We take the time to truly understand each horse’s unique personality and temperament — and that’s the foundation of genuine, high-quality care. When you really know what’s normal for them, you can instantly sense when something isn’t right — when they’re uncomfortable, in pain, or simply trying to tell you something.

Today, one of our mares — normally the sweetest, most people-loving soul — gave a warning bite and a small side kick when touched near her back. That behaviour was completely out of character for her. So instead of labelling her as “grumpy” or “difficult,” we listened. We approached her with kindness and patience, found the source of her discomfort, and began helping her heal.

That’s what caring for horses truly means: listening. No horse is ever dismissed as “just like that,” “bad-mannered,” or “moody.” Every horse has a story, and it’s our job to understand it — to piece together their history, learn their individual needs, and uncover the root cause of any change in behaviour.

Because we know this mare so well, we quickly realised her reaction wasn’t attitude — it was pain. She’d strained her back in the field over the weekend. Now that we’re treating her, she’s already feeling much more comfortable. 🩷

We could share so much about the deep relationships we build with our horses, and how observing their herd dynamics and social interactions is an incredible tool for monitoring their wellbeing.

We are so grateful to receive beautiful testimonials like this 🥰 about your horse as much as you do. ❤️

I couldn’t have asked for a better place for my horse to spend his retirement and rehab than at Cross Trees. He can be a tricky character with plenty of quirks, but Amy and the team treated him with such patience and understanding.

I was moving to Australia, and nervous about being so far away. Amy took the time to listen to all my worries and his special requirements, which gave me so much peace of mind. The Cross Trees community itself is so welcoming, and you instantly feel at ease with regular photos and updates shared on the group chat.

During his stay, he was also rehabbing from a check ligament injury that unfortunately required a long period of box rest. Thanks to the patience, calm handling, and dedication of Amy and the team, he stayed settled and came out the other side in great shape.

I’m so grateful for the level of care, communication, and kindness shown to both me and my horse. Cross Trees is truly a special place, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a retirement livery where horses are treated as individuals and loved for who they are.
