The Power of Openness
๐คThe Power of Openness: During a recent visit to a NYC dog park, I marveled at how dogs approach new acquaintances. They don't carry past judgments or reservations. Instead, they greet each new encounter with a heart full of openness and curiosity. They show us that embracing others without preconceived notions is the key to forming genuine connections.

Youโve likely noticed that your dog can tell when you're upset even without any external signs, and now you have some science to support your claim. Researchers have found that dogs can detect stress in humans using their most powerful sense: their sense of smell.
An article out of the United Kingdom published in September tested four dogs - Treo, Fingal, Soot, and Winnie - to see if they could detect stress hormones in sweat and breath samples taken from 36 people. The dogs were able to distinguish between baseline and "stressed" samples in 675 out of 720 trials.
Although most dogs can sense when weโre upset, how they respond can differ greatly. A calm, well bonded dog may try to comfort its owner by sitting close by and nuzzling them gently. An anxious or nervous dog might become agitated and act out in destructive ways. If you need help with an anxious dog, you can check out Alice Weldonโs book โThe Mindfulness Guide to Overcoming Dog Anxietyโ on Amazon.
