Make the most of Lockdown!

As restrictions are set to ease over the coming weeks many owners will be returning to the work place and for some, this means leaving the dog home alone.

Many owners have been saying that they will need to address their dogs separation anxiety when they return to work but in reality, that is a little too late!

The BEST time to train your dog to cope with being alone is whilst you are not having to leave them!

Our aim is to not let your dog go over threshold and exhibit a stress response during training.

If you have a dog suffering with Separation Anxiety then take action now and book a call.

As we head into another lockdown in England on Thursday November 5th so we may expect to see firework parties being held a day earlier, Wednesday November 4th.

For some dogs, the firework season with all the sights and sounds of fireworks may cause them to be incredibly anxious and experience high levels of stress. The stress hormone Cortisol may take up to 72+ to return to normal levels.

A few ideas to help make things a little easier for your dog during this time:

1. Take your dog out for exercise earlier in the day and ensure they have a last minute toilet break before the fireworks begin.
If they do need to toilet whilst fireworks are being let off then pop them on a lead and stay outside with them.

2. Draw the curtains/blinds and turn the TV or radio up a notch to try and muffle some of the sound.

3. Not all dogs are overly anxious and for these you may be able to distract them with treats, playing games or even some indoor training to take both your and their minds off the fireworks.
Remember if you are feeling anxious and awaiting that first whoosh and bang, your dogs will pick up on that and may become anxious too.

4. Ensure they have a safe place to go to such as a crate, a den, a pen or a quiet area of a room where it is all snuggly and away from windows and doors. You may like to consider popping a cover over their den area.

Ensure they have fresh water and perhaps some treats or something to chew on. Some dogs may be too afraid to eat or chew so let them make the choice.
Do not disturb them but be nearby in case they need your comfort.

5. Over the years advice has been to ignore your dog if it is afraid. Providing comfort to your dog does not make them more fearful, fear is an emotion which you cannot reinforce.
If your dog does not want to stay close to you and prefers its den then let them go there, but if they seek comfort or reassurance from you then go ahead and give them that.

Take care & keep safe x

Good morning and welcome!

I hope you are enjoying this glorious weather!

Please remember though, unlike us humans our little Yorkies are unable to unzip their coats to cool down so they can become very hot in a very short space of time!

Over the last few days I have seen so many dogs pounding pavements ...the temperature outside has been as high as 29 degrees!

This is too hot to be exercising our beloved dogs especially on pavements and tarmac!

The little pads on their paws are generally tough for sure but they can only take so much heat before they become very sore and blister!

Heat stroke is another thing to be aware of so please do not ignore the warnings!

Dogs can die in less than 15 minutes from heatstroke!

Working our way through the body, here a brief reminder of what to look out for...
Brain - Seizures
Mouth - Red, Purple, Blue Gums and tongue. Heavy panting and drooling. Vomiting.
Eyes - Panicked look and glazed
Heart - Rapid racing heart beat
Body - Hot, raised temperature
Legs - wobbly, staggering

What to do if your dog is in danger of heatstroke....

🐾 Ensure your dogs are away from direct sunlight
🐾 Place on top of wet towels
🐾 If you have a fan switch it on
🐾 Offer tiny amounts of tepid water
🐾 Apply tepid water to pads of paws, chest & underarms

If you think your dog is suffering from heatstroke CONTACT YOUR VET immediately.

Take care and keep both yourselves and your dogs safe.

National Yorkshire Terrier Day!

These days there seems to be a national day of celebration for almost everything and of course, the list of events would not be complete without 'The National Yorkshire Terrier Day!" ... which happens to fall on this weekend!

In all probability every day is National Yorkie Day when you have a Yorkshire Terrier in your life!

It would be great to meet your Yorkies! Feel free to pop up a photo, tag a friend and invite them along too!

About Yorkshire Terrier Dog Training & Behaviour by Jan

Hello and welcome to Yorkshire Terrier Dog Training and Behaviour by Jan.

My name is Jan Rawlings founder and owner of Yorkshire Terrier Dog Training & Behaviour by Jan, a canine consultancy that delivers a vast range of dog training and behavioural services to owners and their Yorkshire Terriers.

Yorkshire Terriers, also known as Yorkies have been treasured members of our family for as long as I can remember. These intelligent little dogs have a big personality as many Yorkie owners will already know!

We love, know and understand the breed inside and out! They are our passion!
