Edit: For the record, this is written in a judgy tone that I definitely don’t subscribe to. I just think it’s an interesting take- and true, but unless there are options for having dogs that fit better into our modern lives, then the judgement is unhelpful. Part of the reason so many dogs end up needing to be rescued is that they are a bad fit for modern dog ‘needs.’ Breeding toward the need is what humans have always done, and should be what we continue to do. Otherwise, we dishonor the historical dog-human connection. There’s a ton to say about that, but my belief is that we are responsible for making sure dogs remain useful to humans as our needs change. Otherwise we just have a ton of mismatched relationships doomed to fail.

————

This is part of our motivation for the breeding that we do. It’s a blend of health and temperament goals, and working towards dogs whose ingrained mission in life is to be a loving companion, but in large (compared to most companion breeds).

While you tend to get the hard traits with the desired traits in cross breeding dogs (and the unhealthy ones along with the hybrid vigor), the more you blend and breed for what you’re looking for in a dog, the more those working dog or small gene pool issues ease up. Just in first gen crosses, this can clearly be seen and enjoyed, as we have been doing, but we look forward to continuing to work towards the very best pet/companion purpose dog over here.

There’s nothing quite like having the just right dog for your needs and lifestyle. 💝

Everyone who is thinking of getting dogs should read this because you need to understand this reality:

***I am a 21st century dog.***
-I'm a Malinois.
Overskilled among dogs, I excel in all disciplines and I'm always ready to work: I NEED to work.
But nowadays I get asked to chill on the couch all day everyday.

-I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors were selected for fighting bears.
Today I get asked to be tolerant and I get scolded for my reactivity when another approaches me.

-I am a Beagle.
When I chase my prey, I raise my voice so the hunters could follow.
Today they put an electric collar on me to shut up, and you make me come back to you - no running - with a snap of your fingers.

-I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
I was a terrifying rat hunter in English mines.
Today they think I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

-I'm a Labrador Retriever.
My vision of happiness is a dive into a pond to bring back the duck he shot to my master.
Today you forget I'm a walking, running, swimming dog; as a result I'm fat, made to stay indoors, and to babysit.

-I am a Jack Russell.
I can take on a fox, a mean badger, and a rat bigger than me in his den.
Today I get scolded for my character and high energy, and forced to turn into a quiet living room dog.

-I am a Siberian Husky.
Experienced the great, wide open spaces of Northern Europe, where I could drag sleds for long distances at impressive speeds.
Today I only have the walls of the house or small garden as a horizon, and the holes I dig in the ground just to release energy and frustration, trying to stay sane.

-I am a border collie
I was made to work hours a day in partnershipwith my master, and I am an unmistakable artist of working with the herd.
Today they are mad at me because, for lack of sheep, I try to check bikes, cars, children in the house and everything in motion.

I am ...
I am a 21st century dog.
I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, I stay in a bag...but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.
Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.
I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.
You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually I’ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.
If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!
If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.
I’m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.
So think **very** carefully before you choose your dog. And think about getting two, rather than one, so I won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for me to be alone.

I apologize to those of you trying to message me. My messenger is being squirrely and I can’t open it. Will keep trying, just don’t want you to think I’m ignoring you.

Afton had JUST commented on how Pixie doesn’t like to play in dirt, like the other dogs. So she went right over to the dirt mountain and proved her wrong. Then she walked over to Afton and showed off her dirty snoot. lol

Just look at her royal fluffiness! She went from blowing her coat after each litter to being the fluffiest dog in the pack!

Ok, everyone. There’s a bot or some bored human spamming the page with links to shirts.

THIS IS NOT US.

We do have plans to make shirts and other fun things at some point, but so far we are having all our fun playing with the dogs and rabbits on the farm and haven’t made time to do them.

Honestly, if you want one of these, I’d support you running around in our logo all you want, no matter who made it. Lol

BUT, these guys are up to no good. Common sense suggests that they can’t be trusted to buy from. Just trying to save people from some trouble.

I’m deleting them but they’re making new comments and using new accounts as fast as I can ban the last ones, so this is a public service announcement to ignore them.

DON’T FEED THE TROLLS. 😬🥰

Puppy plans update!

We have had a lot of interest in info and wait lists recently, so I thought an update might be in order. ❤️

We are in a resting and waiting season this spring. Miss Pixie is scheduled to be fixed this coming Monday, and will be officially retired from young motherhood. She has been enjoying her new role as one of our mature ladies who help younger pack members behave themselves like ladies and gentlemen.

Pixie is very proper and likes to sit up straight and cross her ankles. I’m not even kidding. She also runs a tight ship with her offspring and is raising a lovely young son, Max, to remember his manners. We expect she will thoroughly enjoy her years as a senior pack member.

