Lots of new life on the farm this week. In the wee hours of Monday, we welcomed five new puppies. Sapphire did not have the easiest delivery and there were definitely some odd in the process, but mom and babies are all strong and well. Puppies are named after characters from one of my favourite Christmas movies, Prep and Landing. Meet Lanny, Wayne, Noel, Miss Molly and Magee! This is our last planned litter so it is a very bittersweet time for me. Our lives are moving in a different direction now, and showing dogs doesnāt fit as well. Itās very difficult to let go of something that was such a big part of my life for more than a decade. Iāll always have fond memories of the people and dogs that were a part of that journey. Some of those peeps will be a part of my life forever! We will still have wieners in our home for a long time, these dogs are little treasures.
Yesterday was an exciting day and marks the beginning of a new era! We brought home our first two Nigerian dwarf goat does! They are doing great and Macy is already eating out of my hands. ā¤ļø
Jazz needs a little more convincing, āstranger dangerā still applies. Iām determined that sheāll be snuggling in no time at all. I can hardly wait for spring and fresh milk! Soap, cheese, yogurtā¦there are all kinds of things im excited to make but honestly, until there are more does, we will likely just drink the milk.
apparently, because Nigerian dwarf goat milk is so high in butterfat, most people canāt distinguish between it and cows milk. I CANāT WAIT!
Sometimes the future steps on the heels of the past. This week is a perfect example. For a while, my heart will hurt as I mourn the loss of a life I loved so much, but life continues to move forward and grief is softened by the ever newness of life. Itās never boring. There is always some new lesson, some new joy, some new thing to find, explore and appreciate. I can hardly wait to meet all the people who will benefit and be blessed by this new venture.
Self sufficiency, primitive skills and homesteading are long time hopes, now a reality. Itās not always easy, itās not always fun but itās always been my dream and now Iām living it.
Thanks Stan, for being so supportive of my crazy ideas. Love you Babe, 23 years and still going strong!
