life with Livestock guardians is never boring. we love to share the adventures of dogs.

Another weekend with no shows so we had a weekend BBQ for Ants birthday. Lots of lovely friends came with their dogs including our wonderful Kayarrach family so we were able to get some updated family photos. We also went on a nice woodland walk.
04/08/2024
So a weekend without dog show, that doesn't mean a lazy weekend at Estjak. We like to help the dogs keep themselves cool by keeping on top of their coats so today Via, Alva and Fire all had a bath and blast out. Fire wasn't happy with my bath so gave herself a 2nd bath in the garden...well at least her coat is looking good lol.

So proud of Alvas achievements.
She is also swapping with Rainha for top dog at such a young age she is doing phenomenally.
Thank you to all the stakes judges, breed judges and AVNSC judges who have thought so highly of her and have been able to see her breed qualities.
Thank you to Tara (Sannah) for training and handling.
Thank you to Julie (Rosilbern) for driving to shows handling and supporting.
Thank you to Mark (Austmans) for the awesome bait and handling.
Thank you to Sarah (Qimutka) for stepping in and handling.
Huge thanks to all Alvas support you guys are so Amazing and we love seeing you all.

On Sunday we travelled with the lovely Julie of Rosilbern Kennel to Leeds Champ Show. Thank you Julie for the driving and the company.
Alva won her Junior class shown by Sarah Atkins- Thank you Sarah.
She went no further but had lovely comments from the judge Derek Smith. Thank you to our judge.
We had a great day Megan had a play with Alva so she had lots of fun, it's not all about winning it's all about the people you are surrounded with.
29/06/2024
We've had a tornjak day today. We attended a local fun show and took the oldest and the youngest.
Under pur judge Lorna Graham, Via was best puppy in the pedigree classes and Jaz at a few months why of her 12th birthday was 4th in the Golden oldies.
28/06/2024
Estjak had a fabulous day at Windsor Championship Show. Its not one we regularly attend but we like to support judges who we know will be fair and have a genuine interest in our breed.
Only Kayarrach Wish Upon a Star was entered but as always she put on a great show and didn't disapoint.
Alva was 1st in the Agria Junior Stakes under Mr S Parsons winning herself £30. Thanks to Mark for handling beautifully Nd providing the best bait.
Alva was then piloted by our good friend Julie Ann Wright in her breed class where under Sue Bird, she won her junior class, best Bitch and Utimately Best Of Breed.
NOTHING FURTHER IN THE GROUP but as always Alva didn't put foot wrong and was proud to represent her breed, the judge and of course her fabulous breeders Kayarrach Estrela Mountain Dogs who we work closely with.
25/06/2024
I thought we would share something fun for a change. Life isn't all about dog shows.
22/06/2024
Thrilled with this mornings post the girls champion certificates have arrived and they are beautiful...
Congratulations Kayarrach on your first Croatian Jnr Champion.
Congratulations Canil Cabeço de Seixo on another champion from your kennel
25/05/2024
Well yesterday was Bath Champ Show, we love Bath but its soooo far away.
However our Star Alva didn't disapoint as always she put on a show everytime she stepped in the ring, she was in fantastic company in the Junior Stakes class where we were thrilled with her 5th place.. congratulations to all the other winners.
In the breed again Alva didn't put a paw wrong winning her class, BB and ultimately BOB. Congratulations to Gill on Lulas reserve and thank you to Toni Jackson for thinking our girl worthy of top honours.
Ebony also made an appearance because shes looking rather fabulous at the moment.
Ebony had a great time and represented herself and the breed as well as possible, unfortunately the judge preferred a much older dog on this occassion but are very proud of how well Ebony behaved.
Thank you must go to Julie for allowing us to stay in her van, Tara for handling and Mark and Kimberly for cakes and ringside support... you guys all make showing the fun it should be.
Thanks to Anthony for staying home to do the dogs so we could leave Thursday to break-up the driving.
Good luck Julie and Tara, enjoy Ireland.

