Working on building some confidence. Mia, a rescue who lost her eye after a beating, doing great with her new pet parents. She could not have asked for a better mom and dad. She even went through the tunnel today without any hesitation. So proud of her.

Catching up with a last bit of puppy training before I close for the holidays. Mr Tyke. Learning the Down. He is such a fast learner. Also showing off all the ways he can sit and lay down and check out that sideward glance. Love it!

We had some fun last week when we had an adult dog visiting the socialisation class to help the puppies have good experiences with other adult dogs. Not sure who had the most fun. Katryn sure enjoyed herself with all the puppies.

Puppy socialisation classes

The weather was really trying to work against us this week but in the end, we had class. Some photos of some fun activities your puppy will experience. Different textures to walk over, big and small tunnels for the puppies to choose from, the famous ball pond to help with proprioception that all puppies love as well as some small jumps to climb over, a wobble board, a plank to walk over and hula hoops to walk over. Different “weird” human stuff that they can experience and get habituated to. Even a tortoise shell. There were strange sounds and, in the end, a nice tasting of strawberries, carrots, blueberries and some yellow peppers. Everything that dogs may eat and might or might not like. Why be boring. 😉

Finn's mom sent me this video where he is watching Bluey. Dogs see blues, yellows and greens more vividly, so he is really loving this and being deaf he does not need the sound. So grateful to be part of their journey.

MYTH: "Don’t take your puppy anywhere until they're fully vaccinated."

FACT: "The primary and most important time for puppy socialization is the first three months of life. For this reason, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior believes that it should be the *standard of care* for puppies to receive such socialization before they are fully vaccinated. Behavioral issues, not infectious diseases, are the number one cause of death for dogs under three years of age." (AVSAB Position Statement on Puppy Socialization)

FACT: If you wait until your puppy is full vaccinated, you've missed their critical socialization period.

Vets, rescues and breeders who are clinging to the outdated belief that dogs should be prevented from socialization until fully vaccinated are not keeping up with the current research, literature and recommendations from behavior professionals.

Here it is! Exciting news!
Puppy classes and a bonus * puppy parties starting this Tuesday.
Come and join us every Tuesday @ 17:00 for puppy class and 18:00 till 18:30 for a puppy party.
WhatsApp: 083 741 4551
Bookings essential
- Puppy classes are for puppies younger, but not older than 12 weeks to complete the 4-week course at the age of 16 weeks.
- Puppy parties for puppies up till 16 weeks.
* Puppy play is supervised and closely motored. Breed play will be considered, as well as boisterous and shy puppies to make this experience for everybody positive and fun.
* During socialisation, puppies become acclimated or habituated to various stimuli and situations. Puppies learn social skills during carefully controlled, safe interactions with people, dogs, and other animals. They also learn how to explore their world.
* Good socialisation helps your puppy create a positive association with new experiences including objects, sounds, surfaces, physical touch, smells and other animals.
* Initial socialization begins when a puppy is still with his mother and littermates—puppies naturally encounter many sounds and sights in their early environment. Between the age of 3 and 16 weeks, puppies go through a sensitive socialisation period. This is a period of development where puppies learn to communicate and relate to other dogs, people, and the environment. It's the most influential learning period of a dog’s life, and forms the foundation for all future learning.
