On Monday, May 12th, our group was following a post about a loose, skittish dog that was posted on the lost and found pages near Gagel Ave. The person said she had noticed the dog in the area since Friday, wearing a harness with a tie out attached. It was staying towards the back of her apartment complex near the dumpster area. But it would run into the woods, anytime she tried approaching.
I decided to ride out that afternoon since I had a couple free hours to see if I could help. I took my trap with me just in case. In the meantime, someone else posted a picture of him. He had managed to break free of his torn harness and was walking around with it in his mouth. Still not wanting anyone to catch him.
I arrived at the area about 2:15. Didn’t see him right away. So I decided to drive around. Then from a distance, I saw some kids playing, and a black dog happily following them. I drove over and asked the kids if it was their dog. They told me he had been following them around all morning. Several residents came outside and spoke to me and told me no one knew who he belonged to. But he had been in the area for several days.
The poor dog was so hungry. With just a few treats, I slid the leash on him and loaded him in my car. I scanned him for a chip. He wasn’t chipped and he wasn’t neutered. I gave one the guys my card in case someone came by looking for him. I took the dog home with me for a few days to keep him out of the overcrowded shelter, hoping to find a foster. Such a sweet dog, hungry and so many ticks all over him.
The next evening, I received a private message from someone saying they were the original owner. She had seen my post. She told me she had just recently rehomed him (also unable to take him back). The newest owner had sent her pics stating he was doing well, then blocked her. She sent me pics to confirm, it was definitely the same dog.
Unfortunately, she didn’t have any other contact as they had met at a nearby gas station. She too felt he had been dumped.
Thankfully, our group was able to find him local placement, who also held him for his stray hold. Keeping him out of the overcrowded shelter.
UPDATE-
We’ve recently received wonderful news he was adopted by a wonderful family that absolutely adores him! He was a staff favorite from the moment they met him.
Henry is another reminder, if rehoming your dog, to please take the extra precautionary steps to try and ensure their safety.
Please Ask for references, ask for vet references and call the vet. Ask to see where the dog will be living.
We are happy he is safe and onto a better life. Thank you to everyone that posted for help so we could help this little guy!