Unfortunately Crufts is a distant memory already. Today we went to Newark for Retford Canine Society Premier Open Show.
First up the little black dog affectionately known as Ebony brought out to support James. Ebony enjoyed her day out and was awarded Reserve Best of Breed after showing her little socks off.
Ebony also went into adult handling with Tara who won her class.
Then it was our little star Alva who as always performed everytime she was asked too. No estrela classes so she was AVNSC, her first time in a junior class. She won that so was in the challenge and much to our surprise she was awarded best AVNSC so off she went into the group.
Alva went into AV Junior under Tim Ball and placed 4th with the mix of breeds in tbe class this was a great result.
Our Pastoral Group judge was Karen Edwards (same judge as the AVNSC classes) we were pleased as punch Alva made the shortlist with the lovely Pyrenean JJ. WOW much to our absolute delight little miss Alva at just 12 months old WON THE PASTORAL GROUP.
Nothing in best in Show but we really couldn't ask more of our amazing show girl.
Thank you Tara for showing her to her best and thank you to the fantastic people who support us and stayed with us to the end... we really appreciate you all...pinch me please so can't believe what happened today.

With Crufts over i thought we would share how the dogs prepare for Crufts.
10/03/2024
So after her stint on Discover dogs Alva returned to Crufts on Saturday for her last ever puppy class.
Amazingly she won her class so was best puppy B***h
She finished her puppy career as best puppy in breed we are so proud of her and how much she enjoys showing. Well done Alva and Tara.
Fire came along and redeemed herself after last year with a third place.
07/03/2024
Alva has had a great day on Discover Dogs today. She made sure sister Moana was happy. She said hello to as many children as she could and she even had her photo taken with a Leonberger to show they don't look the same. Now she can rest before returning on Saturday.
04/03/2024
Arrgggh its Crufts week. We will be on Discover dogs on Thursday am, feel free to come and say hello. Then we are showing Saturday.
Thank you to Rosie for this lovely advert

Last weekend before Crufts can mean only 1 thing... pre crufts practise at WATH.
No classes for Estrelas so AVNSC again.
Little Miss Alva - Kayarrach Wish Upon a Star - 2nd in her puppy class. Unfortunately the judge unnerved her so she wasn't her usually happy self.
She then went into a big puppy stakes class where she took a respectable 2nd place bagging herself £10 prize money. As a puppy Alva has won herself £23 in stakes classes, for an estrela thats amazing. Her grandma only ever won 50p (yes we still have that in its envelope)
Our fire cracker Miss Fire - Safira Do Cabeco do Seixo - wasn't happy with the judge at all so although she moved well she wasn't happy to be gone over. Re crufts practise didn't go well for her.... 😒
18/02/2024
All pre crufts practise so Miss Alva ventured to Newark and District Open show yesterday. No breed classes so we were AVNSC, there weren't breed classes for many breeds meaning the AVNSC entries were 42 dogs. I think 15 were puppies but there were some absentees so there was 10 in the class. Little Miss Alva as always put on a show. Unfortunately we did have to miss AV rare breeds but we were happy to do so when we got the 2nd place in AVNSC against quite a variety of breeds.
Nothing in puppy stakes this time but again Alva did everything she needed, i suspect the judge didn't actually know what she was as is often the case.
Once judging was over we went to pack up and caught up with our AVNSC judge Angela Peddar who was very complimentary about Alva and how breed typical she is and how well she moves.
Thank you to Angela Peddar for thinking so highly of our little Star and thank you as always to Tara for campaigning her so well.
Photos aren't great as lighting at Newark is poor but i'll share a few anyway.
10/02/2024
As we have no shows this weekend Alva went out socialising to her usual garden centre then a new garden centre. She took her friend Neo with her who enjoyed it too. They said hello to lots of people, guinea pigs and a rabbit.
30/01/2024
Sometimes the postman brings the best post...
Estjaks first International Champion we couldn't be prouder.
Not being a CC breed in the UK means we can't make an estrela a champion without multiple trips abroad. Saffire has been to France, Spain, Romania and Ireland she in a Spanish champion, Latin winner x 2, RSCE winner, a Romanian Champion and a Romanian Grand Champion. Now she is officially an International Champion
Thank you to Tara and Akna Canadian Eskimo/Inuit Dog & Czechoslovakian Wolfdog Team for helping us achieve this with her.
21/01/2024
On Friday Tara and Alva went alone to Manchester Champ show. This is the first champ show of the year and the last show to qualify for Crufts so always a busy show.
Alva was awarded best rare breed puppy and reserve best bitch, best estrela puppy and best of breed. Not content with that she was then shortlisted in a very nice adult group. However Alva wasn't finished she still had the puppy group where she placed 4th. We are absolutely beside ourselves with pride.
We have been pleased with all the group placings Alva has received but to get them at Championship shows really isn't known. Over more recent years there have been estrelas getting placings in adult groups but again this isn't common. I have looked through any records i can find and the only other puppy group placing i came across was in 2005 Clerafora Pacos awarded a puppy group 2.
Alva clearly is our star 🌟 she suits her name Kayarrach Wish Upon a Star. She is such a character to live with its so nice to have judges also recognise how special she is.
Thank you to all Alvas cheerleaders we really do appreciate your support and are so happy to have you with us on Alvas journey.
Of course Special thanks to Tara for campaigning her.

