Its World Spay Day!
Today, we want to bring to everyone's attention, again, how important it is to sterilise your animals.
Not only does it save lives, it helps control disease, over population and helps reduce unnecessary strain on our welfare systems such as the SPCA!
Humans have a huge role to play in controlling stray animal populations and that starts with sterilisation!

75% population reduction in 10 years. Despite incredible efforts of those on the war front. Let’s not beat around the bush, we need your help. Rhinos and other species of this beautiful planet are falling off the face of it, in your lifetime! Maybe not tomorrow, but on some mundane evening you’ll read- “the last extinct…” So, this may serve as a future “I told you so”, but just maybe it may swerve the brave few to tick the odds just a few inches to the hopeful. To those already giving their everything for these magnificent creatures, “thank you.”

This picture I feel, aptly summarizes the hard weeks at vet school which are JAM PACKED 😉2nd Cardio-respiratory block exam in the books ✅ with ECG analysis etc. this was definitely the most interesting topic studied thus far and I’m looking forward to more material like this in the months ahead👍

~6 years ago I had the privilege of being part of procedure where a new cast was reapplied to where her horn should have been, but was unfortunately hacked off by poachers. This beautiful face is why I do what I do. Couldn’t have picked a more humbling career for myself. Working with these beasties have shown me just how small I am in this big world.

Yesterday I had the absolute pleasure of working on this magnificent white rhino Bull. 5 years from now this sight will unfortunately be a thing of the past as poaching has now ramped up to its precocious levels and conservationists scream for assistance. Please wherever you are, do your part to save these iconic species- we need each and every voice. We need you to take up this mantle.

Rhinos in South Africa are under constant pressure from both environmental change and most of all, us, humans. The Rhino Boma initiative seeks to provide rhinos with a sanctuary away from those pressures within Eastern Cape Game parks. Help us build theses rhino enclosures and in turn you’ll have a crack at getting yourself one of the two spots up for grabs! Transporting 🐺 are tricky for various reasons. For one they are prone to hyperthermic episodes under anesthesia. There are various ways to combat this of course. What is one effective method to cool these beautiful creatures down? Here is a hint, it’s a highly evaporative substance.

Doing annual checkups on these guys is essential in maintaining quality of life. like most animals taken out of the wild live much longer but are prone to diseases as a result of their sedentary lifestyles. Still beautiful and impressive animals though.

Ingonyama! Luckily this gal is asleep- so much respect for these expert predators. Just a sad FYI- lions are extinct in 26 African countries, have lost 95% of their historic range. However with only 20,000 wild lions left in the wild we can turn these numbers around- visit for more info.

It is estimated that elephant populations are a fraction of their original population. Once recorded in their 10s of MILLIONS! The world now houses only 4% of that. #

To successfully manage and protect a rhino population across many fenced game reserves in South Africa, translocations are necessary to prevent inbreeding and maintain appropriate social demographics on individual reserves. It is, therefore, an integral element to rhino conservation that we maximise the success of translocations. Boma confinement is often required, but only a small number of reserves have the funds to build these specially designed enclosures suitable for rhino. ARCC is therefore appealing for donations to help build a series of rhino introduction enclosures or “bomas” across the rhino reserves of the Eastern Cape to help care for the metapopulation.
