Puppies can be a lot!!! ⚡️

They have a lot of energy and can find it hard to switch off and chill. Especially around other people and dogs!

Settling, being able to listen and be calm is one of the things we focus on in my puppy classes.
If you have a puppy join me for 4 weeks of compassionate, sympathetic and understanding classes.

You will learn how to:
• 'speak' dog
• train
• prevent problem behaviours
• help them manage their emotions

Your dog will learn how to:
• settle calmly around other dogs and people
• focus on you with distractions
• walk on lead without pulling
• not jump on people
• recall
• sit, wait, leave it, go to bed
And more!

This is what Blueys mum said about the classes:

“Bluey (Collie) and I loved our weekly group puppy classes with Vanessa. Vanessa is such a friendly and supportive trainer. If you have a pup and want some tips on training and socialising, definitely get in touch with her.”

Sometimes sitting and focusing on my laptop at home is difficult. Too many distractions, too much never ending housework pulling my focus 🤣🗑️

So I packed Bear and I up and we headed to The Dugout Cafébar. Not pictured the amazing coffee and cake ☕️🍰! I got settled and suddenly I was in full work flow!

It's amazing what effect our environments can have on us. Podcasts or loud music for cleaning anyone??

It's so helpful to set your pets up for success by making their environment appropriate too! These are simple environmental tweaks to get you thinking:
🔹Want them to sleep - make it dark and quiet
🔹Chewing things they shouldn't - put them out of reach
🔹 Jumping on guests - use a baby gate

Using the environment to help is why the guardians I work with are sick of me saying "practice inside, low distractions!" Just like me working in a café, it's much easier for your dog to focus and learn without distractions, so this normally means starting training and rehearsing inside - even loose lead walking and recall!

If you want your dog to be able to chill whilst you have coffee - drop me a message 📧

Puppy classes started this week!

As always I was too busy to remember to take photos apart from this one! This pup was busy learning a ’touch’ cue until I disturbed her 🤣 isn’t she adorable 🥰

We covered loose lead walking, managing excitement levels, training basics, important stages of growing up and a touch cue! Everyone one did so well 👏👏 We also discussed nipping, which is this weeks homework theme 🎓

I’m taking bookings for September Tredegar classes now, drop me a message for more info 🐾

When training a cue or skill you need to think about the 3Ds!

The 3 Ds are:
• Distance
• Duration
• Distraction

I’ll use recall as an example! You want to be able to call your dog to you from far away - this is distance, after being off lead for any amount of time - this is duration and in a crowded exciting place - this is distraction.

Build up each of your Ds individually and when you increase 1 D, decrease the other 2.

Sticking with our recall example - rehearse inside first - very low distractions, then do some practice in your garden, slightly more distractions, then you might move to a quiet field or park. As you make the distraction levels harder and harder you would stay very close to your dog - lowering the distance level and for duration you’d keep how long they’ve been off lead the same. Then you’d go back to low distraction, keep the duration the same and start getting gradually further and further from your dog, here you’re working on distance. Now in a low distraction area and close to your dog (low distance) you’d practice recall varying the duration they’ve been off lead.

Distraction ✅
Distance ✅
Duration ✅

Then it’s time to start mixing them together! Work on 2 Ds together whilst keeping 1 D easy, for example, practice hard distances in increasingly distracting areas whilst keeping the duration the same.
This needs to be done for all combinations of D’s.

Distraction & distance ✅
Distance & duration ✅
Duration & distraction ✅

Finally - build up all 3 Ds at once until you can recall your dog from far away, in a super exciting place, just after you’ve let them off lead!

Distance, duration & distraction ✅

This is how you train really solid reliable cues 😁🏆

Send me a message or email [email protected] with any questions or if you need help with your dog.

Happy training!
Vanessa

Behaviour consultations can be tiring 🤣 This adorable pup who I met with today feel asleep towards the end 🥹🥰

Given that the session started with her barking lots and being fearful of me being in her home I think it’s safe to say it went well!

Honestly I find behaviour consultations tiring too! Why? Well they’re a lot of work! Everything said to me in a consultation opens up and closes different avenues of thought in my brain.
Example (not this case):
How old was she when you got her?
🧠 6 months - ok so socilisation and fear period happened before current owners, need to find out what previous home was like. A diet change might’ve occurred, I wonder what she was eating before. Did current owners meet mum and/or dad? Was she rehomed from where she was born or stay where she was born for that time. Etc etc etc 🤣
All with the aim of helping the dog and owner feel better and be able to live in harmony ❤️

I was called in because the pup can’t settle and becomes very distressed when mum has to go to work, even though work can just be in a different room.

We discussed a training plan to help with her separation anxiety, she’s also going to visit the vets to make sure there’s nothing medically untoward going on, I’m off to look into the food she’s eating, look into appropriate tech to monitor progress, contact the vet and write my behaviour report and training plan ☺️

I’m excited to follow up with the sleepy pup in a few weeks 🥰

Get in touch if you’re struggling with your pets behaviour

TIP: Cardboard packaging can make a great free enrichment toy! Empty the box, put the cardboard paper stuff back in, sprinkle some kibble or hard treats in, give it a shake and let them have fun!

