LEGACY RATTERY WILL BE CLOSING
I realize I haven't posted in a long time. Last year I decided to slow down breeding, and to give a lot of thought to whether I want to continue. I have been breeding rats since 2019 and I've made good progress on my goals of improving temperament and health. But after six years, I have decided to stop breeding, at least for now, and to eventually sell off my cages and equipment. I have one special litter, born in February, which is spoken for. Some babies are going to a couple of outstanding repeat adopters and others are going to a breeder friend. I will let my current 30 or so adult rats live out their lives with me. I will be offering cages and supplies for sale as they come available. I want to thank everybody that has supported the Rattery over the years. It has been a lot of fun. I will continue to keep some rats because they truly are wonderful, smart, engaging pets.

I am not quitting breeding! Just downsizing a little. I will also be setting up pairs of rats in mid- to late July. If pairings are successful, then babies will be expected in August-September and ready to go to homes at 8 weeks. I open a wait list once I have babies on the ground.

Spring/Summer 2024 RESET

No litters until Fall/Winter 2024 at the earliest.

I have not posted in a while as I have been reflecting on my breeding program, which has been ongoing since early 2019. I felt I lost some ground recently and needed to reassess. While I will continue breeding, I am scaling back for now, and only working with my rats having the best genetics. Most of my more recent babies have been lovely pets, but some turned out not to have the temperament I hope for and expect. I made some choices of parents I now regret and am focusing on my proven, best lines only. I will continue working with two trusted breeders, no others.

I do not expect to have any litters born until Fall/Winter 2024 at the earliest. I will not open any wait lists until there are litters on the ground. I prefer to adopt locally so I can provide support as needed, and repeat adopters will get preference.

Please be patient as I do this reset. The only reason I got into breeding rats was to improve temperament, health and longevity. My reputation as a breeder is based on providing sweet and healthy pet rats to loving owners.

I hope to have some sweet babies for those that want to adopt toward the end of the year (but going home at 8+ weeks so not available until 2025). Thank you all for your support over the years!

These are NOT availabilty photos and were taken at various ages. We have several lovely litters that will be available for reservation as soon as next week, that can go to homes starting Saturday March 2. We’ll be taking photos this weekend and contacting folks already on the wait list next week with individuals available for reservation. Please keep in mind:
-Our babies go to APPROVED pet homes only
-Same s*x pairs or more (rats need company)
-Placement is contingent on approved habitat/food/bedding/enrichments - we will alwaya answer questions
-Babies go home at 8+ weeks
-Approved adopters on the wait list get first choice
-Pickup in Mebane, NC

Single level Critter Nation on Chewy, great price for a great cage! Shipping is free. We strongly endorse this cage for rats. If you are in the market for a substantial cage, get a Critter Nation while they are on sale. They are modular, you can always add on later. No tools required, though a rubber mallet is helpful for assembly.

About Legacy Rattery

OUR RATTERY: Legacy Rattery is a small, home based rattery located in the Triad/Triangle region of central North Carolina. We specialize in beautiful, healthy rats with loving temperaments. We breed for the loving pet owner, not the show table, and definitely not for snake food. We carefully produce many types and colors, but especially rats with huge dumbo ears, beautiful colors and markings, and fluffy coats (like Rex and velveteen) or no coat at all (hairless). If you are looking for a sweet adult, ask about retired breeders and rescues. Some are playful, and will jump on your shoulder. Others will cuddle in your lap. Tell us what you are looking for and we will match you up with your perfect little buddies. (We require adopters keep two or more same s*x rats in a sufficiently spacious cage, as they are social and need rat companionship, even if they love you too). After you are matched with your new best friends from Legacy Rattery, we will provide continued education and support.

OUR ORIGIN: We are named Legacy Rattery in honor of our of our dear rat-wrangler friend Stephanie Cox, who owned and operated Twitchy Whiskers Rattery. Her loving, friendly rats were her greatest passion. Stephanie died tragically and unexpectedly in late January 2020, gone far to soon at the age of 30. Over the next few months, we worked through our shock and grief, cared for all her rats, and adopted many into loving homes. Stephanie’s mom, honoring her daughter’s passion, asked us to consider maintaining her lines and continuing her breeding projects. After giving it a lot of thought, we decided to give it a try, on a modest scale. We are continuing Stephanie’s work (hence the name Legacy) as well as breeding our own lines. We are small, and will stay small to ensure the best quality. We hope to build a community of followers that share our passion for sweet, healthy, carefully bred pet rats.

WHO WE ARE: All of us were friends with Stephanie and we all love rats. One of us, a geneticist, collaborated with her on breeding projects. Another, Stephanie’s best friend, kept rats, did some breeding, and helped her run the Twitchy Whiskers page. And a third adopted rats from her and became a fast friend who shared Stephanie’s passion for sweet and healthy pet rats. Together we make up Legacy Rattery.
