Apart from pigeons, we also specialise in corvids. Here are some of our recent crow rescues, including Bramble rescued yesterday in Crystal Palace (as reflected in the name, catching him was a bit... unpleasant 😀)

Wildlife in Lincolnshire and District - WILD things rescue

Did you know?!

Pigeons and doves breed all year round!

We normally call March-July 'baby bird season' but in fact we see baby birds all year round!

Wood pigeons build notoriously terrible nests so they are often our most common casualty as they fall out of nests. We also see a large number of baby birds brought in by cats.

If your cat brings in an animal it needs veterinary attention as soon as possible. Cats mouths carry lots of bacteria which can cause fatal sepsis in animals injured by them.

If your cat brings in a baby bird or mammal, keep them nice and warm in a box with a hot water bottle covered in a towel until you can get them to a vet. Don't be tempted to syringe anything into their mouth as this can cause them to drown.

Male siskin in the garden. The Siskin has become much more familiar as a garden bird over the last 40 years or so, as it’s extended its UK breeding range and taken readily to the increase in popularity of feeding wild birds in our gardens. The male Siskin is a striking little finch, with its yellow-green streaked body, black crown and bib, and yellow patches on its wings and tail which are obvious when the bird is viewed in flight. The female bird is drabber in colour and lacks the black crown and bib, but shares a similar overall plumage pattern to the male, and both sexes have a distinct forked tail. In the garden their favourite foods are niger seed, sunflower hearts and peanuts in a mesh feeder.

This pure white male blackbird is nesting in a garden near Garstang, .
What an amazing looking bird. We'll be hoping to hear what colour the chicks are when they fledge! Thanks to Peter Howard for sharing it with us.

Do you have any unusual plumaged birds visiting your garden?

Although starling’s behaviour is breathtaking to witness, their appearance is somewhat less charismatic. The scruffy looking birds are chunky and about the size of a Thrush; with pink legs, short tails and long slender beaks.

At a distance they look black but in winter they are brown, heavily covered in white speckles. This spotting wears away as the feathers become worn towards spring. The female starling looks less glossy and oily than its male counterpart but a key difference to tell the sexes apart is by the colour of their bills; blue for the males and pink for the females.

Juveniles look completely different with a brown plumage, and the normal lifespan of a starling is around 15 years.

Barby Keel Animal Sanctuary (Registered Charity No. 1095382)

A fabulous February day. Three of our residents enjoying the sun. Meet Peter our beautiful peacock strutting his stuff, one of our resident kitties chilling on a wheel bin and one of our lovely free range chooks enjoying the sun having been freed from a battery farm where she never saw the light of day. This really is animal heaven.

A HUGE thank you from all the animals and their human slaves for all your support.
