I have a room in my home dedicated to zen, yoga and meditation. At any time, one of my four pets is with me if I'm on my mat.

Gia is blind and is adjusting to recently losing her vision. Sometimes she loses her way but if I say "Gi, come do yoga with me", she knows exactly where to go. She took the entire front of my yoga mat this morning, so I did yoga halfway on the mat and halfway on the floor. She's lucky she's cute! 😉

Sweet Bailey. Her family was one of my very first clients so I've been visiting her for a long time. Christmas time was my first set of visits with just Bailey. No Ruthie. Ruthie, the 98-lb Rhodesian Ridgeback passed away earlier this year. 😢

It's been very interesting to see how Bailey acts with Ruthie being gone. I wasn't sure what to expect, maybe sadness, loneliness? I think Bailey actually took a back seat to Ruthie.

I think what I'm seeing now with the super happy, playful Bailey is the true Bailey. I'm glad she's shining now in her own beam!

We had a lot of fun and I get to see her again very soon!

Maia and Scruffy on Christmas morning. What a great way to start my busiest day of the year!

Their owners left me two amazingly delicious cardamom rolls from The Reverie to enjoy for Christmas breakfast so that was a nice surprise. I enjoyed a roll while the pups ate their breakfast.

This sweet girl is Barni. She's a senior cat who loves to have her name called as soon as I walk in the door to visit her. I have to act like I have NO idea where she's hiding and then go searching for her. 👀

She'll hide and then immediately come out for cuddles as soon as she hears me getting close to her. She knows I always have treats for her so I'm sure that helps lure her out!

Roxy wins the most visits booked at one time for 2024 and the most pics of any pet on my phone currently!

In early December, I watched Roxy for 56 visits over a 2-week period while her parents were out of the country. Whew! Foxy Roxy and I had a great time!

I've done visits longer than a two week stretch, but not any that were four times a day like this one.

Roxy is a senior and had a change of diet and started medications right before the booking started, which was absolutely necessary but not optimal for having mom and dad gone for so long so I wasn't sure if that would cause complications.

Roxy did amazing and only needed the as-needed med one time. Her new food agreed with her the entire time. I worked hard with Rox to make sure everything was as smooth as could be. Her owners were happy to see her calm and relaxed when they arrived home. ♥️

This is one of my biggest success stories. Fortunately, I've cared for Roxy many times leading up to this long session so we both know each other's signals and mannerisms. We have created a great routine together, which is one thing that absolutely helps any pet.

I love you Rox and can't wait to see you again very soon! ♥️

This sweet girl is Pepper. I met her for the first time in March and have had the pleasure of caring for her many times since. Most of the bookings with her are at least 4 days long but some have been a week long, like this last booking at Christmas.

Before I started caring for Pepper, she wouldn't eat very well while her owners were gone. I'm not sure what is different with me, but I've never had an issue getting her to eat. 🤷 She doesn't always eat it right away but she will have eaten her food by the time I come back for the next visit. This obviously makes her parents very happy and allows them to worry less when they're away from her.

Happy tummies make happy pets. Happy pets make happy owners. Happy owners = Happy me!

Some tidbits about my petsitting business for 2024.

For the first time of any year ever, Christmas week beat Thanksgiving week in revenue and tips. Christmas 2024 is now my record week. This was my third holiday season in business.

However, July 2024 is my highest MONTH in revenue and tips. What the heck was going on in July? 🤷

I brought on 42 new clients and maintained most of my existing clients. I created one new service and currently have a total of four!

I am starting 2025 with over 4500 home visits completed. Not a single missed visit. That's an impressive track record!

Stories for 2024 include Stella the dog bringing me a decapitated bunny head. The Culliton cats trying to catch the house on fire. One family was delayed on the west coast and one family was delayed on the east coast at the same time due to the worldwide internet outage over the summer. Both families made it home a day or two late. Many other flight delays and a client with car trouble who was stuck in New Mexico for five days while the car was being fixed.

Anyone who thinks petsitting is easy needs to spend some time with me! 😉

My training focus for the next few months is to become a Fear Free Certified Petsitter.

The easiest way to explain this training and who/how it benefits is to give you the example of my cat, Sawyer.

Sawyer has extreme anxiety over getting in her kennel to go to the vet. Once she's at the vet, she does OK (not great though!), but she has still been stressed for quite a while from me trying to even get her in the kennel.

Stress in a pet makes it not just harder for the vet/team to handle and causes stress on the pet owner, but can also change the blood work for the pet. A change in levels could indicate an issue that really isn't there or mask an issue that is truly there since it might be overlooked as the pet just being anxious.

Taking a step back even further, since many cats tend to be very similar to my Sawyer, cats are half as likely to be seen by the vet as dogs which means they tend to get less care than dogs. Owners don't want to subject their pets to the stress so they tend to only go once a year if that.

So, IF fearful, stressed or anxious pets can get to the vet, by the time they get there, it won't be as great of an experience as it could be. The tests and readings may not be as accurate and even basic care may be harder to attain.

My goal is to work with my clients who have these types of pets. I have more cat clients in mind, but I do have a few dogs as well. Not sure what the service will look like. It might be more of a train the human service.

There is one local vet office currently in Wichita that is Fear Free Certified. I hope to be able to team up with them and learn more about how I can help my clients. Below is a list of what a fear free vet office offers. I'll be posting more about the training as I work through it. I can't wait to learn more about how to better help my pets that I care about so much!

Low-stress handling to help reduce feelings of lost control or being trapped

Positive reinforcement

Food motivation with treats to reward pets

Cat-only and dog-only exam rooms

Use of pheromone sprays to encourage a sense of calm

Couches and comfortable furniture instead of metal exam tables

Two hands up for Milo the pretty boy! 😍

I watched him over Christmas break and then again at New Years. We always have so much fun.

