Removing a pup from it's mom and littermates too young can lead to serious temperament and communication issues that can be extremely difficult for the average pet owner to overcome.
So how young is too young? Research shows that pups removed at 6 weeks of age are at a much higher risk than pups 8 weeks of age of developing behavioral problems. Just an additional 2 weeks can make a drastic difference. This is a crucial time for brain development and puppies learn communication, social skills, impulse control, and so much more from both mom and their siblings.
It has generally been accepted by pet owners that puppies can leave for a new home at 6 weeks of age. There are also many backyard breeders and puppy mills willing to let this happen. But a reputable breeder understands the skills needed to be a well balanced, well rounded, healthy and happy canine means keeping pups with mom and siblings until at least 8 weeks of age, although 10-12 weeks is preferable
