Did you know that about 60% of performance/show horses are afflicted with gastric ulcers, with non-performance horses and foals being impacted as well?

Ulcers can develop for many reasons related to diet, housing, training, and more. Some equine management factors that can contribute to ulcers include:

-Stall confinement
-Strenuous exercise
-Limiting feedings to two times per day
-Feeding diets high in grains
-Stress (both environmental and physical)
-No direct contact to other horses
-Training and recreational showing
-Hauling and mixing groups of horses

To help raise awareness about gastric ulcers in our horses, we are providing gastroscopy of the stomach at 50% off AND 2 FREE tubes of Ulcergard with each scoping (while supplies last)

** Ulcergard is not only an effective treatment for ulcers but can also be used preventatively when your horse is under added stress while traveling, changing barns/environments, etc.

To take advantage of this program, contact us by April 30th to book your horse's appointment.

What is quidding and why do horses do it?

Quidding is when our horses partially chew and ball up hay or other feed then drop it from their mouth. You might find these rolled up, cigar-shaped wads of feed in feed bowls/troughs or on the ground near where your horse eats. This is most often seen in horses that are having difficulty chewing and can be a sign of dental issues.
Some of the dental issues that may cause a horse to quid include:
- Loose teeth
- Teeth that no longer have an adequate grinding surface
- Gum disease
- Cavities or fractured teeth
- Sharp points and hooks that may be causing painful ulcers

If you are seeing signs of quidding or if your horse is due for their routine dental exam and float, this is a great time to book their half-price December Dental appointment. Call or email before December 31st and we will provide your horse’s dental exam and float at 50% off! This is a very popular program and appointment times fill up quickly so don’t wait… see flyer in the photos for additional information.

07/12/2023

Dental care is an important part of your horse's routine annual healthcare needs. One very common dental issue we see on nearly every dental patient is sharp points. These sharp points develop (see first photo) as your horse chews because the outside of the upper teeth and the inside of the lower teeth do not overlap so they don’t naturally wear down.

If our horses have sharp points it can make chewing uncomfortable (think of biting your cheek every time you chew - ouch!) and those points can make wearing a halter or working in the bridle uncomfortable as the halter and bridle press the cheek against those sharp points. As the sharp points grow they can begin to cause ulceration of the cheek and the tongue. (see second photo)

This seemingly small issue can translate into health and behavioral problems. Annual dental care can help you keep sharp points in check before they become a problem!

To help make regular dental care more affordable, our half-price December Dental program provides your horse’s oral exam and power float at 50% off when there are 2 or more horses at one appointment (including ranch calls) or one or more if you haul in to our clinic.

These appointments are already filling up very quickly and booking out into 2024, so call or email today for your appointment time!

It’s the one you’ve been waiting for...

For 15 years our equine medical group has been providing our half-price December Dental Program to help make it easier for horse owners to afford to maintain their horses' dental health!

Just like us, horses of all ages need regular dental care to keep them feeling their best. Younger horses need to be checked to make sure their teeth are coming in correctly, adult horses need to have regular floats to keep sharp points and other oral issues at bay, and aged horses often need help as their teeth begin to lose function or become loose.

This program provides your horse’s oral exam and power float at 50% off when you have 2 or more horses at one appointment (including ranch calls) or one or more if you haul in to our clinic.

These appointments fill up very quickly so call or email today for your appointment time!

September is Endocrine Awareness Month here at North Coast Vet and we want to share information on signs/symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment as we go through this month!
Our first topic this month is Cushings (also known as PPID) which can cause your horse to become more susceptible to illness, slow healing wounds, hoof abscesses and more. The other focus during endocrine month is Equine Metabolic Syndrome and specifically glucose and insulin levels which can cause some serious health issues in our horses if those get out of whack! A dysregulation of these can lead to several health issues including every horse owner’s nightmare - Laminitis or founder!

