PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE USE SUITABLE HEATING EQUIPMENT!

A serious post this afternoon.

As a shop we always advise people against using heatmats in wooden vivariums. This is the reason. This was sent to us this morning by one of our customers, who had a heatmat inside a wooden vivarium, with a thin layer of substrate over the top. When this is done, the heat gets trapped and can cause the mat to overheat and set on fire.

Thankfully it was spotted quickly and the damage was kept to a minimum and the gecko is absolutely fine. I have been given permission to share this picture with you.

If you need to heat a wooden vivarium, please stick with overhead heating with appropriate guards over them and thermostats