Not many shows left before Crufts now. Yesterday Fire and Alva attended Coalville Open Show. No breed classes so we were AVNSC.
Alva won her puppy class
Fire won her Open Class
Fire and Alva were both in the challenge where our lovely judge Paul Conway awarded Alva not only Best Puppy in Breed but also Best of Breed with Fire reserve.
We were thrilled both girls did so well and really hadn't anticipated the result with both in AVNSC.
Alva then went into both Adult and puppy group, at 10 months she got nothing in the adult group but to our surprise she won the puppy group, what a little 🌟
We waited for Best Puppy in Show, nothing in there but she didn't put a foot wrong. Our little Kayarrach Wish Upon a Star is so true to her name, she just keeps going. So happy to be at a show and saying hello to everyone.
Thank you to Coalville for putting on a fab show and of course Paul for thinking so highly of the girls.
Thank to Kiera for stepping in to handle Alva in the challenge and thank you to everyone else for your company and support.
It was a lovely day, well run show and what a friendly atmosphere.

Wow Peter Simmons for wonderful Critique of our little Star Alva. She has had some very nice critques of late but i couldn't resist not sharing this one.
08/01/2024
Its not all about showing at Estjak most days are about having fun. Alva enjoys a romp with her brother from another mother lol.
31/12/2023
We just love this ad drawn up by Julie to show how well little Alva had done in 3 months.
30/12/2023
As we are on holiday we decided to pop over to Ireland for a dog show. Ebony and Alva entered both girls behaved both got their grading, greenstar and Best of breed.
Many thanks to the judges for their awards, Julie for taking us and Tara for handling. We had a fun 2 days.

Both girls made us proud tonight, we don't have young children so the dogs only see children when we are out and about. Tonight Tara brought her niece 6yr old India who is dog mad. India wanted to handle the dogs so she practised with both girls. I think they all did great.
Its not all about shows here
Some ringcraft videos as we have more of them than photos.
As i can't post photos and videos on the same post here's Redd at weightpull.
Of course being in Sweden meant Ebony got to play at sledging. She did approx 7km and was so good.
Our little Ebony is 1 today. Shes done so well in her first year in The UK so she received a new light up squeaky ball that clearly both Ebony and Redd have had fun with today.
We tried something different this weekend.... took the Canadians out running. A new experience for us ans them. They did brilliantly very proud of them both.
We didn't have snow we had hard frost and freezing fog so the dogs had great fun on the field. We enjoyed making Ebony a little festive reindeer.
Last championship show of 2022 for us, we didn't enter LKA but went along to support the estrelas. Sulley (Estjak Riodouro) was there with Rosie. He is a great boy but not always comfortable showing yesterday when he needed too Sulley did what was needed.. he won his class and went on to take best dog making us very proud then to top it off he won Besr of Breed... thank you Cath Moffat for thinking so highly of him. We are very proud of him and Rosie and very greatful to Steph for handling him. They are a great team. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=5443739625754973&id=100003569688715&sfnsn=scwspmo
They clearly don't know their ages.
Well today Redd went to try something new.... he had a go at weightpull. He's never wore a harness before never tried anything like this before but we think he enjoyed it. As facebook won't let me upload multiples I'll put photos and videos in an album.
Ebony is loving being back on the field with her bestie Neo

