We are disappointed to announce that we will no longer be open Saturdays after August 3rd. Here at Valencia Animal Hospital we understand that this is unwelcome news. Unforeseen circumstances have risen that make being open on Saturdays currently impossible. It is our hope sometime in the future that we will be able to bring them back for good. Until then, we appreciate everyone's patience and understanding with this matter.

Summer is here! And with the warm weather, mosquitos follow suit. Did you know that your pet can contract heartworm disease from mosquitoes? There are a lot of misconceptions about heartworm disease, here are some common ones we have heard in clinic:
-Heartworm isn’t in Arizona.
Unfortunately this is not the case, since the beginning of the year, 150 cases have been diagnosed in Pima County alone (and that's just the pets who get tested!)
-My dogs don’t go anywhere so they can’t get heartworm disease.
Mosquitoes come to you! Even indoor only pets are considered at risk.
-I don’t see worms in my dog's stools so it's fine.
Heartworms reside in the heart and are contained within the cardiovascular system, they will not be found in f***s.
-My pet isn’t sick, so they don’t need to be tested.
Testing before they’re sick is ideal. Heartworm disease is way cheaper to prevent than it is to treat. Dogs with heartworm disease don’t always exhibit symptoms until the infection is severe.
-I deworm my pets at home, so they are safe.
Only specific dewormers work for heartworm disease, and heartworm positive dogs should NOT receive prevention. If you unknowingly give dewormer to a positive dog, it can cause complications to their heart and endanger their lives.

So what do you do to prevent heartworm disease?
-Test your pets annually and get them on prevention. Ask us next time you’re in about the different options for prevention.
-Kiddie pools attract mosquitoes, drain and flip them between uses.

Symptoms of heartworm disease include, but are not limited to:
-Coughing
-Exercise intolerance
-Collapse
-Sudden blindness
-Decreased appetite
-Fatigue
-Weight loss
-Nose bleeding
-Pale/blue gums
-Bloated appearance to abdomen

As the weather warms up and monsoon season rolls in, it’s important to remember that wildlife will be emerging for the summer. Here are some important things to remember for rattlesnake and toad season:
🐍Even if you live in town, snakes and toads can still get in your yard.
🐍Any suspicious swelling should cause alarm, you will not always be able to see puncture wounds with snake bites.
🐍Baby snakes envenomate more than adults.
🐍Every second counts, general practices like us typically do not carry antivenom, it is best to go directly to your nearest emergency facility.
***Civano Animal Hospital (Houghton and Drexel)
***VCA Valley Animal Hospital (22nd and Rosemont)
***SAVS (Broadway and Prudence)
🐸Avoid leaving dog food and water bowls outside, they attract toads.
🐸Drain and flip over your kiddie pools between uses.
🐸Toad excrement is also toxic to dogs, not seeing or locating a toad doesn’t rule out poisoning.
🐸If you catch your dog with a toad in its mouth you can flush the mouth with water, however it is important to do so in a way the water flows out of the mouth. Ingesting the water can worsen the effects of the poisoning.

Recognizing the symptoms of either can help save your pet’s life.
☣️Rattlesnake bite symptoms include, but are not limited to:
Acute swelling after being outside
Bleeding
Pain at swelling site
Purple/blackening skin
Drooling
Panting
Restlessness
Lethargy
Weakness

☢️Toad poisoning symptoms:
Head shaking
Confusion
Seizures
Drooling
Pawing at face
Inside of mouth may appear inflamed or pale

There are snake and toad avoidance classes here in town. One organization is Animal Magnetism, with Dr. Vanya Moreno. If you are interested in group or private classes please call 520-440-5040.

Hey all, we know that everyone has been feeling the effects of the current state of the world after the COVID-19 pandemic. Our shelters in town have been hit the hardest, and capacities are at an all time high. Shelters are having an extremely difficult time keeping up with their populations. In this holiday season we are going to give the gift of giving. We are not asking for monetary donations, rather, here at Valencia Animal Hospital we are hosting a food, toy, and pet supply drive that will be gifted to our local shelters. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated.
