I havent done this walk since I took Eddie, its always weird when I do a walk for the first time since I lost him even though its been a while. I usually enjoy the sounds of nature, everything being so quiet I can hear a deer snapping branches in the woods. Its not like that down here, the m4 brings a constant stream of cars and its less enjoyable. So, I did what I usually hate doing and stuck my headphones in and enjoyed my walk slightly different to usual.

Today was an exciting adventure—my first time paddleboarding! I've decided to embrace a new mindset of saying "yes" more often. For a long time, I tended to overthink things and talked myself out of new experiences, potentially missing out on a lot of fun.

Change isn't always easy. It takes time, practice, and patience, whether we're talking about ourselves or our furry friends. Just like with dogs, sometimes we need a few calm days to adapt and grow.

Here's to new beginnings and the joy of stepping out of our comfort zones! What’s something new you’ve said “yes” to recently?

The little feral kitten who hissed and wanted to hide away came home with me 7 years ago. It didn't take long for him to grow in confidence and warm up to me and now he's turned into a big old lap cat. He's still nervous of strangers but thats ok, I always say he's fine as long as he's with me and I really do mean that. He's stayed at Airbnbs with me, moved houses a few times and took it all in his stride. Happy 7 years Simba

I've officially been vegan for half of my life. I believe in trying to be the most compassionate person I can be and that goes for both my training methods, and the impact my other choices have on animals and the environment. When I first went vegan the cheese available was disgusting, and I was lucky to get tomato pasta if I went out for food. Now I can go to vegan only restaurants and cafes and even go to the supermarket and buy myself way too much cake and chocolate! Even having a minimal diet of banana cake, pasta and beans as a teenager was in my mind the better option than consuming animal products.

With the rescue due to close their doors soon its just this lovely fella left looking for his forever home. He does have another rescue lined up but he definitely deserves to go to a loving home instead.

Despite the fact that this is likely to embarass me I thought it a good video to highlight the fact that when we learn a new skill we need to start right at the begining, move forward in small steps and keep our expectations realistic.
This is the second time I've put on skates and I'm still learning about being mindful of how I need to shift my weight amd keeping my head up and knees bent. I certainly didn't think I'd be putting skates on and whizzing around doing tricks.
When we teach our dogs a new skill we often think about the end goal, but instead we should split it into smaller components, train those separately and then piece it together. We can keep our expectations realistic. If I teach my dog to recall in the garden, I dont expect him to recall from really far away in the fields straight away - we need to keep practising and build up to that.
So, next time you are feeling a bit frustrated with your training - think about how you can make it easier for you and your dog. And maybe visualise yourself learning a new skill and how difficult that may be.

I am now able to offer remote behaviour consultations to anyone who may be struggling with their dog.
But why choose a remote consultations?

1. Convenience - there's no need to travel and you and your pup can stay at home which is great for those that don't like to travel or get travel sick.

2. Familiar Environment - your dog can stay in the place they feel safe which means I get to see their true personality and give more accurate assessments and advice.

3. Cost - without the travel expense remote consultations can often be a more cost effective way of getting the help you need.

4. Less Stress - there's no need for dogs that are fearful or nervous of strangers and new environments to worry.

5. Flexibility - if you're busy juggling work, pets and children then we can find a time that fits your schedule.

And there's so many more benefits so feel free to comment below or send me a message and I'll get back to you to see how I can help you and your beloved pet.
These consultations are currently on a limited time offer whilst I build a portfolio, so please get in touch now especially if you are on a budget.

Let's talk dog shows! Now, I'm going to hold my hands up and admit to taking Eddie to a few dog shows in my time with him. He won a few rosettes for handsome dog and waggiest tail, I never hung around for sausage catcher but I know that was his speciality. For some dogs these fun shows can be just that - good fun. Dogs that are happy being around humans, kids, dogs etc., If they are happy in busier environments it's a nice time to remind them how well they are doing with lots of their favourite treats. Give them space away from it periodically so they can have a sniff and go to the toilet in peace and maybe just sit and watch from the sidelines so we don't overwhelm them all day. After all, dogs do need their sleep and rest.

However, some dogs do struggle and even if they aren't barking or lunging can still be a little stressed. You might see the whites of their eyes, their ears might be pinned back with a low tail and if they are panting with tight lips and a furrowed brow its best to take them home and have a look at some of the online dog shows you can enter by submitting a photo, I love this idea as it means our less confident dogs still get to show of their gorgeous faces.

Remember if you are taking your dog because they are comfortable in the environment, some owners are unable to pick up on the fact their dog might be stressed, so reduce the on lead hellos with unfamiliar dogs and give enough distance. I made this mistake once and Eddie ended up being bitten on the nose - luckily it was only a chihuahua (yes the owner thought it was funny 🙄) but Eddie just went behind me. We've also been lunged at by a poor puppy on a prong collar who was not coping and learning that there was no escape.

As an extra bonus, if you've read this far comment with the picture of your dog you would use for an online photo competition (sorry - no prizes this time)

Todays adventure took me to London - typically the underground I needed was cancelled so off I walked for 2 hours around London. Took the tourist route back and snapped some photos.

I saw a lot of dogs on my adventure today and it didn't really change my opinion that dogs are mostly not suited too well to big citys. From the outside they all looked very well behaved - walking nicely on a lead, standing around when people wanted to stop and chat. However, I saw a lot of subtle signs that all of the dogs were actually stressed. Maybe living in a state of stress and knowing there is no escape so the easiest option is just to "go along with it." The parks are a great green space for dogs but they are so busy so its easier to keep them distracted with a game of fetch. I wonder how often these city dogs get to be an actual dog.

So for those that don't know, today starts the first day of the next chapter in my life. I am moving away from Telford back to where I grew up. However, this isn't my final destination so more news will follow hopefully soon!
I've had a wonderful time getting to know some amazing dogs and people whilst I've been in Telford. It is sad to say goodbye to the pups and to their families that have supported me and trusted me throughout the years but sometimes life throws out opportunities that you have to at least try out.
I will still be continuing to work with dogs and will turn to online dog training which is perfect for more nervous dogs, pre vaccination puppies and to be honest - all dogs!
I will also be looking to train some dogs that find themselves in rescue to get them ready for a new home and to highlight them and show off how wonderful they all can be.
I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported my little business, trusted me and worked alongside me to train and enhance animal's lives through ethical ways.

How FeatherPaws came to be.

I’ve always loved animals and knew I needed a career around them. Growing up there was always animals of some sort in the house. From the day I was born there was Fatty and Skinny our two black cats. Then me and my sisters each looked after our own rabbit, mine was Cuddles, because what else do you name your rabbit when you’re 8!? There was also pet rats and mice at various times too.

Then as my sisters moved out and the house became emptier and emptier I found a love for ex-racing Greyhounds! Volunteering at the kennels and walking the dogs was an amazing way to spend a day. One of the Greyhounds particularly caught my eye, Button. He’d jump up at the stable door as if to say “pick me.” Well, I did. It took more for me to persuade my dad then my mum but it was worth it.

Our first family dog - a tall, skinny legged, rather goofy looking black greyhound with half a tail missing - Perfect! We would go on adventures together me; driving my VW Beetle with a gangly-legged Button in the back and I loved him so much.

Next was the big move away from home to university. Unfortunately it just wasn’t fair of me to bring Button with me - he was older and needed company throughout the day. During my studies I fell in love with a local rescue centre - Hilbrae. I spent afternoons there walking the dogs and trying to get them out the kennels. Then I managed to bag myself a job there - what an experience!
