What Happens If You Don't Train Your Dog?

When you are thinking of getting a dog, it’s important to look past the cuteness factor and consider the amount of work that goes into having them around. While they become a big part of the family, it is important, as a responsible pet owner, to consider dog training. Not only will this establish a strong bond between you and your furry friend, but it will also ensure their safety and the well-being of your household.

If you choose not to train your dog, it can lead to undesirable consequences including:

Safety Concerns- An untrained dog poses potential safety risks as they may not respond to typical commands like sit, stay, and down. This can cause dangerous situations and unpredictable encounters. Dog training helps decrease these risks.

Behavior Issues- Not training your dog can cause behavioral issues such as excessive barking, chewing furniture, jumping on people, aggression, or even separation anxiety. These behaviors may strain your relationship with your dog.

Strained Relationships- Relationships will not only be strained between you and your dog, but also with other family members, friends, and neighbors. The unruly behavior of your dog might make it hard to have visitors or cause issues with your neighbors. Dog training will create a positive environment for everyone.

Boundaries- Dog training helps establish clear boundaries which helps your dog understand what is expected of them. Without training, they may struggle to understand your commands.

Therapy Dog Controlled Evaluation Class
If your dog has passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen test and you are interested in training your dog to become a Therapy Dog, please let me know in the comments below or by email. We are thinking about offering a Therapy Dog class for the Controlled Evaluation (Part One) in May. If you pass this class, you would still need to complete the Supervised Visits second part of the certification process. If you haven’t taken a class yet for the AKC CGC register for our class that begins on March 6.

Becoming a Therapy Dog
There are two parts to becoming a Therapy Dog with Love on a Leash. First, there is a Control Evaluation which assesses control of the dog and skills (attached). The second part consists of successfully completing 10 Supervised Visits with another therapy dog team.

If you are interested in your dog developing some advanced skills, I would highly recommend taking the AKC CGC Class (and Test) that we will be offering on the Thursday evenings in March from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm. While the AKC CGC class does not certify your dog as a therapy dog, it does certify dogs that pass as “AKC Canine Good Citizens” and give you an opportunity to work on skills expected by therapy dogs.
