“My Dexter was a dog of a lifetime. He taught me so much about resilience, hope, trust and faith. At just eight months old he had the first surgery to fix his elbows. It was followed, over the next few months, with several more as time and again he had major setbacks. Each time it was the choice of fix it, or call it a day.
Each time, despite his pain, Dexter would look right at me, with sheer determination in his eyes. You fix it Mum, and I'll get better. So that's what we did.
He became a regular patient for many years. When he was at the beginning, it was doubtful that he would even see his first birthday. He proved all of us wrong. He got many, many miles out of his metal hip, his numerous plates, screws and wires, and we said goodbye at the grand age of 11 years.
It'll be four years in June since I held his head as he fell asleep for the last time. It took me three of those years to even consider getting another. We thankfully had our wonderful Diesel dog, with his ever-wagging tail.
Last year, I fell head over heels with a little bundle once more. My wonderful Daddy was very ill at the time, but when he saw her newborn photos he lit up and fell in love with her too. Dad left us soon afterward. That puppy, my Delta, has no idea just how special she is. How much healing she does on a daily basis. She was my Dad's last gift, and she is just so very, very loved.
Thank you Dexter, for teaching me so much. For being my loyal, gentle giant. For never doubting we were doing the right thing. You were, quite simply, the best boy.
Thank you Delta, for making Dad smile through the rain. For making us all smile through the tears. For slowly putting my shattered heart together again, piece by piece, day by day. It's a slow process, but your love is endless and unconditional.
Thank you Diesel, for being the constant in these years of turmoil. Always there, always giving so much love, so gently.
Where would we be without them eh? We are, as human beings, so very, very blessed.”
Thank you Sarah for sharing the story of your special family. I couldn't say it better, what would we be without them? They enrich our world with their infinite wisdom and love. x
