SNIFFY SNOOTS PET SERVICES ACKWORTH

Offering a holiday cover pet care and feeding service for all your cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, small mammals, birds and fish in the Ackworth area. I am a fully insured, qualified Veterinary Nurse with 25 years experience caring for small animals. You can leave your precious pets in the comfort of their own home, thus reducing their stress while you are away and

in the knowledge that they will be cared for as I would my own pets. I offer once or twice daily home visits in the Ackworth area to feed, water, clean litter trays & cages as necessary and a bit of tlc for your small pets (*sorry no dogs/dog walking service available at present). Additionally I can administer medications (there is a small surcharge if your pet doesn’t take the medications in their dinner). Please note: Although I am actively working in Veterinary Practice on a part time basis, all services provided under Sniffy Snoots Pet Care are NOT connected to any Veterinary Practice. As such I am NOT working as a Veterinary Nurse whilst providing this service and therefore am unable to offer any Veterinary advice or treatments. What I CAN offer is my many years of experience looking after a variety of small animals, a caring nature and a drive to keep our pets safe and happy.

☀️HEAT STROKE PREVENTION☀️
A couple of days late but here's my top tips to prevent heat stroke:
🔥Walk dogs early in the morning and late at night when it is cooler. If you need to miss a walk then this is better than walking when the weather is hot.
🔥Keep fans on in the house if your house is warm and provide cooling mats. Close curtains to keep your pet's room shaded from the full sun.
🔥Always have fresh cool water available.
🔥Limit play time in the garden when the sun is hot and check the temperature of your patios and fake grass as they can get really hot!
🔥Be especially vigilant with brachcephalic breeds and staffies but no breed is out of danger.
🔥Never leave them in the car, even for a few minutes.
🔥Small furries cages and hutches should be shaded and cool packs can be put inside to keep the cages a more comfortable temperature (use pet safe filled ones and try to attach them out of reach).
🔥Put ice cubes into small pets water bottles to keep them cool for longer.
🔥Follow the guidelines in my other post if you think your pet has heat stroke.

Attached is a pic of my two silly sun worshippers enjoying 5 minutes outside as they have no sense 😬 I had to shower the grass down first as it was too hot for their feet at 11am! The big grey "Wallace" was really feeling it after just 5 minutes and he's obviously not a brachy.

🌞I just thought I'd share the latest treatment info for heatstroke. We no longer recommend wet towels as they quickly heat up with the pet's body temperature and can then actually contribute to the retention of body heat 🌞
*Preventative info in separate post.

If your pet is suffering from heat stroke:
1) Move to a cool area. Shade and preferably a fan.
2) Pour or shower over water cooler than the pets body temperature, so basically cool water, avoiding the face.
3) Keep doing this. Water and a fan is preferable.
4) Call your vet. All vets provide a 24 hour service, so just call your usual day vet's phone number and if it is out of hours you will be transferred or given the phone number for their out of hours service.

Henry's out and the cats are nowhere to be seen 😆 I always try to leave your house just as I found it (at least the rooms I have access to for your pets needs) so if you find cat litter everywhere or they've trashed the place then the little darlings have done it after my final visit 😹😼😽

Let's talk Heat Stroke...

These are my silly gang "enjoying" a sunbathe in the garden. Looks nice eh?

What dangers do you see?

1) 🔥 HOT GRASS.
Artificial grass gets really hot in the sun! Always check your grass before letting your pets out when it's hot.
The pavements are the same and can cause paws to become very sore.

2) 🥵 HEAT STROKE.
My gang would have stayed out there for the forseable. They can't decide how long is safe. That's our job.
I left them there 5 minutes while I brought in the washing. If any of them had been brachycephalic or a fluffy breed it would have been 1 minute to allow toileting only.
I do let my cats out when it's hot but make sure the cat flap is open and they have a shelter and fresh water in the garden. Cats do tend to fare better than dogs when it comes to heat stroke but I would never leave a cat in a hot area/room with no shade/water.

🔥 MY TOP TIPS FOR THE HOT WEATHER 🔥

🌞 Check the temperature of your grass.

