No rawhide this Christmas! Or EVER! It is a deadly, awful chew to give to your dog. Please don't.

Most of you know our longest resident, Chorizo, especially when he’s visiting friends at local stores and nursing homes under the expert guidance of “Uncle Ted” Aranda. Chorizo usually has a pep in his step and a huge smile on his face when he’s out of the shelter, going on adventures and working his brain.

Unfortunately, most of you don’t know the other side of Chorizo - the extremely stressed out version who has spent the last year and a half living in a kennel, surrounded by other dogs, loud noises and strange smells.

Imagine trying to maintain your sanity while trapped in an office cubicle for months on end, right next to co-workers you don’t like, while only getting relief during daily lunch breaks. You might start to lose your mind a little bit, right?

That’s what’s starting to happen to Chorizo and we’re desperate to save him before we lose him completely.

While we’re extremely lucky to have Ted Aranda working daily with this incredible dog and staff members who devote as much time to him as possible, living in an animal shelter will never compare to living in a home with a family of his own.

Luckily for Chorizo, the longer he’s been with us, the more we’ve been able to learn about him and his needs going forward. We know this special boy needs a home with no other pets and an experienced adopter who will continue his training and socializing. Bonus points if you’re more stubborn than Chorizo.

We know this one-of-a-kind dog has the potential to change someone’s life for the better and we’re hoping we can find them before Chorizo loses himself. He’s had several families interested in him since he’s been with us, but most of those families have either had other pets at home or fell in love with “easier” dogs.

Chorizo is looking for someone willing to believe in him. Someone willing to uncover the “diamond in the ruff” and give him the chance he desperately needs. Are you that someone?

If you’re not a potential match for Chorizo, you can still help him by sharing this post far and wide. Maybe his forever family lives on the other side of the country!

If you’re interested in giving Chorizo a forever home in time for the holidays, please sign up to adopt at lenhumanesoc.org or call 517-263-3463 for more information.

P.S. Ted Aranda is offering several free training sessions to help set you up for success and to help Chorizo acclimate to home life with you! Even if you aren’t local, we’ll make sure you have his phone number!

⚠️ NEVER underestimate the impact that YOUR stress levels have on your horses and dogs! ⚠️

This is Herx coming down after a week's worth of absorbing my study deadline stress. Today was the last day. You can see the effect my compounding study stress has had on my dog but you don't notice it until there is contrast and the stress is gone.

How does this happen?

Both horses and dogs have the ability to smell something you can't...
Glucocorticoids (cortisol) and adrenaline.

These are hormones and neurohormones that are produced when the mind experiences stress/trauma.

Cortisol in particular is a hormone that, when released in high levels, can be sustained at high levels, unlike adrenaline that is fast acting but also fast to deplete.

Cortisol is an essential hormone for consciousness and alertness, but when secreted in prolonged high amounts has some negative mental, emotional and physical effects.

When you experience compounding stress you won't necessarily notice it because it is slowly compounding (like building blocks of lego).

What you may eventually notice is:
🧨 you become a little less tolerant to things you would normally tolerate
🧨 you may become a little more over sensitive mentally and emotionally
🧨 you may experience memory loss
🧨 you may struggle with a lack impulse control
🧨you may have problems with reasoning and risk assessment
🧨 you might find you struggle with attention and focus
🧨 you may develop problems getting to sleep or staying asleep (insomnia)
🧨 you may find you might develop some anxiety and/or depression
🧨 you may have difficulties regulating your emotions
🧨 you may experience sensory overload problems
🧨 you may find you do things that help you feel distracted from your emotions and stay stimulated as much as possible

These things slowly creep in without you knowing it.

In the meantime, your dog is smelling the little fluctuations and surges in your cortisol levels as the baseline rises to new levels, your horse is smelling it to!

You can't smell cortisol so you aren't even aware that your dog or horse is responding to the information you are unknowingly and unconsciously giving them.

⚠️ This scent is a warning system to your dogs and horses ⚠️
This scent says "I feel under threat, be alert and vigilant of me and around me".

When you release this scent, you will display corresponding microexpressions in your body language to. So now your body smells like danger and your body looks like danger. This is a lot of information for your dog and horse. It speaks VOLUMES and 100% trumps ANYTHING you say verbally to your animal. They'll believe EVERYTHING your smell and body says over what your words say.

And we wonder why our dogs and horses don't want to partner up when we want them to!

🫵 So check in with yourself first.
🫵 Do some deep breathing.
🫵 Check your body for areas that are holding tension.
🫵 Acknowledge any emotions that you're holding on to without having an opinion or validation.
🫵 Data dump whatever thoughts are running around in your head.
🫵 Take a walk and MAKE time for yourself
🫵 SLOW YOUR MOVEMENT DOWN!!!

Happy brain training 🧠
Charlotte 😊

Come trot with us on the first Saturday of each month!

The AKC FIT DOG Turkey Trot is a virtual 5K (3.1 miles) that people do with their dogs. This non-competitive 5K Turkey Trot can be done all at one time, or in smaller segments on multiple days so that everyone (people and dogs) can participate at their own pace. This can be a walk or run activity.

This year, Turkey Trot proceeds will be used to support programs for AKC Juniors. Juniors participate in multiple AKC events, and they can earn scholarships for their education.

Details
Between September 1, 2023, and December 15, 2023, you and your dog can walk/run your 5K.
The 5K (3.1 miles) can be walked/run all at once for people and dogs who are fit, or you may break your 5K into as many days/sessions as you need to keep you and your dog safe.
You and your dog can do the Turkey Trot on your own, with a group of friends and their dogs, or with your AKC FIT DOG club.
This Turkey Trot can be done anywhere that you and your dog are welcome to walk/run – in a local park, on a trail, or in your neighborhood.
We are keeping the Turkey Trot open past Thanksgiving for those who are running/walking in segments.
Registration Fee
$20 donation, includes the 3” Turkey Trot medal with a ribbon.
How It Works
Between September 1, 2023, and December 12, 2023, complete the 5K (3.1 miles) with your dog. This can be all at once, or in as many days/sessions as you need.
Document your distances and times on a smartphone, smartwatch (or similar device), or on a written log.
Order your attractive AKC FIT DOG Turkey Trot medal.
The AKC FIT DOG Turkey Trot is done on an honor system. We are allowing medals to be ordered now so that AKC FIT DOG clubs and participants have them in time for Thanksgiving Turkey Trot photos.

The Turkey Trot counts toward AKC FIT DOG title points!