He was strutting his stuff, knowing how gorgeous he is!

2024 was an amazing year and I can't wait to see what 2025 holds for the business!

I've dreamed of being a business owner since I was 12 so I'm living my dream. Thank you to all my clients who have made this possible.

My main goal every year is to keep my current clients satisfied before bringing in new clients. My client retention was 92%. Most of the clients I lost moved out of my service area or their pet passed away and they no longer need my services. New clients are important but the business doesn't grow without my foundation being strong.

Another one of my goals each year is to complete one in depth training and create a new service around that training. For 2024, my training focus was "bonding with pets through gentle touch and massage". This led me to create my signature bedtime tuck in service which works well for pets who might need a bit more attention and support to get ready to relax for bedtime. I have a few clients who this service works perfectly for and the owners, the pets and I couldn't be happier!

My training for 2025 is through Fear Free Pets and focuses on helping Fearful, Anxious and Stressed (FAS) pets become less FAS. I'll post more about my training as we go. Creating a service around the training will be a challenge for sure. I also hope to team up with a local vet office this year that is Fear Free certified.

Thanks for joining me on this ride! I can't wait to see what 2025 has in store for your pets and I!

We're in the middle of a blizzard warning... So, what does that mean for your pets in my care? Well... Not much actually.

Pets still need to be checked on regularly. I'm no stranger to checking weather and road conditions, shoveling snow both at my home and clients homes (my vehicle has gotten snowed/iced in at a client's home before even.)

On top of the obvious cold weather gear including thick wool socks and heavy leggings , I also have shoe cleats to fit over my knee high boots for traction. I have a headlamp and shoe lights in case my client's home has lost power by the time I get there (yep! That's happened which is why I don't use garage codes to enter the premises). I have a foldable shovel in my trunk. I also have a bag of ice melt to give my tires traction in the snow.

I'm blessed to have my husband's SUV which not only does better in snow than my vehicle but it also has heated seats and remote start for the win!

Don't forget that I have to shovel my own driveway to get my car out of the garage before I even head out to visit the pets and possibly shovel some of their area in order for the pets to go outside! 🥶

I don't post this for sympathy. Rather so that no one worries about what they're getting when they sign up with me.

If I'm ever caring for your pets in inclement weather, I will be in contact with you so you know exactly what to expect. At times like this, the biggest thing I ask for is flexibility. If I'm shoveling snow and doing visits with no power, I am slowed down a bit. Every pet gets the best care each time I see them, but everyone does get taken care of!

Stay warm!

A huge thank you to all my clients for supporting the business this year and making this possible! What better way to wrap up the year and celebrate Christmas than to support pets in need?!

As a way of giving back to the community this holiday season, Shannon's Safe At Home Petsitting donated several hundred dollars worth by purchasing items off the Wichita Animal Action League (WAAL) Angel Tree at Pet Supplies Plus. Not all items are shown in the photos.

The business also purchased several items from The Kansas Humane Society's Amazon wish list.

Let's hope all the pups and cats find good use of the items they're provided. ♥️🎄

I can't wait to see how to better partner with the community in 2025!

Anything can happen when pets are left alone—and cats are no exception.

From potentially lethal ailments like the urethral blockage to potential home damages from a cat accidentally loosening a water hose behind a washing machine, or cats turning the stove on and creating major smoke damage, not checking on a cat daily while the owner is away can be costly—or tragic—consequences for the home and the cat.

Good morning and Merry Christmas! 🎄🎅

Christmas is always a special day for me with my pet clients! We dance to Christmas music, talk about whether they were on the naughty or nice list (for the record, none are on the naughty list) and last night, I read the T'was the night before Christmas story to all the pets. Some clients leave gifts for their pet to open so that's fun! I'm so blessed to be able to do what I do and love the pets in my care!

This week is my busiest yet so I am always looking for ways to enjoy every moment.

The pet in the pic is Daisy, my own sweet girl, who always acts like she's in trouble. No pets were hurt in the making of the pic. 😉

I need your help! I've been trying hard to figure out how to give back to the community in a way that truly helps pets.

Due to how my LLC taxes are filed, if the business just donates funds, it will show as a personal donation from James and I. In order for it to fall under the business, it needs to be a sponsorship of sorts.

My first thought was to sponsor a pet adoption with a local pet agency and provide a care package for the pet (new bed, blanket, toy, collar and food). However, the agency can't state that the adoption fee has been covered until the pet adoption is in process. So, my sponsorship wouldn't really help the pet, it would just help the adopting family, which isn't really what I'm looking for. I want something that helps the homeless pets needing a good home.

Any thoughts? Ideas? What is a true need that I could sponsor? I'd like to have an idea of what I'm looking for before I reach out to agencies.

Thank you!

In the pet care industry, trust is everything. I earn it by showing clients that, come what may, I have their pet’s best interests at heart—and that I'll keep them informed every step of the way.

In a perfect world, every visit would run smoothly and no detail would ever be overlooked. But the real measure of professionalism comes when life throws a curveball. Being upfront, honest, and proactive in how I address challenges can turn a rough situation into a chance to deepen client confidence.

Clear communication isn’t just a courtesy—it’s an investment in trust. Whether it’s sending a quick update about a delay, checking in after an unexpected issue, or apologizing when I missed a detail, open dialogue transforms misunderstandings into mutual respect.

The client needs to know and be confident that I will keep a meticulous eye on their pet and will let them know about major issues that arise. They know that if they haven't received a call from me, all is well even though I do send complete reports at each visit.
