My rabbit herd is currently eating 3, 50lb bags of 18% pellets a week, at $23 a bag. That’s 600lbs a month at $276. 12 bags a month X 12 months in the year is 7,200lbs, at $3,312. It takes about one 50lb bag to raise a litter of 8 to weaning and another 50lb bag to raise the litter to butcher.
Last year I butchered 121 rabbits, average 3lbs each, packaged weight. 121 rabbits X 3lbs each= 363lbs of meat.
$3,312 in grain -/- 363lbs meat=$9.12 cost per pound of rabbit to raised.
This does not include cages, bedding, medications, my time daily feeding and watering, or the materials to package and butcher. Selling breeding stock also helps cover feed costs, along with foraging and feeding a less heavy pellet diet.
Last year I sold my rabbit meat for $10/lb, profiting little to nothing for my efforts. Not again.
This year, I want to teach others how to raise their own, while keeping my freezer full.

Excellent advise from Windfall Farms

Something to be aware of when taking photos for your records/evaluations or buying rabbits from photos. Angles matter ALOT.

This is the same 7 week old buck taken just seconds apart but they look like rather different animals. The top shot is taken at a downward angle, it is more impressive looking but the second shot taken level with the animal is much more accurate.

The color appears every 5 cycles, just like it does for every other element, because there are 5 colors used to differentiate the different year cycles: white, black, green, red, and brown. So of course the last time we had a black rabbit year it was 1963, that was 5 cycles ago.
