Happy 4th of July! As you know, it’s that time for the big bangs, loud booms and shaking houses. That means some pets may be stressed more than normal. Here are some things to help your pets:
🧨 Thundershirts
🧨 Sedatives- nonprescription such as Benadryl, K9 CBD or K9 Melatonin can be helpful if you are unable to get a prescription sedative.
🧨 Extra Exercise
🧨 White noise or loud radio/TV
🧨 Covered crate (leave the door open, put it in the quietest room)
🧨 Don’t feed breakfast, or very little of it. Any small sounds give them a treat, they can at least start associating the sound with something positive. A hungry dog is a motivated dog! Use this as a training opportunity!
[NOTE: If your dog has an extreme fear, I recommend seeing a trainer prior to the next event, being New Year’s. If you would like sound desensitization training, please reach out.]

🐾 PUPPY NAIL TRIMMING TRAINING VIDEO 🐾
I want to take the opportunity to provide some tips on teaching puppies how to better tolerate and possibly even like nail trims. I want to make a disclosure that every puppy is different and may take to different approaches, this is just ONE way of training puppies for nails.
Mabel here is an almost 6 month old puppy, this being the 2nd visit with me. She is a developing puppy going through phases.
🐾 Her current phase? Being mouthy. Like many puppies, this is common. She is teething and exploring the world with her mouth, BUT she’s also a herding breed notorious for controlling things with their mouths. I wanted to take the time to show you what that looks like and how to address the behavior.
🐾 What’s different this time? She wants to control what I’m doing with her mouth. If I were to stop she would learn that behavior works. So you’ll see a few times I simply ignore the behavior, then mark when she’s doing what is desired.
🐾 Why do I let her touch the dremel? Because it’s uncomfortable for her. It’s like when a child touches a hot stove, they discover it’s uncomfortable and generally avoid doing the action again.
🐾 Was I hurting her when she cried? No. She wants me to think I am to get me to stop (puppies are great at playing gullible people). She is throwing a mild temper tantrum to see if it will get me to stop. She has learned that behavior doesn’t work and tries another.
🐾 What treats was I using? I used a bacon cheddar flavored squeeze cheese. I try to use high value rewards for challenges like nail trimming. I encourage puppies to be on an empty tummy so they are more motivated to work for their food.

Ace is sure to tell you all about how he scared off all the big bad deer around his home. His stories are very detail oriented 🤣
(Don’t mind all the hair on the walls, Ace’s brother Zuse is blowing his summer coat)
