Is your dog struggling with weight issues? ๐Ÿพ Our animals rely entirely on us for their nutrition, exercise, and mental stimulation, making them particularly susceptible to weight gain.

In my latest blog post, I delve into how our behaviour as caregivers directly impacts our dogs' behaviour, weight and overall health. By understanding the connection between our actions and their well-being, we can take meaningful steps toward preventing and managing canine obesity.

The researcher/author, Roz Pooley, rightly states in one of her posts:

"Imagine if this case had gone to a professional who didn't take an in-depth history that enabled them to identify health related factors.
Imagine if this case was seen by a 'one and done' professional, who didn't continously review how the dog was responding to the behaviour modification plan and make adjustments accordingly.

Imagine if this case, an entire male dog, saw a professional who immediately suggested surgical castration or even psychoactive medication, rather than assessing the necessity of both and aiming to work through a casacade of intervention.

The dog remains entire. Psychoactive medication was not necessary in this instance, although for some cases needs to be considered and sometimes even as a matter of urgency.

Imagine if this case saw someone who thought the problem behaviour could simply be trained out of the dog, perhaps even using aversive training methods.

When you address behavioural issues adequately and promptly, you are giving your dog the opportunity for a good quality of life, and yourself the opportunity to develop a good relationship with your dog and lead a calmer life.

There are no quick fixes and progress can be affected by many factors, as outlined in the pics below.

Some of these factors are not within our control, but some are: e.g. seeking help promptly (not letting the behaviour issue go on for a long time without proper intervention), choosing the right professionals to help you achieve change, and your commitment to professional recommendations.

Great tips below on dog play.
Not only handy for the dog park if you choose to go, but you can also use this guide to help you choose a boarding kennel or dog day care:

e.g. do staff intervene when needed or are non-play dog-dog interactions being thought of as play and allowed to proceed?

Sometimes this can be determined through in-person visits before your dog goes, or even through videos that the kennel and daycare may post on social media.

Not interrupting certain dog-dog interactions when necessary may put dogs at risk of being stressed, of being put in a situation where they may feel the need to behave aggressively, of being bitten, of developing negative associations with the place as well as with other dogs.

So, let us empower ourselves with the necessary knowledge so that we are in a position to advocate for our dogs and prevent behavioural issues as much as possible!

Being frantically chased is not playโŒ
You may have noticed this yourself. ๐Ÿ‘€....if play is allowed to get to that hyper, frantic play, signals are not given well, and not received well and that can lead to big issues.๐Ÿ’ฅ
Maybe you expect your dog to play with all other dogs.โ“
Guess what ?
Dogs do not need to play with all other dogs, in fact it is healthy to be choosy with who they interact with.
Dogs have the right to consent to play or not.
Just because we wish them to play does not mean they consent.

Toys.
So many issues arise with dogs playing with their own toys around others they do not know.
They can be highly prized items. The simplest way to avoid issues is don't play with your dogs toy around other dogs you do not know and even if you DO know them caution is needed.
Many dogs do not like to share.

Pairing dogs with different play styles and energy can cause big problems.. A dog that constantly chases may not read the "cut off" signals given by the less energetic dog.

Always listen to the little voice inside....and if you are at all unsure, advocate and stop play, or don't allow it to even start.

๐ŸšฉRED FLAGS๐Ÿšฉ

Yikes, lately I have seen so many ads for dog training services, tools, and courses that make me absolutely cringe. If you didn't know, dog training and dog behaviour consultancy is UNregulated. So although there are certifying bodies out there that offer some assurance, there are a huge array of competency levels and anyone can "set up shop" and call themselves whatever they want (professional, expert, behaviourist...) even with no education, experience, or humane practice.

That puts a lot of the honus on canine caregivers to find someone who is, indeed, professional, knowledgeable, and skilled. And without the RED SEAL of approval by one large overseeing body who test and police their members, it can feel like wading through sludge for the few gold coins at the bottom of the well.

Here are my RED FLAGS (things that should make you think twice):

๐Ÿšซ The person is offering a "fix." Dogs are living, reacting, emotional animals like you and me. They do not need fixing, they need to learn skills, feel safe, be set up to succeed, and learn alternative ways of behaving.

