Dogs are incredible creatures, but we can’t ignore the instincts hardwired into them. Breeds that were developed for specific jobs—like hunting, herding, or guarding—often have behaviors and drives that can override even the best training.
For example, a hound catching a scent or a herding breed spotting movement may feel compelled to chase, even if they know their recall command. It’s not because they’re “being bad.” Their DNA is just shouting louder than your voice in that moment.
Does that mean recall training is pointless? Absolutely not! But it does mean we need to:
1️⃣ Build their recall step by step, even with distractions.
2️⃣ Manage their environment during training to prevent unwanted behaviors.
3️⃣ Have realistic expectations—sometimes instincts will win out.
Remember, training is a lifelong process, and no dog is “perfect.” Be patient, consistent, and celebrate progress (even the small wins)! 🙌🐕
