Blair Hope and Heart Centered Healing & Animal Communication are who I call when I’m training a complicated dog. This is why.
Is your dog well behaved in public?
It’s so important to teach your dog to have good manners, and that extends far beyond your home. When you bring your dog out to dog-friendly places around town, be sure they are calm and well behaved.
*sound ON to hear the chirping* I hear people recommend #appleairtag all the time for dogs, even though Apple doesn’t recommend it. Beware- if your AirTag is separated from your phone for an extended period of time (about 3 days), your AirTag will make a chirping sound when it moves after being still for awhile. This may help people locate a tag that has been lost, but it’s not a good plan for your dog if they are not with you.
I’ve seen dogs become very unsettled when their collar starts chirping when they get up from a nap. I don’t let training dogs keep them on at my house when they are away from their owners. And most owners are unaware this happens!

A shout out to @dogisgood for donating a very special gift for an incredibly brave kid who is facing his fear of dogs head on. Logan has made such incredible progress that “Abby” wanted to give him a gift. @thegilakurtz was generous enough to donate a shirt for Logan that says “Never Walk Alone”. Since Logan has actually walked Abby recently, this was the perfect gift for him.
People in Logan’s life have noticed the changes in him when he’s around dogs. I am honored to be a part of his journey. And Abby always looks forward to his visits!

Training your dog is an opportunity to bond with your dog. Training your dog with other people who are also training their dog is an opportunity to bond with other people.
Training your dog to walk next to you on a loose leash while also paying attention to the people around you so you all stay in a straight line… what opportunity does that present to you?

Spend time teaching your dog how to stay connected with you while on leash. We always hear people complain about their dogs pulling, reacting, or sniffing excessively.
Do you want your dog to stop doing so many things wrong while you’re walking? Work on teaching your dog what to do correctly instead of focusing on what they are doing wrong. You can literally teach your dog to always know where you are when on leash.

Leadership comes naturally for some people and their relationship with their dog thrives. But what can you do if you don’t have that presence?
Talk less. Make the words you choose be meaningful. If you say it, mean it.
Pet less. Use petting as reinforcement for good behavior. Have it be more about what your dog needs than what you want.
Pay attention to space. Who goes first? Who sits where? Does your dog need permission to sit on your lap or on the couch?
Treat less. When in doubt, use less food. We have the tendency to reinforce our dogs too close in time to when they are acting inappropriately. A good rule of thumb is to treat your dog only after they have been behaving for at least 1 minute.
Use your leash. Even inside. You can set your dog up for success by helping to manage where they go.
If your dog listens to you, doesn’t resist what you ask, and isn’t pushy or rude, this may not apply to you. But if your dog doesn’t listen to you or you feel like your training plan isn’t working like you thought it would, this is a good place to start.

Calm dogs are easier to live with, to travel with, and to go shopping with! Maggie needed to learn to be comfortable in this bag so she can ride the subway. Now she’ll be included in more activities with her family!!
The fact that she always sticks her tongue out is just an added cuteness factor! ❤️

It’s always fun to expose dogs to new experiences! We aim to gently lead your dog to just past their comfort zone, but not too far. We want them to build their confidence, not get too scared.
These sheep are comfortable around dogs so it was such a good opportunity to just hang out and let the dogs acclimate. Once comfortable, some were more curious than others!!
Do you seek out novel experiences for your dog? Share what creative encounters you have had!

A lot goes into petting your dog. Do you pay attention to that?
So many people reach down to pet their dogs all the time, and, depending on your dog, sometimes it’s too much petting! Watch your dog’s body language carefully and you will be able to tell if it’s too much.
Also pay attention to how your dog reacts to different kinds of petting. Does your dog like a dog massage like Zoey does in this video? Or does your dog prefer to be scratched under their chin? Their belly? Where is your dog’s favorite spot?

When something seems too hard, do you just give up?
(Btw, this applies to you as much as your dog!)
You can teach your dog to keep trying even if they can’t figure something out right away. You can teach a dog to have a positive attitude when confronted with a challenge. You can teach a dog to be adaptable and welcome change.
It’s a different kind of dog training than teaching obedience. Just be on the lookout for your dog to impress you with their effort or their curiosity and be sure to reinforce them for that!

Tell me that you love your dog without telling me you love your dog!

You can teach your dog to be calm coming out of their crate. This exercise teaches impulse control, and waiting for them to look at you before you release them increases the connection you have. Putting a leash on them before they come out helps them to remind them to come out calmly. Take it slow. And be consistent.
It’s so cute when your dog watches TV, right? You might laugh, giggle, and encourage this behavior.
Is it still cute when your dog barks so loudly at the TV you can no longer watch it?
What if you have a large dog jumping towards the TV with a predictably dangerous ending (for your dog and your tv). I think we’d all agree that’s not cute.
Be aware of the predictable path your dog is on and do your best to not accidentally reinforce behavior you don’t want in the long run. That’s not really fair to your dog.
Oliver has learned to not bark at the TV. You can still see it’s challenging for him and what a good choice he makes to walk away! Go Oliver!!

Teach your dog to be calm and you can teach them to be calm with distractions- even when the distraction is another dog and your dog reacts to dogs.
Being taught how to be calm without distractions is the first step.