๐Ÿšซ Ad offers guarentees. Nope, impossible. Behaviours can be managed. We can improve the environment. We can weaken and strengthen the chances of behaviours occuring. We can set the dog up for success. We can strengthen the relationship, increase feelings of trust, help them to feel safe and understood so that they do not feel the need to behave in ways that served them in the past. But we cannot guarentee the behaviour or reaction of another being.

๐Ÿšซ The ad says "You will achieve X behaviours in just Y days!" For example, I saw an ad yesterday saying, "Have an obedient dog in just 10 days!" No. Just no.

๐Ÿšซ The ad uses dominative terminology, like "obedience" or "command." This is super outdated which makes me question just how outdated their practices might also be.

๐Ÿšซ They say they have X years of experience but they don't have certifications. This one is tricky because some people who do not have certifications are great. Some people have certifications but those certifications are pretty terrible. To me, however, education and qualifications are important. So take a moment to read about the certifying organisation from which they received their credentials.

๐Ÿšซ They are not transparent about their methods. Lots of people will say they "use positive reinforcement" to train, which they likely do. But what else? What equipment do they use? And how about dealing with unwanted behaviours? What do those strategies look like?

๐Ÿšซ Gimmicky type marketing, like, "sign up for this free e-book or this free 7-day challenge!" Teaching dogs is not a challenge, it is about building a great, communicative relationship and it's worth investing in someone who is qualified to give you the right advice.

๐Ÿšซ Claiming that the use of "e-collars" to teach a dog a behaviour (another name for shock collars) "does't hurt" or it is "only on vibration" so it's harmless. Even if the setting is low or on vibrate, even if the dog isn't THAT uncomfortable with the stimulation it delivers, this is a good indication that this person doesn't understand learning science properly which is concerning. These tools are literally designed to work as negative reinforcement or positive punishment (both requiring an unpleasant or aversive stimulus). At best, it doesn't work, at worst, well...

Ask around, check websites and socials to view pictures, (what are the dogs wearing for equipment, and what is their body language saying), check credentials and visit the websites of those credentialling organisations, sit in on a class, and ask questions.

You will be happy you did and so will your dog!

Trouble getting your puppy weighed at the vet?

Here is a great resource to watch and share with your vet and other dog owners - https://puppyschool.thinkific.com/products/digital_downloads/weigh-scales?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR0cpdqrdrskvcH9bH5U_Fz6y-SGPqNA5j5V93cq-uTGSoHGBlzD-CkOS90_aem_ZmFrZWR1bW15MTZieXRlcw
..weigh ins are often a first part of a veterinary visit....so starting off calmly helps to set a positive tone for the rest of the visit.

Download and share this resource to help your puppy/other puppies be happy about being weighed, keeping in mind that yanking or tugging at the lead/holding the puppy in position on the scales can lead to the puppy building a negative association with the scales and a struggle each time the puppy (and eventually adult dog) needs to be weighed in future.

Are you a veterinary professional looking to make puppy weigh-ins a breeze? Watch our 5 minute micro tutorial where you'll learn how to have even the wriggliest of puppies sitting calmly on the weighing scales.

So saddened by this news this morning..

I do not know any of the case details and the preventative advice below may not be at all relevant to this specific case - but wanted to take the opportunity to remind us all that:

- any dog can bite - do not assume that your dog "doesn't bite"

-active supervision of children and dogs is needed at all times- being in the same room with child and dog while doing the dishes/reading a book etc. Is not active supervision - if you cannot be fully attentive to what dog and child are doing, dog and child should not be left in the same area and should not be able to access eachother.

We have traditionally used physical signs such as lameness to help us decide if a dog requires a vet visit or even pain medication...but have we been getting it all wrong?

This study (https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fvets.2024.1374858/full) shows that dogs may be in significant pain well before they start to limp, and this can be visible as changes in behaviour e.g. increased fears, anxiety, changes in social interactions, change in sleep patterns.

If you notice a change in your dog's behaviour, or you suspect pain but cannot really point out why, trust your caregiver instinct and speak to your vet and veterinary behaviourist. Doing this early on:

-makes it more likely for any given pain medication to achieve the desired effect in your dog

-can prevent the development or the progression of behavioural issues

31/05/2024

It's time for Henry...it was also time for Henry this morning...last night...yesterday morning...and also a bit in between - I think you get the idea ๐Ÿ˜...and when it's time for Henry, Henry runs, digs and sniffs around looking for stones and little rocks...and when he is done, when these behavioural needs are met, he is such a happy calm boy.

