In addition to increasing the value of horses retiring from racing, the Thoroughbred Makeover is making its own economic impact on the aftercare industry: over $6.1 MILLION was invested by Makeover trainers in the care, maintenance and training of their horses for the 2023 competition. Since 2013, that total cumulative amount invested by participating trainers is over $40.6 million.

That's a total of over $6.1 million in 2023 that did NOT have to be invested into care, maintenance or retraining by aftercare organizations or for-profit entities, freeing up a significant amount of funding to apply instead to the rehoming, rehabilitation and retraining of more horses retiring from racing. The work of the Retired Racehorse Project and the impact of the Thoroughbred Makeover is therefore much further-reaching than the horses participating directly.

I am so excited! We have officially opened up the 2023 AQHA Stud C**t Ticket Purchases. All donations go to The Learning Tree, Inc. The c**t is donated by Coley Ranch and will be available for pickup after the raffle closes on May 5th.

2023 AQHA Stud C**t bred by Coley Ranch of Piedmont, Alabama. This c**t is destined to be your next all-around prospect. With color and a gentle attitude, this buckskin c**t has accepted every new task presented to him with little to no hesitation (ie bath, leading, groundwork). He is bred for cow and speed but can take on trails with ease!

Rookie is coming along nicely. This little gelding is available and will be in training until he finds his 🏡. Price increases with training.

5 year old grade Otoe bred gelding. Sound. Cowy. Learning to trust his handler. Low in pecking order in pasture. Not buddy sour. Could care less about mares and he’s pastured with only mares right now. Barefoot. Loads and trailers.

He’s difficult to catch but get some feed and he’s in your pocket. That’s getting better daily. He’s had some rough hands in his past. He can be fearful but not dangerous. His trust of humans is also gaining leaps and bounds daily. He will need soft hands and a gentle handle. Again, he’s getting better daily, and he’s only been in training a couple weeks. He was skinny upon arrival and he now looks way better. His glow up is one to watch!!!

Welcome to the Pine View family, Rookie. Follow along on his transformation. Rookie is a 5 year old QH with a blank slate. We will start from ground zero and instill a great foundation for his future. First, he’ll need a nutritional overhaul and increase his healthy weight. Lucky for him, he’s already a big fan of our soaked alfalfa and papaya puree.

My heart is broken. This kid grew with a horse, and as his horse retired, so did he from this world. God Bless this family and the extended race family they have gained over the years as well. What a journey 🤍🪽

2014 Registered Gelding, 16hh Palomino, Ranch/Head Horse. Loads, ties, stands for farrier, pasture ropes, trail rides, stands in the box, scores. As thick as he is tall! Easy keeper. No maintenance is required. Great feet. He is BIG, He is STRONG, but he is a BIG TEDDY BEAR! Low xx,###.

This is a PSA and a bit of a rant:
A lady approached me today. Said she was having a hard time finding someone to break her horse. Said she just wanted it broke to trail ride, nothing fancy. Said she’s been looking for a long time and someone told her they wanted 4900 to break it and to her that was outrageous. They didn’t want to show the horse they just wanted to trail ride.

I asked her how old the horse was. Her answer: 10 years old. 🙄 This is when I started smiling, nodding my head and replying “I’m sorry to hear that.”😬

Let’s break it down. ( We DON’T work for free because we ♥️ it as much as you want to believe that).

To get a TRUE 60 days on a horse it will have to be at the trainers for 3 months.

Rode one hour a day 5 days a week for 12 weeks.

To board a TRAINING horse it’s going to cost you at LEAST $350/ month with the basics of hay, grain, sawdust and daily stall cleaning. =$1,050 for 3 months

Now any trainer that’s going to be able to do anything worthwhile in 60 days needs to know their stuff. A trainer like this is going to charge upwards of $65/ hour. =$3,900 for 3 months

Total= $4,950

At the end of all of this, the absolute best you will get, is a Green broke horse. That means it will still spook, it will still buck and it will still bolt.

Now once said Horse is Green broke and you take it home, drop it in the field, wait two weeks till you decide to saddle up and go for a trail ride, then don’t do any prep (lunging, etc.), you sir or madam are asking to get hurt. What’s going to hurt worse is your feelings when you realize you spent all that money and you still can’t ride your horse cause you don’t have the riding skills to do so. (of course, let’s be honest, most will say it’s the trainers fault.)

In conclusion: Horses are expensive to own. They are expensive to ride. They are even more expensive to train. Once it’s been through training there is still a chance you won’t be able to ride it. Even if it’s “just trail riding”. 🤣🤣🤣

A truly broke and “safe” horse takes years of regular training, not months, to create. That’s why your 10-15 year old babysitters are 10k plus.

This has been your dose of reality.
