Who said cats can’t talk ?

I recently attended the home of a cat to do a follow up CCMRT (Bowen) treatment.

When I entered the house and spoke to his owner, the cat got up and left his sunny position at the back door to greet me.

He started purring and rubbing himself over my legs and shoes as we spoke.

The purring became louder and more animated, mixed with some unusual “throaty” and whistling sounds.

His owner commenting “They are his happy sounds. You really like her don’t you?”

His purring continued throughout the 40 minute treatment as did the head rubbing as well as some licking of my hand.

He was making it quite clear that he liked what I was doing and the way the treatment made him feel.

Cats do tend to respond well to this treatment.

I’ll take his behaviour as his tick of approval.

EMRT & new injuries

There is just a week between these 2 photos.

The one below is before the second treatment.

He was back out competing the week of his second treatment.

Whether the injury is old or new the EMRT treatment plan is the same.

However, the recovery with new injuries is often quicker because the postural compensations haven’t been held by the body for as long.

We have a new winner!

The previous record for consecutive yawning during a treatment was 8 in a row back in 2020.

This chap smashed it with 16!

Yawning as a response during an EMRT treatment is signalling that the horse’s parasympathetic nervous system has been activated - “rest and digest”.

Horses block out pain and discomfort because in the wild if they show pain or vulnerability, their survival is threatened.

An EMRT treatment works beneath the natural survival / blocking response.

This new record-breaking achievement may stand for a while 🏆💤✨

A topic of discussion at the workshop last weekend with the vets and nurses was in relation to Integration of rehabilitation and bodywork into vet practices. 🙌

A few take away points
❗️ Vets want to know more but there are limited avenues and it is not taught in vet school generally
❗️Vets are not taught about the relationship between whole body posture and injuries
❗️Vets don't have the time or knowledge to set up rehabilitation plans
❗️ We are way behind in our rehabilitation practices and Integration in Australia compared to overseas

Vets are reluctant to refer due to;
✴️Experiences where bodyworkers have made statements or done things that don't make sense to them
✴️A lack of knowledge of relevant bodywork qualifications and experience
✴️The fact that if they refer they feel the outcome is their responsibility
✴️An overall lack of knowledgable people in rehabilitation (even many rehabilitation facilities are lacking education)
✴️A lack of avaulable facilities
✴️Older generation Vets not being open or aware the value of rehabilitation modalities and plans

How do we improve it?
✅️Vets need more education within their degree and in practice of the importance and value of rehabilitation (there is more to it than bute and rest)
✅️Vets want communication
✅️Bodyworkers have to be clear to Vets on how they CAN communicate (I.e. they can't diagnose) and WILL communicate and what their training and skills are
✅️Training more rehabilitation technicians

❓️How do you think we can bridge the gap in Equine Rehabilitation in Australia?
❓️Have you had experiences where it has worked well?

“It’s like a factory reset”

Just as factory reset is used to restore an electronic device to its original state, an EMRT/CCMRT treatment may reactivate areas of tightness and dysfunction via the neurons of the nervous system.

The nervous system is the most complex in the mammalian body and can be likened to wires (neurons) sending messages to the central computer (brain).

Working with the nervous system via the neurofascial system influences all 12 body systems as well.

EMRT/CCMRT is a whole body therapy!

It’s been a busy few weeks treating dogs and newborn pups.

From birth to old age my role is to address muscular dysfunctions and postural compensations whatever the age or breed.

✅ Birth trauma
✅ growth spurts
✅ injuries
✅ mobility issues & pain in aging
✅ recovery following illness / surgery.

I’m here to help 😊🐶

This hero had hooves!

“ Bill the Bastard” rescued 3 additional men on the battle field and is now immortalised in a bronze sculpture.

He was one of the 120,000 horses sent overseas during WW1.

If you haven’t read the book, I thoroughly recommend it.

Lest we Forget 🙏🏻🐴💜

What a week!

This little one arrived on a wet Monday morning and was out of a maiden heifer.

The poor heifer had no idea how to be a mum.

Between our fabulous neighbours and the advice from a couple of wonderful women I’ve met through treating their animals, we got through!

She’s feeding off her Mum, without getting head butted or kicked.

The cow isn’t nasty, she was just very confused.

I was able to do some moves on her and Don milked her straight into the bottle!

We’re very grateful for the help and advice - thank you. 🙏🏻🐮💕

🤩 Foal Friday 🤩

EMRT is a gentle and effective modality for birth trauma and dysfunctions created during delivery.

If left unaddressed these dysfunctions may result in postural compensations and behavioural issues in later life.

Hoof issues such as unevenness and club hooves may also result from these restrictions.

For those interested in learning more about the effects of birth trauma, here is an article by Dr Ian Bidstrup BVSc;

Happy reading! 🤓

We are back home!

Over 3000kms covered during our Victorian adventure.

We stopped in Geelong to visit some of the wonderful people we’ve met through Bowen Therapy.

We also stopped at the monument to the man that started it all - Tom Bowen.

This work has led me to meeting some terrific people and I am truly grateful!

We are all just “passing through” and kindness is the new black 🙏🏻✨💕

Flat out healing

Although this beautiful boy is in a new environment, he reached the “rest and digest” response during his treatment.

This response is achieved through the parasympathetic state which is the most conducive to emotional and physical repair as well as restoration.

All he has to do is rest 😴🐶💕

Head-shy or headache?

While horses can’t tell us they’ve got a headache there are often behaviours that indicate they may have. Such as throwing their heads or avoiding being caught.

Sometimes it is a result of an injury like pulling back or young horses playing rough.

Training issues can cause tension in the poll and jaw. Other causes may be teeth, sinuses, blood sugar imbalances and hormonal changes in mares.

Physical signs may include;

📍Squinty eyes
📍Grumpiness
📍Blinking a lot especially when moving
📍Clumsiness, tripping and bumping into things

I discovered when palpating this horse the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) had a variation in the symmetry of the heads of the temporal bone/mandible. This may have caused the headache.

The photos show the vascular response where fluid is restored to the areas constricted by tension and dysfunction.

As a headache and migraine sufferer I can vouch for Bowen!

Footfalls indicate soundness and are a handy tool for horse owners.

Here are a few things to look out for when assessing;

❌Unevenness ie rushing

❌ limited range of motion through the shoulders & forelimbs

❌ shortness stepping through from behind

❌ resistance picking up canter leads

❌ tightness on one diagonal

There are many more and my understanding biomechanics, locomotion and tensegrity helps with my assessments when treating.

Long before the horse pulls up lame, there will have been signs the horse was sore/tight.

Addressing muscular dysfunctions before they become postural compensations and/or lameness issues through an EMRT treatment may keep your horse moving correctly and performing its job whatever that may be!
