Remembering Koda.....
Koda sometimes visited us for daycare. It didn't matter that he had been here the previous day, he always spent the first hour and a half curled up under a desk in the front office away from everyone else. Usually, it was about 10:30 am when he would come out and go into the backyard. We had an open door policy to the back yard. It was clockwork that he would snap out of his funk and become one of the most playful and interactive guests.

One day an article in the newspaper appeared about a dog that had been swimming in the lake in the park downtown had mysteriously passed away within an hour of his having been in the water and succumbing to a total breakdown of his nervous system. The vets were mystified. It turns out that this was Koda.

It was later determined that this was caused by blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) in the lake and that Koda simply licking himself after getting out of the water was enough to cause his death.

Since that day, reports have become commonplace across the nation. I did a 7000 mile road trip from Austin to Lake Champlain in New York and then on to the Willamette Valley in Oregon over the course of October to March. The algae plumes swirled around the boat docks on Lake Champlain and along the Willamette River banks in Oregon. It's everywhere and don't be fooled into think that it only appears in warm weather. These were northern places I was visiting from October to March.

Austin has come up with a program to spray the banks of the waterways with a clay that strangles the nutrients that the algae thrives on. Oregon State University researchers have come up with a way to detect the algae by measuring a distinct gas that the algae gives off. This is all a start but only a start. Don't be fooled by thinking the waters are safe. Snowmelt and spring fed streams and rivers are probably safe but please be cautious anywhere else when around inland water. This algae is deadly and acts fast. Be careful out there.

We love you always Koda.

Young Again:
It's pure joy to see a senior get out and about and have fun.
Included in these are the Virginia hound from Virginia who you would typically find lounging on a pillow on the bed all day. On occasion she would rally early in the morning like in these images. Also we have Duke, the little black dog who was adopted by a loving parent as a senior. He was a bit fragile and tended to remain in his dog bed a lot but once in awhile he would rally.
Blue the Great Dane was 15 years old when visiting. We looked up the oldest known Great Dane in Guinness Book of Records and that one was said to be 14 years old.
Travis the Boxer usually had very long stays with us. He didn't really bark, he sort of howled. He played with people but seldom with dogs but here we catch him playing with others.

This page is dedicated to Montana, a best friend always and never to be forgotten by me.
She was born in Montana and in her later years passed Canine Good Citizen registration with flying colors. She required little training. She was a natural. Montana's image is always up on one of my screens. She is always with me.

After Montana, we began doing dog boarding and daycare in our home thanks to a suggestion by a dear friend. It quickly turned high volume due to our neighborhood and it's location. Any where from 4 to 24 dogs per day based on seasonality and such. I began photographing them. Over the course of 5 years, I probably averaged 30 shots a day, 7 days a week. I don't know exactly how many I took but you can do the math and get a good idea. Maybe 10,000 per year? Of course not all are worth saving and some were tossed. I have no idea how many I saved either. It's certainly thousands up there in the cloud.

OK, so I have thousands of dog photos. Now what?

There is a South Park episode about underwear gnomes. You can find it on You-Tube or at least the portion of it that concerns me. ..the underwear gnome business plan.

The gnomes sneak into people's bedrooms at night and steal underwear from drawers. One night, the South Park kids hide behind a bed and observe the gnomes at work. They then follow them to a cave where the gnomes have a giant pile of underwear. Also in the cave is a chart of the business plan of the gnomes. The plan is broken down into 3 phases.
Phase 1: Collect underwear.
Phase 2: ? (just a question mark).
Phase 3: Make money.

So with all of my photos, I must be a dog gnome.

For the purpose of this page, I've extracted hundreds of images and sorted them into various themes based on what I consider to be typical moments dogs have and will attempt to display them here if the Facebook engine will allow.

I am only scratching the surface here. There are many more that I haven't even gone into.

I am no longer involved in private boarding and daycare. Rather I intend to dedicate my time to Positive Reinforcement Training of shelter dogs in Austin, Tx.,. All shelter dogs have had a raw deal but my strongest interest is in the ones that always get passed by for adoption.
