Fine Tilth Farm A small urban farm in Draper, Utah. We grow a variety of produce using low-till organic methods.

Red-leaf vegetable amaranth, aka Red Callaloo. Not only is it beautiful but it’s also a superfood that thrives in the heat - just like all the pigw**d (also an amaranth) that takes over your garden as a w**d in the summer.

I have a small amount of this available as part of our spring plant sale - but it’s exceptionally easy to grow from seed if you prefer! It’s great as a spinach substitute for when the weather gets hot.

Friends and neighbors, garden starts are now available for ordering on our website. Hope you’ll swing on by and reserve some seedlings for your very own modern-day victory garden.

Order any time until May 1st to reserve your plants, and we’ll continue to grow them out to be ready for pickup on May 4th (Star Wars Day!). Pickups will also be available the following Saturday, May 11th, at the farm in Draper.

Daikon radish fan? These beauties are incredible this time of year. So much crispy crunch, with nary a hint of the typical radish spice. I’ll have them Saturday at the final of the year.

These glowing cabbages are just one of the purple things we’ll have for you at the opening day of the winter market tomorrow.

We’ll also have plenty of green things, orange things, and other shades of vegetables, too. The spinach harvest this week is especially beautiful, and I’m also delighted to have plenty of winter squash and sweet potatoes for your autumn feasts.

The winter market has moved a block south this year, still in the Gateway at 110 South Rio Grande Street. Hope to see you there tomorrow, 10-1. You’ll find us at the first spot on the left as you enter.

The final summer is tomorrow! Despite it nearing the end of October, our little farm is bursting at the seams with vegetables, and I’ll bring as much as I can fit down to Pioneer Park for one last hurrah.

We’ll have piles of root vegetables, mountains of leafy greens, four or five types of kale, lettuce, bok choy, microgreens, quite a few apples, plenty of cabbages, and some other stuff I can’t even remember.

Last chance for local bounty! (For a few weeks at least, then I’ll be making this exact same post about the SLC Winter Market.)

Tomorrow is the much-hyped solar eclipse, and that means that end times are upon us.

That’s right, end times for the farmers market season! Saturday is the penultimate summer market, and Sunday will be the final Sunday market for the year!

Come on out and stock up! No need to put on your sun block, the moon will take care of that for us. We’re bringing everything we can, I’m concerned I might break the axles of my poor market trailer.

We’ll have tons of cabbage, kohlrabi, fennel, arugula, salad mix, lettuce heads, bok choy, microgreens, a huge pile of carrots, turnips, and radishes, never-sprayed apples, the last of the tomatoes and cucumbers, and more.

24/09/2023

I set up the self-serve (self-help?) farm stand this morning, with some of the bonkers numbers of tomatoes from this week. Also microgreens, pears, and cucumbers. Come on by 12820 Fort street in Draper and take home some of the tomato bounty. Please?

You may have misheard me when you thought that I said I was only going to the Draper Saturday market this weekend.

What I actually said was, I’m going to pick a whole nother mess of pickling cucumbers and meet you at tomorrow.

They’re much smaller this picking so if you prefer petite pickles, come on down tomorrow 9-1 and get a load of them.

We’ll also have plentiful microgreens, spinach , kale, peaches, and more.

PSA - We have always used culinary/treated water to dunk/cool/rinse greens after harvest. (Technically, we’re not allowed to “wash” veggies without a commercial and inspected facility, so we don’t claim to wash anything and insist that you wash at home before eating).

However, with recent reports of E. Coli in Lehi secondary water (not in Draper’s water, so we remain unaffected), we’ll start to add a peroxyacetic acid disinfectant to our culinary rinse water for vegetables and greens. This is an industry-standard organic-allowed disinfectant that kills pathogens and also as a side effect increases shelf life of most vegetables.

But, you should continue to rinse all your farmers market purchases before consumption - as far as I’m aware no small farms in Utah sell produce that is washed-and-ready-to-eat.

I took the insect netting off one of our covered peach trees and we harvested a beautiful batch never-sprayed-with-anything juicy, sweet peaches. Naturally the tag fell off the tree so I’m not entirely sure what variety these are. But they’re pretty tasty!

I’ll have these along with plenty other goodies this weekend - we’ll only be at the Draper Market this weekend. I’ve been needing a break and a weekend with only 1 quiet market might be as close as I get to a weekend off this season. I hope you’ll come and see us Saturday 9-1 at the Ballard Arena in Draper. This will probably be our last time attending the Draper Market this season.

The following weekend is shaping up to be a big harvest so we’ll be back at our regular downtown market and Wheeler Farm then.

I’m fortunate for this opportunity to plant a round of crops for late fall and winter in this newly constructed 24x96 high tunnel. My generous neighbor near the mouth of Little Cottwood Canyon just built this tunnel and I think he was so tired of the project after completing it that he was eager to have me deal with it for a while. He disappeared to Alaska and handed me the keys! I’ll fill it up with carrots, beets, and kale for the winter market.

Say hello to Tokyo Bekana - a very mild and vibrant Asian green - buttery leaves with a crunchy midrib. It’s like Napa cabbage, lettuce, and bok choy all at the same time. Great raw in salad, as a lettuce substitute, or as a cooked green.

Last week I had it bagged, this week we have bunches of full-grown, and the stem is crunchy and juicy - come try some this weekend, we’ll have a mountain of it!

Also on the fresh sheet for this weekend: hundreds of pounds of heirloom and cherry tomatoes, salad mix, cucumbers, shish*to peppers, some early apples, potatoes, a stack of arugula, an even bigger stack of spinach, and the biggest stack ever of carrots - and more!

Oops, I did it again. Another couple hundred pounds of big, juicy heirlooms harvested. These tomatoes have really turned it up to 11 in the past week. Anticipating that I’ll harvest this much again tomorrow, we’re not going to hold these for weekend markets. I’ll be headed over the mighty Wasatch range tomorrow and will have these heirlooms, cherry tomatoes, garlic, and cucumbers at the . Wednesday, 11-5 at the Canyons lower parking lot (right off Rt. 224). See you there! I promise that it will be 15 degrees cooler than SLC.

It’s not even going to be hot, only 105 or so.

These “Unagi” variety of Japanese cucumbers are something special! Thin and tender skin, sweet and crisp flesh, and tiny seeds. Plus, our good old dog of yesteryear was named Unagi, so they’re doubly special - he probably would have liked them too! First harvest of cucumbers for tomorrow at the .

We also have stacks of fresh onions, celery, salad mix, lettuce, beets, basil, herbs, fennel, kohlrabi, microgreens, and much more.

Happy to be bringing spinach back to markets after a heat hiatus. Spinach won’t germinate in the summer heat but we took advantage of the brief cool spell a few weeks ago to get some planted - it looks great! tomorrow and market Sunday. See you there, Popeye.

“There's the wonderful love of a beautiful maid,
And the love of a staunch true man,
And the love of a baby that's unafraid-
All have existed since time began.

But the most wonderful love, the Love of all loves,
Even greater than the love for Mother,
Is the infinite, tenderest, passionate love
Of one dead drunk for another.”

Clearly this poet never pulled carrots from the garden - because intertwined carrots is the true greatest love. And we’ll have them in plentiful supply this weekend at the on Saturday and the Sunday Market

This week we have limited amounts of this Kamonasu, or Kamo eggplant - “the queen of eggplants”. This highly regarded variety from Kyoto, Japan is prized for its creamy, dense flesh and sweet flavor. Git yerself some this Sunday at the Sunday Market.
