Fellow northern gardeners know the next best season to spring is winter, as we get to plan out next years’ garden. While we plan out our garden beds and blooms, we are also weighing out our growing medium options.

The mining of peat bogs has consistently shown major negative impacts of the already fragile ecosystem. Studies have shown that the use of Spent Mushroom Compost, the the growing medium left after mushrooms have been harvested, is shown to be a viable alternative to peat moss when casing gardens. Especially in container gardening.

How we help keep resources from entering landfills with the help of our partners.

This bucket is how we get our coffee grounds for our fruiting substrate! The , collects fresh coffee grounds from east end cafes and delivers them to be processed and sterilization by us . We process the coffee grounds by first drying them out. Once dried we rehydrate the coffee to exact measurements and sterilize with high temperature and pressure. This makes them ready and safe for our mushrooms to thrive!

Once the mushrooms have been harvested the Worm Return comes back and takes the spent substrate to recycle it a second time with their worms and composting sites!

Can you imagine? Something that is tossed out in large quantities everyday, everywhere can be used not once, but twice in the cycle of food production?? Atleast we are pretty geeked about it ❤️🍄🪱

The mycelium network, the threadlike extensions of fungi normally unseen. What you see is the fruit of the mushroom standing alone or in small clusters .But they aren’t alone, and they are more than a small cluster. They are apart of massive network, interconnecting themselves and nature. Just like mushrooms we may appear as individuals but unseen we are all one ❤️🍄