For the month of September we are providing endocrine testing at 50% off in hopes of catching as many horses as possible that may be in the early stages of these disease processes - before they become major health issues! (This is also a great time to have your horse’s annual testing done if they have already been diagnosed with one or both of these)
This is always a very popular program so give us a call or email us today to schedule your horse’s blood draw!

08/08/2023

August is Sand Colic Awareness Month here at North Coast Vet so throughout the month we will be discussing this important health topic.

Unfortunately, sand colic is very common especially in late summer and early fall. Sand colic isn’t just due to sand but really any ground matter our horses might ingest (sand, DG, dirt, etc). The ground matter builds up in their GI tract causing irritation, inflammation, and in some cases even blockages!
We will be discussing diagnosis, treatment, and most importantly PREVENTION this month so be sure to follow this page so you’ll see the information as we post it.

Since abdominal X-rays are the best and most accurate way to assess your horse’s sand load… during the month of August we are providing 2 lower abdominal X-rays for $155! See flyer in photos for details.

*****UPDATE*****

Regarding the current EHV situation in California in relation to Humboldt County:

We can confirm one positive case locally. The horse was seen on Thursday 3/10/22 and subsequently confirmed positive.

This case is being investigated, but so far there appears to be NO CONNECTION to the ongoing EHM/EHV-1 outbreaks elsewhere in CA. We believe this is an isolated incident.

This horse was tested for EHV-1 because it was recumbent with neurological signs, so testing was performed as a standard precaution.

At this time, it is believed that the horse’s recumbency (and subsequent euthanasia) was probably not caused by EHM.

However, since the horse was actively shedding EHV-1 and simultaneously experiencing neurological signs, CDFA is being cautious and recommending a 14 day isolation period for any in-contact horses, with daily temperature monitoring for the first 7 days.

We will ONLY perform further EHV-1 testing on potentially exposed horses that are (a) febrile, or (b) neurological. It is not recommended to test healthy asymptomatic horses because EHV-1 is widespread in equines, and intermittent shedding can occur with NO symptoms and NO adverse health consequences.

Please be patient with us as we work on answering your inquiries as quickly as possible.

Attached is CDFA’s basic EHV-1 Biosecurity Fact Sheet. For current guidance on what you should be doing now as horse owners, please otherwise refer to https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/ahfss/animal_health/equine_herpes_virus.html and check frequently for updates.

**IMPORTANT INFORMATION**

Equineherpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) has been detected in multiple horses in several counties in California. If not controlled, it can have significant consequences to the horse industry, infecting thousands of horses due to the extensive mixing of horses at statewide, national, and international horse events.
Equine herpesvirus causes respiratory disease, abortion, neonatal death, and the neurological disease known as EHM. It spreads in aerosolized secretions, by direct contact, and by contact with surfaces containing infected secretions. Shedding of the virus generally occurs for 7-10 days.
To reduce disease spread, the California State Veterinarian recommends that all hunter/jumper events (the most affected group) be postponed for the next 28 days, all equine events be postponed for the next 14 days, and all non-essential horse movements postponed for at least 14 days.
Horse owners must immediately isolate any horses exhibiting neurologic signs and consult their veterinarian; EHM has mandatory State reporting requirements. Owners must practice good biosecurity when they move horses in emergency situations or for veterinary care; avoid other horses and don’t share tack/equipment that hasn’t been properly cleaned and disinfected, including farrier and veterinary equipment.
For more information visit https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/ahfss/animal_health/ equine_herpes_virus.html.
This recommendation considers an event when horses from different home premises are brought together at a single location and include, but are not limited to: competitions of any discipline (in state or out of state), rodeos, educational riding clinics, and any travel of horses to an outside facility for lessons or casual/social gathering, etc. Sanctioned horse racing tracks are exempt from this recommendation.

If you have any questions or concerns about EHV / EHM we are always here to help you and your horses! You may reach us at 707-822-4885 , 707-726-9262 , or email us at [email protected]