🌞 Don't leave dogs outside or in hot rooms. Close or part close curtains to create shade and provide a fan if possible.
Make sure any pet cages are also in shady areas and keep water topped up, fresh and cold.

😺 Keep cat flaps open and provide shade and fresh water outside.

🐰🐹 Rabbits and Guinea Pigs also get heat stroke. Always provide shade in the hutch and run. Add a few ice cubes to water bowls and put a frozen bottle of water in the hutch to help cool.down the area, or even better provide a fan gently blowing into half of the hutch/run but make sure all cables are out of nibble reach.

🦮 Walk your dogs very early or late, when the pavements are cooler (check with your hand) and the air temperature isn't so hot. Take a bottle of water and a bowl with your poo bags. Always take your phone.

🌞 Take extreme care with brachycephalic breeds. No walking in the heat!

🌞 Don't leave dogs in cars, even for a few minutes.

🔥 If your pet is showing signs of heat stroke, cool down by pouring cool/tepid water over them (not towels soaked in water and not very cold water) and get them to a vets immediately.

Now time to relax and enjoy the sunshine while it lasts!

This frosty weather brings with it the danger of ethylene glycol poisoning in our cats as people fill up their coolant/antifreeze.
Always take care not to spill any and thoroughly flush away any spillages with lots of water.
Click on the link below to see the early signs of poisoning and contact your vets immediately if you think your cat may have ingested antifreeze.

Antifreeze poisoning is one of the biggest dangers for cats. Make sure you can spot the signs:

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year and hoping you all have a great evening!

Here's my top tips for keeping your pets safe and reducing fear this evening:

CATS
🐈‍⬛ I'd recommend keeping your cats in during the day on the 31st in case they decide to stay out later than usual. Then take care not to accidentally let them out after dark as they may get a little sneaky!
(Remember to provide a litter tray if they usually toilet outdoors).
🐈‍⬛ Keep the tv or some music on to mask the sound and the curtains closed.
🐈‍⬛ Allow them to hide away or come to you for comfort, whichever they prefer.

DOGS
🐕 Walk your dogs earlier in the evening but allow them out to toilet in a safe enclosed area (or on the lead) a little later so they do not need to go out during the fireworks.
🐕 Provide a safe hidey space for your dog to use but you can offer comfort if they prefer to sit with you. Try not to show any stress that you may feel.
🐕 Keep the tv or music on to mask the firework noise and close the curtains.
🐕 Don't punish your dog or shout at them if their behaviour becomes difficult during the fireworks.
🐕 If your dog gets very stressed during fireworks consider contacting your vet prior to Bonfire Night and New Years Eve next year.
Call at least 3 to 4 weeks before treatment is needed as some noise phobia treatments need to be started a while before the event and depending on the treatment needed your pet may need a medical checkover first.

OUTDOOR SMALL FURRIES
🐇 If possible move your pets hutch onto a cool indoor area such as a utility room or garage overnight.
🐇 Fill the bed area with straw (fluff it up so your pet can hide in the middle).
🐇 Cover the hutch with a piece of carpet or duvet or similar to help reduce the noise (whilst ensuring adequate ventilation).
🐇 Monitor your pet's food intake and droppings overnight and the following morning (particularly rabbits - contact your vet if your rabbit stops eating and/or pooping overnight).

INDOOR SMALL ANIMALS
🐁🐇🦜🦎 Close the curtains and put on the tv or some music to mask the firework noise.
Monitor food intake, particularly rabbits, as noted above.

🌲We hope everyone's having a great Christmas🌲

Lovely Moppet 😍 is my Christmas pet sit and has been a bit poorly recently so it was a worry for her owners to leave her.
She's been doing really well, enjoying lots of fuss and I'm able to monitor her closely for any symptoms related to her condition, which I'm happy to say there haven't been 😸

12/12/2022

There's always a massive increase in toxin ingestion cases at the vets this time of year. Most commonly raisin-containing foods such as mince pies and christmas cake, and chocolate.
Take care to keep potential toxins out of the reach of your pets
Please follow the link below for a more comprehensive list of christmas toxins and contact your vets immediately (including out of hours) if your pet ingests any of these foods as the quicker treatment can be started, the better your pet's chances of recovery.
