This video was taken in my backyard a little while ago. The sun is a tiny orange dot toward the end that you have to squint to see. The air quality here on Long Island is 190-233 depending which source you use, and the city is worse 353-362. which is "Hazardous" ... for reference normal is under 50.

PLEASE don't take this lightly - it is very serious. Keep your doors and windows closed and do not take your dogs outside!!!

Many parts of the country are experiencing poor air quality from the wildfires in Canada (including here in NY). Even pets (and people) who don't have pre-existing respiratory illnesses can be affected so here are a few tips on keeping your pups safe ...

* Keep pets indoors as much as possible, and keep your windows shut.
* Birds are particularly susceptible and should not be allowed outside when smoke or particulate matter are present.
* Let dogs and cats outside only for brief bathroom breaks if air quality alerts are in effect.
* Avoid intense outdoor exercise during periods of poor air quality. * Don't exercise pets until after dust and smoke have settled.

PLEASE seek the advice of your vet if your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms ...

* Coughing or gagging
* Difficulty breathing, including open-mouth breathing and increased noise when breathing
* Eye irritation and excessive watering
* Inflammation of the throat or mouth
* Nasal discharge
* Asthma-like symptoms
* Increased breathing rate
* Fatigue or weakness
* Disorientation or stumbling
* Reduced appetite and/or thirst

This little girl is a dream. She’s been eating and drinking well and has used the wee wee pads every time. She really is as happy as a clam. She was hopping around the living room like a bunny.

I love all of my babies but some are truly unforgettable ... I remember every late-night feeding to give them a few extra calories, every whispered prayer that they will have gained at their daily weigh-in, and every moment spent choosing just the right family for those pups. And then I see a post with pics of a beautiful, healthy, and happy Yorkie on her 8th birthday and it's all worth it.
