The Regional Center serves as the public animal shelter for the City of Roanoke, the Counties of Botetourt and Roanoke, and the Town of Vinton, and is an “open intake facility”. The Regional Center primarily handles stray animals picked up by the Animal Control Officers employed by the municipalities, but also accepts strays that are found, and animals owned, by citizens of the municipalities served. Each year the Regional Center receives between 4,000 and 5,000 animals. In accordance with Virginia law, stray animals are held for a minimum of ten (10) days if the animal has any form of identification and five (5) days if the animal has no identification. There is no minimum holding period for animals relinquished by owners, but the Regional Center endeavors to hold animals relinquished by owners for a minimum of two (2) days. While at the Regional Center, animals who have completed their hold time and not been claimed, or have been relinquished by their owners, are evaluated. Animals that are considered to be healthy, treatable and/or rehabilitatable are, subject to the availability of space, transferred to the Roanoke Valley SPCA or another rescue organization for adoption. Animals that are not considered to be healthy, treatable or rehabilitatable, are humanely euthanized once the animal has been held for the required length of time. Special Needs Kittie!

Pixie Stick is looking for a special home because she is positive for Feline Leukemia. FeLV is spread via saliva, nasal secretions, urine, and f***s. For this reason, Pixie will need to be an indoor, one cat household or in a home with cats that have been previously vaccinated against leukemia. Please email us at [email protected] if you think you'd be a good fit for Pixie Stick!

Just a reminder about our RAD trip program!

The weather is gorgeous this week, and there's no better time to take a dog on an adventure. There is no application or appointment needed before hand, just stop by after 9am for a quick form. Let us know what your plan for the day is and we will pair you up with the perfect pup! You can take a stroll on the green way, visit a local pet-friendly brewery or restaurant, or stop by local dog-friendly businesses such as Black Dog Salvage or Mast General Store. Local pet stores like Wag N' Wash - Roanoke, VA and Unleashed Dog Bakery & Boutique even offer a free cookie to our pups!

Our RAD program is perfect for anyone looking to make a difference in the life of a shelter dog or it can be a great way to determine if you're ready to take on the responsibility of adopting. We've even had local business and colleges use this as an opportunity for team building/volunteer hours (Please call ahead if you have a big group coming). Either way, we hope you take advantage of the sunshine this week! ☀️

Donations needed!

Our pet pantry was CLEARED out yesterday afternoon. We are completely out of dry dog and dry cat food. We would hate to have to turn people away, so if you have any food you are no longer in need of or happen to find a good deal at the store (we heard Walmart on Dale ave had some on clearance), please consider bringing it by today!

Our community pet pantry aims to help those who have fallen on hard times, and prevent unnecessary surrenders due to food insecurity.

We are open until 5pm today and tomorrow, and until 7pm on Thursday for donations. We accept any size/brand, and even opened (unexpired) bags. You can also shop our amazon wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/ML3D973N9E49?ref_=wl_share

Thank you in advance for your support!
