาจะไม่มีความสุขและมีพฤติกรรมที่ไม่พึงประสงค์ได้ ฉลาด มีไหวพริบมาก เรียนรู้เร็ว และตอบสนองต่อคำชมได้ดี
เนื่องจากมีสัญชาตญาณของสุนัขต้อนฝูงสัตว์ จึงปกป้องครอบครัวและถิ่นได้ดี เป็นสุนัขเฝ้ายามที่ยอดเยี่ยม ดูแลเด็กในครอบครัว เข้าได้ดีกับเด็กหรือสัตว์เลี้ยงอื่นในครอบครัวที่เลี้ยงมาด้วยกัน