💝 Shiloh has passed her health testing and is going to be turning 3 next month. Her human is our teenage daughter, who will make the official call on whether Shiloh will be permitted to breed. Since pregnancy and whelping are not without significant risks to mama dogs, we want our daughter to make the decision that she is comfortable with. She has major puppy fever, though, so it is entirely possible that she will decide she’s comfortable with the risks.

THEN, the ball is in Shiloh’s court. So far, she has been fairly easy to keep not-pregnant (as opposed to Pixie, who seems to always be eager for more babies to mother). We will see if she even likes boys or babies. Lol

So, it is POSSIBLE that we will have some 75% Golden Retriever x 25% Newfie puppies this summer.

📝 IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE ON THIS LIST, message me or send in an application.

These puppies would likely be slightly larger for Golden Retrievers range- maybe 70lb as adults ish. They will likely be *very* playful and energetic, based on the potential parents. Shiloh and Fox are two of the most loving, bouncy, Velcro-based dogs I’ve met. They’re perfect for people who would enjoy a larger black golden retriever. 🙂 We would likely have some blondes in the litter, too. I cannot overstate their love of play and human interaction.

💝Beyond this summer, Charlotte is our young Newfie lady in waiting. She is busy growing up and loving muddy puddles and dirt. After she turns 2 in January, we will have her health testing done, and will go from there. These litters, if they come to be, will be 50% GR x 50% N and probably fairly large dogs, as Charlotte is already a big ol’ girl. Fox is medium sized for a Golden, so probably in the 85-100lb range as adults. Ish.

These should be very standard Golden Newfie cross dogs/puppies, and have the mostly chill, stubborn, loving, and friendly personalities that we know and love in the 50/50 cross.

SO- reach out if you have questions and we will keep you all posted!

This handsome big boy is Moose, known as a puppy as Mousse bc he was tiny and light and fluffy like a mousse. He worked so hard to stick around to grow up with his littermates, and my heart just explodes every time I see what a great dog he’s continued to be. Don’t you just want to wrap your arms around him in this pic?!? He’s such a very good boy.

Now known as Raven, our sweet, sweet baby girl has left the farm to go meet her older half brother, Linus. We couldn’t be more thrilled to know she will get to grow up with him. He was so loving and attentive with his tiny brother, Moose, when they were puppies. Now he will get to raise his very own little sister. 💝. We will miss you, little cutie!!!

Update: Our girl Mantis is going to go to her new home this weekend, where she will get to grow up with her older half brother. I’m so very happy for her and for their whole family. AND now the whole litter is within one region of the country, if they want to meet up for play dates. 🥹

Mantis is having a ton of fun now that she is big enough to be included in play time outside (under close supervision bc she’s still smol).

She is still waiting to find her just right people, so if you’re interested message me. 🙂

For the most part, people who love her can’t make the timing work and I’ve talked a lot of people out of her if they’re looking for different personality or body type. She is looking for someone who loves the golden leaning body type with silky smooth coat and less of a thick undercoat like the Newfie leaning puppers have. She will stay on the ‘smaller’ side (70lb max is my guess, but she could be up to 85/90 like Shiloh as a 2yo+) and lean vs bulky and brawny.

Of our pack, her older brother Max leans Newfie and Shiloh leans Golden. You can hardly tell a difference at a glance, but people who are drawn to one over the other sometimes are strongly drawn to that.

She is so incredibly sweet and laid back. She plays hard when she plays and the rest of the time she’s sleeping and laying around quiet like a mouse. She is happy in her play yard most of the day while learning potty training and staying safe from life as a puppy in a big dog house.

Her personality is wonderful for someone looking for a love bug who would do well with therapy work or emotional support. Her coat is downy soft, like our golden girl Mellow’s has always been. For a sensory someone looking for silky instead of dense fluff, she is wonderfully soft to pet. (I’m a sensory human, which is why I’m so intentional about describing their coats. She’s sooooo soft. 🥰)

She is truly a dream of a dog and I’m absolutely positive that her people are out there just waiting to run across a post about her at just the right time. I believe she is here bc the timing is working itself out. Until then, we are loving getting to be with her longer! 🥰

As a reminder, we are in Virginia in Middlesex county on the middle peninsula (about an hour and a half northeast of Richmond). 💝

Mantis week…15? This little lady is just the sweetest and calmest puppy. it’s funny bc she went through a very rowdy stage but now she is just as gentle as a little butterfly. 🥹 She gives fantastic hugs and does love to explore and be a puppy, but she just is the most chill dog. I think her bonus time with Kaniffee and her mama has rubbed off some of their calmness. Lol
