Lots of you may remember lovely Ruby from The Supervet, when four years ago an accident left her with many pelvic and spinal fractures. She was incredibly lucky to make it. We operated on her again this week to stop her being paralysed from an exploded disc in her spine, which unfortunately is a common problem in dachsies. Always lovely to have post op cuddles, she is a special one for sure. Now to continue her recovery x

Stanley has had a long and sometimes difficult journey, but his resilience and unending enthusiasm for life is infectious. Many of my patients share this quality - I am so lucky to do what I do and be surrounded by so many wonderful and inspirational animals every day x

Since joining us 10 years ago on a surgical internship, James has thrived through all his subsequent steps in his career, to become a Diplomat in Small Animal Surgery (Orthopaedics, Soft Tissue & Neurosurgery) in 2018 and a Diplomat in Canine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation with both European and American colleges in 2022.

We are incredibly proud of you James and thank you for your incredible contributions to our team as a mentor, surgeon and colleague! 🎉⭐️

Lovely Fuzz was chasing a ball when she accidentally ran into a post, exploding a disc in her spine. We performed surgery to remove the disc material and now Fuzz is continuing her rehabilitation at home. It may sound scary to hear as a guardian that your friend has an exploded disc, but don’t panic, the surgery is often quick and recovery is good. She will be running in no time. Now Fuzz is home to continue to build her strength. See you soon Fuzz x

“My husband and I adopted a Westie, when my husband was diagnosed with IPF. Robbie was 11 and had skin issues; his previous family couldn’t care for him. At the time I was reluctant to get a dog but I thought it would be company for my husband when I was at work. My husband loved him to bits. When I would leave for work Robbie would be cuddled in with him. Sadly my husband passed 7 months after we adopted Robbie.

Robbie became the reason that I had to get up every morning, he needed to be fed. I would have to go out to walk him and eventually, I would take him places that I had gone with my husband, facing the loss, starting the healing. Having Robbie by my side gave me the strength to do this.

Like many, Lockdown was so hard for me but Robbie was by my side and again I had no choice but to get up every morning and go out with him.

Robbie is now 18 and has been diagnosed with IPF/ Westie lung, it is now my turn to care for him. Walks are slow and short but I bought a buggy for him, so we can still go for long walks together. Despite all this, he has a good quality of life pottering about the garden and house, and loves his food. I take each day as it comes, making the most of the time we have together, and don’t look too far into the future.”

Our animal family members chart our ups and downs through life and provide light when otherwise there would be dark. Hold on to each other close and live and love each day. Big hugs Anne. Thanks for sharing your story x

“My Dexter was a dog of a lifetime. He taught me so much about resilience, hope, trust and faith. At just eight months old he had the first surgery to fix his elbows. It was followed, over the next few months, with several more as time and again he had major setbacks. Each time it was the choice of fix it, or call it a day.

Each time, despite his pain, Dexter would look right at me, with sheer determination in his eyes. You fix it Mum, and I'll get better. So that's what we did.

He became a regular patient for many years. When he was at the beginning, it was doubtful that he would even see his first birthday. He proved all of us wrong. He got many, many miles out of his metal hip, his numerous plates, screws and wires, and we said goodbye at the grand age of 11 years.

It'll be four years in June since I held his head as he fell asleep for the last time. It took me three of those years to even consider getting another. We thankfully had our wonderful Diesel dog, with his ever-wagging tail.

Last year, I fell head over heels with a little bundle once more. My wonderful Daddy was very ill at the time, but when he saw her newborn photos he lit up and fell in love with her too. Dad left us soon afterward. That puppy, my Delta, has no idea just how special she is. How much healing she does on a daily basis. She was my Dad's last gift, and she is just so very, very loved.

Thank you Dexter, for teaching me so much. For being my loyal, gentle giant. For never doubting we were doing the right thing. You were, quite simply, the best boy.

Thank you Delta, for making Dad smile through the rain. For making us all smile through the tears. For slowly putting my shattered heart together again, piece by piece, day by day. It's a slow process, but your love is endless and unconditional.

Thank you Diesel, for being the constant in these years of turmoil. Always there, always giving so much love, so gently.

Where would we be without them eh? We are, as human beings, so very, very blessed.”

Thank you Sarah for sharing the story of your special family. I couldn't say it better, what would we be without them? They enrich our world with their infinite wisdom and love. x

“That dog. He's not just that dog. He's the dog that is my best friend and my soul mate. He's not just that dog. He's the dog that has given me unconditional love, laughter, loyalty, friendship, and joy. He's not just that dog. He's the dog that I have such a strong bond with. He's not just that dog. He's the dog that comforts and soothes me when I'm sad and anxious. He's not just that dog; he is Buddy, and he chose me to be his special friend, and I will be forever grateful that he chose me to be in his life.”

Never just a dog. Our animal friends do not judge, and their love is infinite and unconditional. Thanks for sharing this Charlotte. N x
