Gray Laced Satin Pair-Available

The rooster is frizzled. The hen is laying.
They are penned together so eggs are pure color, except a chance of a silkie feathering since there was also a gray silkie rooster with them.

I’ve been hanging onto this pair trying to decide if I want to add showgirls to my white pen. But I’ve decided against it, even though I think they are so cute!

❄️ WINTER & CHICKENS ❄️

Lots of people ask me about their chickens and how to keep them warm. I decided to see just how warm chickens stay during winter by getting thermometers. Let me explain.

The temperature currently where I am at night is 17 degrees (thermometer #2).

I have my coops covered in clear tarps to keep wind and rain out of the coops. They have cat condo boxes with pine shavings inside that they sleep in.

Inside their coop (not the boxes they sleep in), is already 12 degrees warmer than the outside temperature, just by adding the clear tarps. (Thermometer #3)

Inside their boxes (where they sleep), is 33 degrees warmer than the outside temperature. (Thermometer #1). It is 50 degrees when in the box they cuddle up in compared to 17 degrees outside!

Thermometer #4 is my inside home temperature, but it was sitting up against a window in order to get signal. When it’s placed in the middle of my home, the inside temperature reads the same as my home thermostat, so it is accurate.

The main tip for winter is to keep chickens dry & keep the wind off of them! 🥶

First, Happy New Year! If you aren’t following me, please do!

Currently, I am searching for a true black silkie cockerel or rooster— breeder quality only. Shipping is fine, & expected. Please let me know if you have one or know of someone who might. I am extremely picky so it will have to be someone with great quality birds.

I am letting go of a lot of my flock in order to better the colors of my breeding stock. I plan to enter in the Arkansas Spring & Fall poultry shows as well as the fair this year. So I am simply letting go of colors & types that will not prove worth my time.

This means I will be posting these colors & types up for sale in the near future, & some are already posted:

-Chocolates/Mauves/Mauve Splash Pen
-Buffs (the frizzles and s**t buffs will go)
-Some paints probably
-All of my Gray Laced Satins & Frizzles
-Lavenders (this pen will probably be regrettable)

And then also working towards clearing out my “extra” pen of birds as pet quality. There are about a dozen roosters to find homes for and a couple more hens that aren’t posted.

So, if you are on the hunt for some silkies & want some, message me and let me know what you are looking for and I’ll try to contact you before I advertise.

Here it is, middle of December, with 2 frizzle Black Mottled hens that want to be moms. Because the one on the right was such a good mom last time, I decided to let her try. Never have I allowed this in winter but I’m hoping she instinctively keeps them warmer, even though it’s so cold. Worst case scenario, I’ll move them inside. She became broody & then her daughter decided she also wanted to be a mom. This chapter is called #WinterSilkies ❄️

Yall, I change my mind on coops so much that my husband is second guessing what he married & the concrete truck getting stuck in our yard nearly took out our 12 year marriage but we survived. 😄 we needed to raise the elevation on this coop because it floods in the back. This used to be my Brahma & duck coop and this is the reason I decided to sell them. I wanted to remodel this coop specifically for silkies. Looking forward to trying out the drainage feature we added and hoping it works!

Merek’s Protection:Let’s talk about Merek’s in poultry! (But please be kind ☺️)This is a very controversial topic. This video is to educate, not persuade or influence. Please talk with a vet if you decide to go this route. Hatcheries offer this protection for an additional fee. The ingredients are purchased through Valley Vet. The powder in the little vial has to stay chilled. Here’s the short version of steps I take:🟡Withdrawl 50ml of the dilution.🟡Break the powder into fourths with tweezers and mix in 1/4 of the powder into the dilution.🟡Withdrawl 0.2cc into the syringe.🟡Use rubbing alcohol to clean & see skin better. 🟡Pinch skin on the neck. Inject solution. Should make a little bubble under the skin. ⚪️Has to be done within 24 hours after hatch. What I’m saying is…this works for me & mine. This gives my customers a layer of extra protection for their flock. There has been ZERO cons to doing this. I’ve done this literally hundreds of times. There are very few breeders who do this that I know of (at least in the silkie community). I only purchase chicks from those few who do. Want to learn how I’ve healed several chickens that had open wounds? Fox, raccoon, dog wounds! Mix this cheap & easy solution into a spray bottle. Spray the wound at least 3x a day. Make fresh daily! Chickens are pretty resilient! Comment below if you’ve used this before! Does it work for you?

These dang hens are so picky! I tried adding a border to keep them from throwing it all in the floor, so now they scoop it inside the cage. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Looking for recommendations.
