🌟 Why Coaching Insurance is Essential for Every Coach 🌟

In the journey of coaching, preparation meets opportunity. But, what about the unexpected? That's where coaching insurance steps in. ✨

1. Protection: Insurance shields you from unforeseen accidents, ensuring that everyone can focus on what truly matters - growth and excellence in the sport. 🛡️

2. Professionalism: Carrying insurance highlights your commitment to safety and professionalism, building trust with students and parents alike. 👩‍🏫👨‍🏫

3. Peace of Mind: Knowing you're covered provides peace of mind, allowing you to dedicate your energy to nurturing talent without the worry of potential liabilities. 🌈

Investing in coaching insurance isn't just a safety net; it's a cornerstone of a responsible and professional coaching practice. Don't let the unexpected set you back. Stay covered, stay confident. 🌟

We are excited to announce our second event of 2024! The Miramichi Equestrian Association will be hosting an english rider level prep course with Donna McInnis from Cap-Pele, NB!

Donna has been involved in the horse community her entire life. Having brought many students to the competition ring from the beginnings of Walk/Trot classes up to international competitions she offers a very well rounded insight of expectations from both the judge and the coach’s point of view. She is an NCCP certified Competition Coach Specialist for Dressage and a Western Competition Coach. She also holds her judges card for General Performance and Dressage and is a Coach Evaluator.

This unmounted course will cover all of the stable management and practical horsemanship components for level 1-4 English Equestrian Canada Learn to Ride levels and will include riding demonstrations of what is expected at each level.

Course Date: Saturday, May 11, 2024
Time: 10am – 4pm
Location: Oldfield Acres – 1995 Oldfield Road, Little Bartibog
Cost: $80 for members, $90 for non-members – fee due at time of reservation

We had a great day at Oldfield Acres yesterday! Thank you to everyone who participated in our western rider level prep course! We learned about all of the stable management components of the four western levels and watched demonstrations of lunging and of riders at each of the four levels. We'd like to thank our volunteers that did demos throughout the day! It was a great group of people with excellent discussions and a lot of laughs as well.

Would there be interest in a similar event for English riders in our region? Comment below or send us a message if you'd like to come to an English event like this!

FUN FACT FRIDAY! Are you familiar with the many adaptations that help your horse stay warm during the cold winter months?

🌾 Hindgut digestion of hay produces the most heat, acting as a small furnace inside of the horse. This is why free choice, good quality hay is so important in the winter.

💪 Horses have a huge muscle mass and muscle activity produces heat. This includes running and playing and even shivering if their body temperature starts to drop. It is important to remember that these activities also will result in a bigger caloric demand so free choice hay and in some cases, grain, is often needed.

🧥 To blanket or not to blanket is a constant debate but either way, as it starts to get cold your horse will grow a thicker coat. If you decide to leave your horse unblanketed you may notice that they look “fluffy”. This is due to a phenomenon called piloerection where the hair stands up to better trap air within. Two layers of the coat also help with warmth. The inner layer is softer and has air pockets to create an insulating layer. The outer layer is coarse and has oils that keep moisture from penetrating the insulating layer and keep the horse warm.

⚖️ Wild horses go into the winter heavier than ideal and the fat serves as an extra layer of insulation. However, if a horse is going to be kept heavily blanketed and in a barn during the cold weather months this is unnecessary and can lead to obesity related issues.

🦵Their distal limbs (below the knees and hocks) are made of mostly bones and tendons, tissues that are resistant to the cold temperatures.

🦶The hooves have an alternative route of blood circulation through larger vessels that can be used in low temperatures. This is why horses can stand in snow without detrimental effects.

👃A horse’s nose has a robust blood supply and is rounded so that it is less susceptible to frostbite than a human’s nose.

Attention, horse owners!

The first case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in New Brunswick was confirmed this afternoon.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) has been confirmed in Westmorland County, New Brunswick. On October 10, a 1 year old Quarter Horse filly was found down out in pasture with difficulty moving. Filly was euthanized on October 11. EEE was confirmed on October 18, 2023. The filly was unvaccinated for EEE.

Dr. Nicole Wanamaker, NB's chief veterinary officer and head of provincial field services, recommends that horses be vaccinated for EEE even though the vaccine will require 2 weeks to mount immunity and boosters will be required for those horses who have not been vaccinated before.

She also encourages owners to be vigilant as EEE does have public health implications (e.g. fever, chills, muscle or joint aches).

Please direct all questions to your veterinarian. This is all the information the NBEA has at this time.

Please share.

Horses travel every day for a number of reasons—to be bought and sold, for competition, for breeding purposes, etc. Whatever the reason, horse owners should be aware of the complications that may occur due to transportation, including traumatic injuries, diarrhea, muscular problems, respiratory problems, overheating, colic, and even laminitis (in the case of overweight horses).

Following are a few tips to help your equine friend maintain good health and welfare during transport. This list is by no means complete and we encourage you to reach out to your veterinarian for additional advice when it comes to traveling with your horse!

• Be aware that inadequate management of feed and water intake during travel could cause colic, gastric ulceration and heat stress. Food and water should be provided prior to transport, during regular rest breaks and upon arrival at destination.

• Ensure your horse’s immunizations are up to date against respiratory pathogens to protect your animal from these diseases.

• The horse should be rested before the journey, given rest stops during travel, and have time to recover on arrival at the destination.

• The vehicle should be well-ventilated to help prevent respiratory problems or overheating.

• Drive slowly and carefully (NO TEXTING, avoid driving when fatigued or eating while driving, etc.) to provide a comfortable journey for the animal and reduce the risk of injury and fatigue.

Happy trails!

Just some information about your NBEA insurance coverage for anyone assisting evacuated horses.

With wildfires burning in several areas throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, we want to remind members of Equestrian Nova Scotia and New Brunswick Equestrian Association about the automatic insurance included with your membership. This coverage protects you for liability arising from the temporary care, custody and control of up to three non-owned horses that have been displaced due to fire, flood and other natural disasters.

We also want to extend a huge THANK YOU to those that are lending a hand to horse owners who need help relocating their horses to safety.

If you have questions about your insurance coverage, contact your Acera Insurance equine specialists at 1-888-394-3330, or email [email protected] to register for the June 7th webinar with Acera rep Charity Tetrault. She'll be answering all our equine insurance-related questions.