Be careful with dogs who eat cardboard

Self care Sunday 🥾

Painting the house on Saturday, a broken boiler then having my MOT and the dentist booked in on Monday required something nice on Sunday 🤣

It’s important to fill your cup, the same is true for our pets! Little challenge for this week - find time to do something that fills your pets cup. Could be a bonus snuffle, play time, skipping a walk, etc etc.

Let me know what you aim to do in the comments 👇 I’ll get started with Bear and my fish 🐶🐟

After getting married, going on a mini moon and dealing with a broken boiler (cold showers anyone? 🥶) it’s suddenly July! I’ve now thawed out with a warm bath and I’m back fully into the swing of things! It feels good 😁🤣

So here’s what’s going on in July! I have puppy classes and life skills classes starting and a few spaces for dog, cat or rabbit 1:1 behaviour consultations and training sessions.

If you want to sign up for one of my classes or you’ve been struggling with your pets behaviour get in touch for a free chat👇

Do you see people out in pubs, cafés and restaurants with calm dogs? Training a settle is the first step to getting that behaviour!

These pups are working on their settle in class♥️

Tip: use a blanket, towel or thin mat. This way you can easily have a few, take them with you and lay them over their already existing beds and comfy layers.

This is such a useful skill - if you need any help training it drop me a message 🥰

My work pal 💻

Sometimes I need to pop to a cafe for coffee and to help me focus on laptop work ☕️ 👀 it’s nice to bring Bear with me too 🥰 he likes to people watch and snooze whilst I get through my to-do list.

Working on our public settle and the ability to chill around other people and dogs are the skills that enable us to do this together!

Any questions about this just ask 😊

I feel like I need to explain myself..

I do A LOT of liking posts so if you’ve seen me liking a lot of yours - here’s why!

If you’re a small business, artist or person trying to make it on these apps - I’ll like every post, story and reel I see of yours.
It’s one small way I can support you whilst I’m doing my own social media admin or casual scrolling. Hopefully the algorithms will notice you too… 👀

It can be hard out here 🤣

Also - I don’t recommend making your own wedding favours 🤣 photo is of Bear helping me plant up 29 propagated plants into 3d printed pots as it’s getting dark a few days before the wedding. Meanwhile hubby was inside bottling up cider he made 😅😅

What is this and how does it help a cat!?

Other than a bad doodle 🤣 it’s a vital part of a cat consultation!

It’s a map of where a cat has toileted in the house. This cat client started marking a lot in the house after a few fights with an outside cat. Cats are very smell oriented and use p*e and poo to communicate with themselves and other cats.

Where a cat marks can seem completely random until you put your detective hat on and start mapping! 🕵️‍♀️🗺️

When you start piecing it together you can see that this cat always marks by a door or window - where the outside world collides with his core territory. He’s marking most by the front door where his guardians and himself go in and out, this brings in a lot of smells from outside. He’s letting himself know that he’s at the edge of his core territory and resources in his core territory have felt threatened.

I love deciphering why cats aren’t using their litter box 🤣🕵️‍♀️🐱

If you have a cat that won’t use their litter box send me a message or comment below and I’ll be in touch👇 It’s such a stressful problem and you have my sympathy. I have remote and in person spaces remaining this month.

How I prepared Bear for my wedding!

Firstly, buy him a lovely outfit 🤣 harness and lead in lilac - felt like a wedding colour and also the perfect combo between bridesmaids (green) and groomsmen and groomswomen (navy) 🤷‍♀️

Harness by and lead by .pawchella
Close up photos soon!

Second is to manage our expectations!
Bear is an old dude who’s happy with his chill life. I know he wouldn’t enjoy a huge crowd and I don’t want the responsibility of training him to have anything expensive tied to him, anywhere to be at a particular time or anything to do that carries huge importance 🤣 The most important thing is he’s happy so we planned a lil meet up with very few people to get some pics and he was perfectly happy ♥️ If Bear wasn’t up for coming that day, then he didn’t have to. All plans were dependent on him being ok.

Thirdly we sorted out a fantastic pet sitter to have him .
Fantastic pet sitter is there to keep an eye on him and his welfare - to make sure he’s happy and chill at home so we can relax knowing he’s in great hands, and to bring him to our wedding. If Bear wasn’t up for coming or was getting at all stressed Pip was there to take him away - no pressure. Having someone knowledge who also had his welfare as the highest priority provided huge peace of mind.

Fourthly I rehearsed some basic useful behaviours with him. We worked on sit and not jumping specifically to help with greeting him on a white dress and posing for photos!

Behind the scenes shot of and working away - so excited to see what they captured!

Shout out to the amazing for everything - specifically in this case sorting my veil 🤣

Also I had the most perfect day ♥️

As always I forgot to take photos in the class to show you the very cute puppies and what we’ve been up to! 🤣
