Whenever we go out of the house, we’re always hoping we don’t see a stray in a bad predicament, because that’s always a heavy day ahead.
Yesterday was a heavy day— we met Chocnut lying on his side, an adult cat covered in sludge on the side of the street, lying on top of garbage. We suspect that he got stuck in the sewers during the rains, and we were preparing to move him to a better resting place, but he surprised us by meowing softly.
Chocnut was still very much alive, and fighting!
We did our best to clean him up, and found that he had trouble staying upright, but Chocnut managed to eat while lying on his side, hungry and looking very exhausted.
At Animal House, Doc Dianne ran through some tests and ruled out fractures and major viral infections, and we confined Chocnut for observation with a prescription of antibiotics to improve his blood test results that showed worrying highs and lows.
We cheered him on as his fluids improved with the IV drip and left feeling optimistic, making hopeful plans to foster him once his condition improved.
However, at around 11:00PM, we received a call from the nurse station—Chocnut went into cardiac arrest, and attempts to revive him were not enough to save our new friend.
Our bill tallied up to P16,500 for the night, and donations to help us offset the costs would be very much appreciated via our gcash and bpi accounts.
We met a very handsome, life-changing stray in Chocnut yesterday morning. We hope that it was a soft and comfortable fade out for him, well-deserved after what we imagine was a harrowing experience in the rains last week.
Hug your loved ones for us tonight, and keep Chocnut and your neighborhood strays in your thoughts whenever the weather gets a bit rough.
