I support dog friendly stores like 🐶 This little dude belonged to an employee and accompanied us around the store.

Dog owners: Be respectful of stores that allow dogs inside and don’t ruin this cool policy for others. Do not take your dog into these stores if your dog has no training or is reactive and you cannot manage the dog or have poor handling skills.

One good reason to carry bear spray when going to parks where many untrained and uncontrolled off-leash dogs are. Get your dog off-leash trained and go to places where hikers, mountain bikers, and trail runners frequent. An uncontrolled pack of dogs can very dangerous.

One of the top functional behaviors every well trained off-leash dog should learn at some point — the distance down.

I teach a functional heel to clients. I don’t teach “loose leash walking” normally defined as dog can do anything but not pull as the primary mode for walking with your dog. If your dog is not off-leash trained yet and you want to let your dog take a break to their business or sniff around for a bit, that’s where essentially loose-leash would come into play. Let the dog explore a bit but not pull you.

What I see a lot with loose leash walking is a dog reverting to pulling as well as zig zagging in front of the owner. This is a dog that has forgotten about their owner and is confused as to what their proper position is.

It’s much much more
clear to ask for a position for your dog next to your leg. Your dog does not need to be staring up in your face like you see in competition trials. Dogs have excellent peripheral vision and just like you and friend can walk next to each other on a hike without staring at each other ‘s face the whole time, so can dogs and they have the advantage of better peripheral vision.

Get your dog off-leash trained and allow him to explore. When other dogs, horses, and people are approaching ask for a heel on either side of you. Forget the loose-leash walking nonsense some trainers espouse like letting your dog pull you around on a sniffari during your whole walk. There needs to be balance and clarity in the relationship with your dog.

Lots of benefits for dogs at a playground such as confidence building, agility, balance, coordination, and habituation to environmental stressors. Start your dog on easier obstacles and work your dog up to more challenging ones rewarding with food or toy after they complete the obstacle.

After posing for some photos, Bacchus is released from his behavior. The release from a behavior is just as important as the behavior itself, which in this case was “Up” - Go to the highest part of an object and stay there until released.

My personal dog Bacchus is not a furbaby. He is a companion and a mountaineer at heart. I train dogs in order to build stronger relationships and clear communication with humans; the goal is to have a well trained canine companion to do shared activities with. Dog Parks and Doggy Daycare do nothing to further the relationship between human and dog. In fact, in many cases they have the opposite effect by creating a dog that values other dogs over you leading to behavioral problems that dog trainers now have to reverse.

I train dogs whose owners respect dogs for what they are: predators who have coevolved with humans to work with us as well as be our companions. To treat a dog as a “furbaby” is to anthropomorphize dogs as human infants which is a disservice to the species Canis Lupus Familiaris.

If you want a well trained partner to do fun activities with, I can help.

Bacchus and I summited Quandary Peak, our first fourteener yesterday. We reached a top elevation of 14,252 feet based on my GPS. Bacchus was a superstar; constantly checking up on me by hiking back down over boulders and massive scree fields down after getting ahead to motivate me to keep going.

We saw plenty of marmots and mountain goats on this adventure.

There will be many more 14er summits to come.

Hike and Train last Saturday at Chief Mountain with Grizzly and Bacchus. Bacchus served as a stable model dog teaching Grizzly boundaries as well as how to coexist peacefully with another intact male dog. Grizzly has had some negative experiences with other males dogs attacking him and the hope is that Bacchus can help break this association for Grizzly that other male dogs mean prepare to fight.

By the end of the day Bacchus and Grizzly had become hiking buddies.

Bacchus and Grizzly .grizzly participating in a snake avoidance class at the Colorado Gun Dog Club today.

Rattlesnake avoidance training for your dogs is a smart idea if you reside where rattlesnakes are prevalent. This is even more pertinent for owners who hike with their dogs in rattlesnake territory.

One important thing is to make sure that your dog is properly ecollar conditioned before taking part in the snake avoidance/aversion training to prevent sensitization to ecollar stimulation. This will allow a broader and more sophisticated use of the ecollar to reinforce behaviors (R-) as opposed to being a tool exclusively used for stopping or suppressing unwanted behaviors.

Proofing Jackson, the labradoodle, to the place mat with Bacchus serving as a distraction.

Jackson has some impulse control issues around other dogs, squirrels, and visitors to the home. A great management tool in the house is using an elevated place mat to give the dog a defined location and alternative behavior (with a strong reinforcement/reward history) in place of rushing the door in a highly excited state when guests come over. The place mat can also be brought outside to help develop impulse control in general around distractions.

Jackson, a labradoodle, and his owner. I a have started working with them (most importantly his owner) in private sessions to help him better respond to his owner. Jackson is a great dog, but has a history of being reinforced for the wrong behavior in addition to not being reinforced sufficiently for the proper behavior.

Several things we we worked on today were getting better engagement through proper uses of reward markers, reward delivery, and rewarding attention/focus to the owner.

Eli and Bacchus heeling next to me. Eli is on left (traditional “Heel” cue and position ) and Bacchus on the right (cue for right side functional heel is “Side”.)

When I stop, they both stop as well in stationary heel position (sitting next to my leg).

After heeling for almost a minute I release both of them with “Break”.

Distance downs are great for managing your dogs on hikes with a lot of mountain bike traffic. The bikers suddenly appeared while Bacchus was at some distance ahead of me. In this case I felt it more appropriate to have Bacchus in a distance down versus having him recall to me so they could easily and feel more comfortable riding past him while he was in a clear stationary position.

Eli at 150+ lbs was a super puller with poor impulse control when he was dropped off. One approach I took was teaching Eli a functional heel where his shoulder has to stay roughly next to my left leg. Additionally, every time I stop he sits next to me in heel position until I start walking again, give him another command, or release him. Eli is free to look at his surroundings and does not need to stare at my face or a focal point like a competition heel or focused heel.

For off-leash hikes, a functional heel is great for allowing you and your dog to continue moving in situations where you may want your dog next to you as an extra precaution, for safety, or trail etiquette such as oncoming or passing hikers, trail runners, mountain bikers, dogs or wildlife.

Eli, an Irish Wolfhound, came in on Monday for a two week board and train. Eli is over 150 lbs and become too much for his owner to handle. We will be working on obedience behaviors heel, duration down and sit, recall, leave it, crate, and going to place to make him manageable for his owner who weighs much less than him!

Working around horses with Mariska. She has reactivity around strange animals and I used a combination of food, leash pressure, and ecollar stimulation to reinforce her to be able to heel past these horses (others outside video frame) without blowing up.