On the days where life gets in the way, and he is exercising a little less, I can see he is able to tolerate much less of what life throws at him. Sometimes I think of him as an Olympian who needs to get his fix through daily training. Skip one session and we're on edge!

Do you also have a high energy dog in your house? Do you notice a difference in behaviour when they exercise a bit less?

Knowing that unwanted behaviour may stem from unmet behavioural needs, may help us be more patient and understanding - and motivate us to put in that effort to meet these needs, as much as possible.

And with that thought, Henry wishes you and your dogs a lovely weekend ahead! ๐Ÿ˜Š

29/05/2024

We often hear about the positive effects of dog ownership...but the potentially negative impact seems to be less openly discussed and somewhat stigmatised. If you are feeling the stress of sharing your home with a dog,

-know you are not alone - many struggle and this is not necessarily a reflection of your commitment as a caregiver

-acknowledge your feelings, be it stress, frustration, guilt or even embarassment about the way your dog behaves

- find personal support: speak to friends and relatives about your struggles

-seek professional help - early intervention for behavioural issues can achieve better results

-keep in mind that dogs are different - while your effort and commitment is essential for any behaviour to change, the degree of effort, the methods used, the results achieved and the rate at which these are achieved can vary between different dogs.

Post inspired by this article: https://brnw.ch/21wJZhx - I hope it is useful if you or someone you know is struggling.

The depiction below of how little we can infer about a dog based solely on its looks is so good!

Keep in mind when looking to adopt a dog: look beyond looks.

Watching and learning about the behaviour of the individual dog is more useful and certainly, do not rule out a dog based on what breed he appears to belong to.

't judge a book by its cover

Meet these two mixed-breed dogs with a similar percentage of American Pit Bull Terrier in their DNA. Despite their diverse appearances, they share over 50% of their genetic background, showcasing the complexity of breed labels. Studies on DNA variations in mixed-breed dogs have revealed substantial genetic diversity and differentiation among populations, challenging the simplistic approach of visual breed identification. Let's rethink how we label and perceive dogs based on appearance alone. Link in caption

Knee jerk responses to ban bully breeds in response to bite incidents or shelter overpopulation are not backed by experts, lack long term vision and are not the solution.

It is good to see major UK veterinary, shelter, animal welfare and animal behaviour organisations take a stance against the passing of legislation banning bully breeds being proposed by UK government.

The post I share below clearly explains why breed specific legislation is not the solution and how it can have detrimental effects.

The Dog Control Coalition, of which BVA is a member, has issued a statement following Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's plans to urgently define and ban American XL Bully dogs.

"Given that the pet training industry is entirely unregulated at present, anyone can tout themselves as a trainer or behavior consultant regardless of education, skill, knowledge or experience โ€“ or lack thereof. As a result, some of those who call themselves dog trainers.... may still be utilizing outdated punitive methods, such as ....devices and methods that work through eliciting a โ€˜startle response,โ€™ and/or an alarm reaction to prevent, barking, jumping up, growling or any other problematic behavior, and, in some cases, more extreme tools such as electric shock collars, choke chains and prong collars. All of these are, sadly, still at large. They are training tools that, by design, have one purpose: to reduce or stop behavior through pain and fear."

Empathy - an exclusively human emotion?

We have known for a while that dogs respond to human cries for help...but do they do so simply because they have learned to understand human signalling along the years?

Or are they actually capable of feeling empathy towards humans and be motivated to act as a result?

A recent study is suggesting the latter.

Dogs are thought to be very aware of peopleโ€™s emotions, but if a pupโ€™s owner was really upset, would he actually go out of his way to offer help and comfort? Some not only will, a new study found, theyโ€™ll overcome obstacles to do it.

So is there anything we can do to minimise this stress and avoid bite incidents?

A great read about focussing on making our dogs happy, rather than obedient.

When a dog is happy, it means that its physical and behavioural needs are being met, making it easier for the dog to exhibit more acceptable and desirable behaviours...which, in the end, will make their humans happier too.

A virtual dog model has been developed by the University of Liverpool in order to enable assessment of human behaviour around dogs prior to a dog bite and to educate humans about dog behaviour:

โ€œDog bites are a common public health issue affecting human-dog relationships. Studying human behaviour around a dog performing aggressive behaviours is ethically difficult, for the sake of the risk to the person but also, we donโ€™t want to be deliberately making dogs unhappy. A virtual dog solves these problems.โ€
