The RCACP page is intended to assist in the networking of available animals in our care to the public and to area rescues. By participating on this page, you are agreeing to our commenting policy, outlined below. We reserve the right to delete posts on our page containing any of the following elements:

In addition to deleting posts containing any of the listed elements, we will remove parties from our page who repeatedly violate this policy. We look forward to working together with the community to place the animals in our care. The Regional Center serves as the public animal shelter for the City of Roanoke, the Counties of Botetourt and Roanoke, and the Town of Vinton, and is an “open intake facility”. The Regional Center primarily handles stray animals picked up by the Animal Control Officers employed by the municipalities, but also accepts strays that are found, and animals owned, by citizens of the municipalities served. Each year the Regional Center receives between 4,000 and 5,000 animals. In accordance with Virginia law, stray animals are held for a minimum of ten (10) days if the animal has any form of identification and five (5) days if the animal has no identification. There is no minimum holding period for animals relinquished by owners, but the Regional Center endeavors to hold animals relinquished by owners for a minimum of two (2) days. While at the Regional Center, animals who have completed their hold time and not been claimed, or have been relinquished by their owners, are evaluated. Animals that are considered to be healthy, treatable and/or rehabilitatable are, subject to the availability of space, transferred to the Roanoke Valley SPCA or another rescue organization for adoption. Animals that are not considered to be healthy, treatable or rehabilitatable, are humanely euthanized once the animal has been held for the required length of time. Stop by RCACP - 1510 Baldwin Ave NE Roanoke - between 1-5pm this afternoon to meet your new forever friend. Adoption fees are waived with an approved application. We only ask that all members of the family are present for a meet & greet, including other dogs in the home (if adopting a dog). All of our pets are spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines, current on flea/tick/HW medication, and microchipped.
Foster Dog Highlight!!
Noggin' is back from foster care while his foster parents are out of town. As much as they love him, they are hoping he finds his forever home before they return!
From his foster mom:
Noggin is a very sweet boy with lots of love to give. He is down for snuggles all day or down to go on a hike with you. Whatever you’re doing he just wants to be apart of it. He gets along great with other dogs, but not when toys are in the mix. He can be a little possessive over toys with other dogs but not with humans. He is an escape artist!! So secure fencing is preferred. He cannot by tied out due to chewing on the lead.

-cuddle bug!!
-crate trained though no blankets should be in there due to shredding. He does not shred blankets outside of kennel.
-hard toys only, he likes to shred stuffies and eat them.

Pet Pantry Donations!
We are completely out of dry/canned cat food and running low on dog food. The purpose of our pet food pantry is to help those who have fallen on hard time and are struggling to feed their pets. This avoids them having to consider surrendering. We accept any brand/size, and even opened bags of food, as long as they are not expired. Maddie found herself a long ways from home after being picked up as a stray at a local car mechanic shop. Luckily she had a MICROCHIP and we were able to call her mom immediately! Unfortunately, her family had moved out of state, but thanks to a good friend who made the 15 hour drive, Maddie was recently reunited with her family.

Lil Miss Sadie Jane is at the RCACP this evening until about 7pm! She's been in foster with other (BIG) doggies and even cats. She's working on potty/crate training, as well as her basic commands. Sadie is just 4 months old. Her adoption fee is waived with an approved application!
Husky People!!
We have 2 handsome boys who just became available! Tater Tot (white) is about 2 years old. Milton (black/white) is roughly 6 years old. Both boys are neutered, up to date on vaccines, current on flea/tick/HW treatment, and microchipped. Both pups are sweet, but a little shy in shelter. Although, once they warm up to you, we have no doubt they'll make the best companions. Tater Tot and Milton both do well with other dogs, but we do not cat test.

We are completely out of dry and wet cat food. We have no canned dog food and only 1 bag of dry food left. ☹️ Our pet pantry is dependent on donations from the community. We offer food in an attempt to keep pets and their families together, despite any financial burdens they may face. Donations can be dropped off Monday-Saturday between 9am-5pm. It's and we want you to meet Scarlett! This beauty is originally from Botetourt County – she came in as a stray in October 2023. She is almost 2 years old and she has spent the last year in and out of the shelter. She is a typical bloodhound in that she needs a job where she can use her intellect and her nose. She’s not an apartment dog and she’s not a dog that you can leave to her own devices. She needs patience and understanding and consistent training to be the best dog she can be. She has not had the best luck in finding that perfect home so we are hoping that the third time is a charm! She loves people and kids and would be a great companion to take hiking or walking on the greenway. She will go where her nose leads her! She’s a beautiful girl with a sweet personality and she deserves a chance to be someone’s best friend. She is spayed, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped and ready for a home today! Just look at those eyes!!

Today is National Lost Dog Awareness Day! We're sharing how to visit our website to search for your missing pet. We update our stray page daily (except Sundays), as pets come in, so we always suggest checking frequently. If you aren't seeing your pet, the next step is to fill out a lost pet report. Please email us a photo of your pet as well- [email protected]. Alternatively, if you've found a missing pet, we have a found report for you to fill out. Once received, we will work on our end to reunite the missing pet with their owner. Please make sure to bring the pet to a local vet or the RCACP to be scanned for a microchip.
🐶 Adoptable Puppy Highlights 🐶 Ruckus & Blanca are besties! Blanca is a female, 8-month-old pittie pup and Ruckus is a male pittie, just 3 months old. Clearly, they get along great with other dogs!! Ruckus is a very vocal player and is still learning proper play etiquette, but Blanca was extremely tolerant with him.