Our Story
Our journey started about 11 years ago. We went to Crufts to find out about the breeds we were interested in and meet the breeders and the dogs. Discover dogs is such a great place to learn about dogs and meet them and people who live with them.
We went with the intention of learning about 3 breeds, samoyed, chow chow and Leonberger. We met all three breeds and spoke to the people who live with them then as we continued wondering round we came across a breed that initially looked similar to the leonberger but smaller so we stopped and spoke to the people on the stand. This breed was the Estrela Mountain dog, we learned they were classed as a rare breed and were live stock guardians. Although initially they looked like Leo’s to us pet people we were soon educated about the differences because the Estrela was not a designed breed they came from the mountains and were therefore not messed with but also not common so finding puppies wasn’t easy. We weren’t in a rush so this wasn’t a problem. From then we spent the next 3 years visiting Discover Dogs at Crufts to learn more about the breed and what they are like to live with.
When we were in a position to get a puppy we made contact with a few breeders to see who had puppies. The breeder who had suitable pups was Gill Reid of Milagre. We had hoped for a male but she only had females left so we spent some time with Gill and her dogs. We agreed if she was happy we would be honoured to have her last available female come and live with us. Gill explained she had started vaccinations so wasn’t happy to let the puppy Willow leave until she had finished the course. This wasn’t a problem and we respected she was doing her best for the pup so we paid our deposit and agreed to return in a few weeks to collect her.
We collected our puppy Milagre Gotta Feelin, pet name Willow 2 weeks after meeting her. She was a bundle of fluff and settled in well. Part of the agreement with her breeder was that Willow needed to be shown to prove she was a good Estrela, we weren’t really interested in showing but said we would give it a go. We signed up to some ring craft classes to learn what we needed to do and we entered her into some shows her breeder was going to be at so that we had someone we knew who could advise us what we needed to do.
Within a few weeks of Willow joining us there was a post on the breeders page, an advert for Tornjak’s. We had never heard of the breed so we googled them. What we read about them told us they do the same job as Estrela’s but in Croatia not Portugal. The difference other than their look is that Estrelas have selective hearing but apparently with a Tornjak once taught something they don’t forget so this raised our interest. We made contact with the breeder Borna Saceric of Zlatna Sapa Kennels but he was in Croatia. We looked and were unable to find breeders in the UK so we had to look into importing a puppy. This wasn’t as straight forward as we assumed and was also quite expensive so we decided maybe as responsible owners we should drive to Croatia and collect the pup, this would give us the opportunity to meet the breeder and maybe the pups parents. We agreed with the breeder which pup we would have and we paid a deposit. We had regular contact with the breeder and asked him to ensure the puppy was socialised so she would be confident when we came home with us. We then decided if we were going to the effort to drive to Croatia to collect a pup it was more cost effective to get 2 pups so we negotiated a 2nd pup from the same breeders. We thought it’s no more work really and the pups would keep each other company on the journey, but being younger than Willow they could look upto her and learn from her when we got them home.
We booked a couple of days off work and left home at midnight on the Thursday for the long drive to Croatia. We arrived in Croatia by 10:30 on the Saturday. We met Borna who introduced us to the pups. We met their mother and then we were taken on a trip to the capital Karlovac to learn about the history, we were taken to meet some other tornjaks so that we could see what the pups would grow up like. We left Croatia at 2pm to head back to the UK. Unfortunately neither pup travelled well so we had to make lots of stops to clean them up. We drove through the night and arrived home by Sunday afternoon. We introduced the pups to Willow and this was the start of our journey with Estrelas and Tornjaks.
