Thanks to all who have offered to foster animals during these tragic fires. It truly does take a community to provide the kind of support that will be needed.

Please be sure to only foster through a reputable rescue to help ensure important protocols are followed, including:

❤️ Reviewing the foster animal's history and needs, including whether ok around children, what foods typically eat, what litter is used, etc., to increase chances of success at foster placement.

❤️ Confirming the proposed foster environment is a good fit for a foster animal, including the authority to foster (own property or lease allows pets), all in the household on board with fostering, number of children in household, number, and kind of other animals in the household, indoor and secure space including separate room available for foster quarantine period, screens on windows, ability to transport foster animal to the vet, and sufficient time and resources for needed care.

❤️ Ensuring an initial quarantine period for the foster animal to confirm that all vaccinations are up to date and that any communicable conditions are absent or resolved.

❤️ Preparing a written contract that makes clear who the owner is, who the foster is, and what each party's rights and responsibilities are, including what kind of care the animal will receive, who will be responsible for care costs, when/how does foster placement end, what happens if an owner does not reclaim the animal, and what happens if the foster refuses to relinquish custody of the animal.

Aloha e HAKA ‘ohana, friends, and supporters. Tuesday is the last day of 2024, and we’re really excited for what’s in store for 2025! As we prepare for our upcoming animal search and rescue training, offering our first community disaster preparedness courses, creating disaster education videos, and more, we are reflecting on the animals that we were able to help this year.

Did you know that in addition to our work in disaster preparedness and management, we also serve the animals of Hawai‘i in a variety of other ways? These include:

🐐🐇🐈🐕Serving as adoption partner to the County of Hawai‘i Animal Control and Protection Agency, helping find fosters and forever homes for the animals in their care, including bunnies, goats, and guinea pigs!
⛟➤🏠Rescuing and reunifying lost pets like the cutie we found running along Kea‘au-Pahoa Highway in August.
💻🖱Providing an online hub as a resource for pet parents looking for advice, recommendations, services, rehoming, and other information.

Please join us as we welcome the new year by supporting our work through a one-time donation, monthly donation, or by volunteering with us. Visit 808haka.org for more information or feel free to send us a dm!

This year, we’re grateful for the support of our community, volunteers, and partners who help us ensure no pet is left behind. Together, we’re building a safer, more resilient Hawai‘i for all creatures great and small. 🌺
