Before getting a Cane Corso puppy - do your research!
The Cane Corso is not a breed for everyone. Before committing to a puppy make sure that:

1. You have interacted with the breed personally.

2. Visited several breeders to check their facilities and dogs.

3. Have enough time to invest in the training and the socialization of your puppy.

Reading about the breed is a good start. But, not enough. You must experience the breed before getting a puppy.

The history of the Cane Legionarius Cane Corso Kennel

Historical milestones:

1957: Professor Giovanni Bonatti publishes the first article that mentioned the need to save the Cane Corso breed.

1970's: The recovery of the Cane Corso breed begins.

1980: Public interest in the breed strengthen the the recovery process.

1983: The SACC - The Society Amatori Cane Corso, is formed by Dr. Breber and five others. The breed standard is published in Dr. Giovanni Ventura book -"Il Cano Corso".

1984: The SACC contacts ENCI to start the process of recognizing the Cane Corso as a breed.

1986: ENCI assigns Dr. Antonio Morsiani to draft a standard for the Cane Corso.

Based on the evaluation of about 90 Corsos, Basir and his sister were used as the male and female prototypes for the standard.

1987: The official standard of the Cane Corso is approved by ENCI.

1988: A survey was done on more than 50 Corsos from several different locations throughout Italy to compare their resemblance to the newly proposed standard. ENCI was then presented with the results.

USA 1988: Mike Sottile Sr. (a Neapolitan Mastiff breeder from the US) imports a litter of 6 pups from a farmer in Sicily that he calls the rare "Sicilian Branchiero". Later that same year, he drafts his own breed standard for the Sicilian Branchiero and registers all his imports with his privately owned registry - FIC (Federation of International Canines).

1990: ENCI allows Open Book Certification for adults that are consistent with the standard. A total of 561 Cane Corsos were certified by ENCI approved judges. In order to be approved, the dogs had to be inspected by two ENCI certified judges. Pups born from two certified parents were eligible for registration in Open Book as well as any offspring born from these dogs.

1988 - 1990: Mike Sottile Sr. continues to import Sicilian Branchieros. Somewhere within these years, the name of the dogs he imported and registered as Sicilian Branchiero was changed to Cane Corso.

1992/1993: Mark & Tracy Wilson and Ed & Kristie Hodas (Belmonte Kennels) form the International Cane Corso Federation in the United States. The Wilsons and The Hodas' open and incorporate a privately owned, for profit, registry for the Cane Corso named the ICCF Registry.

1994: ENCI recognizes the Cane Corso as the 14th Italian breed.1994: Nancy Sottile, ex-wife of Mike Sottile Sr., took over the FIC registry.

1995: Mark Wilson & others travel to Italy on several occasions. During one trip to Italy, Mark Wilson meets with S.A.C.C. in an attempt to obtain recognition for the ICCF as the approved American breed club.

1996: The Cane Corso is presented to FCI and is recognized on an international level. (Please note that FCI is an internationally known registry while FIC is a privately owned registry in the U.S.).

Late 1995-1996: Mark Wilson leaves the ICCF for personal reasons. The ICCF club and registry are separated. The Hodas' (Bel Monte) take ownership over the ICCF Registry.

1997: SACC sends a letter to ICCF stating they have no interest in recognizing the ICCF as the American breed club for the Cane Corso due to failures to meet SACC requirements.

1999: ENCI removes SACC as the official breed club for the Cane Corso. To date, there is no officially recognized breed club for the Cane Corso in Italy.

2000: ICCF revised its standard to more closely resemble that of the FCI standard for the Cane Corso Italiano.

2003/2004: ENCI turns down the AICC and once again recognizes SACC as the official breed club for the Cane Corso

2010: AKC recognizes the Cane Corso.

July 2015: AKC no longer accepts ICCF registered Cane Corso.

Temperament

When evaluating the Cane Corso, character must also come into the equation. The Cane Corso should never be fearful. If a Corso is afraid, how can he effectively perform his duties as a guard dog? Timid character should be severely faulted.

This breed’s history predicates a somewhat belligerent attitude toward other dogs, particularly dogs of the same s*x, so a Cane Corso that shows this should not be faulted (as long as he poses no threat to others). He should never be overly agitated or fidgety; he is always reserved and confident. The Cane Corso should be territorial; he should be in tune and aware of his surroundings and show a keen interest in them. The Cane Corso should never be afraid to meet any challenge.

Do not mistake indifference or standoffish behavior with fear or aggression. Most Cane Corsos are not likely to look at you and wag their tail; some, yes, but in most cases this will not be so. He should not be outwardly aggressive toward you; he must be under control at all times. The Cane Corso should be a very balanced animal mentally as well as physically; he should be confident, secure, and vigilant. The firmness of his nerves represents the true mental strength of the breed.

The Cane Corso should be like furniture; meaning he is just there. He is not acting aggressively, posing threat for no reason. He is not shy or hiding behind his owner’s leg. He’s just there, ready to act if necessary, and with only the appropriate level of deterrent. This breed has a profound attachment to his owners; they are his sun and moon. He suffers if left alone or stuck in a yard; he needs social interaction with his family.

DOG PARKS & why we do NOT recommend taking your Corso puppy to one and how they can potentially create behavioral issues in your pups later.

Due to the following reasons, it can lead to various issues and potential behavioral problems later:

1. Overwhelm and fear: Puppies may get overwhelmed and frightened by the presence of multiple unfamiliar dogs, leading to stress and anxiety.

2. Aggression and bullying: Unstructured play with stranger dogs can result in aggressive behavior and potential bullying, especially for a large and strong breed like the Corso.

3. Injury risk: Young puppies are more vulnerable to injuries during rough play or accidents with larger, more boisterous dogs.

4. Disease transmission: Dog parks can be breeding grounds for contagious diseases, exposing your puppy to potential illnesses like parvovirus or kennel cough.

5. Unpredictable dog behavior: You can't control the behavior of other dogs at the park, and a negative encounter may negatively impact your puppy's socialization.

6. Negative reinforcement: If your puppy exhibits fear or anxiety, the dog park experience can reinforce those negative emotions in future social situations.

Instead, consider these alternative activities for your puppy's long-term well-being:

1. Puppy socialization classes: Controlled environments with trained professionals can provide positive socialization experiences.

2. Playdates with known dogs: Arrange playdates with well-behaved and friendly dogs that you know, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.

3. Leashed walks: Take your puppy on leashed walks in quiet areas, allowing controlled exposure to various sights, sounds, and people.

4. Obedience training: Engage in regular obedience training to build a strong bond with your puppy and improve their behavior.

5. Interactive toys and puzzles: Use interactive toys and puzzles to keep your puppy mentally stimulated and entertained.

6. Supervised meetups: Organize meetups with other responsible puppy owners to have controlled play sessions with puppies of similar age and size.

Remember, this is a brief overview to help you understand the logistics of this commonly used concept that owners are unfamiliar with and to help teach you how to provide positive and structured experiences for your Corso puppy, promoting good behavior and socialization skills in a safe environment which has a HUGE effect on how your Corso puppy turns out as an adult!

LITTER MATE SYNDROME IN CANE CORSO PUPPIES: Understanding and Preventing Behavioral Issues in puppies when 2 or more are raised together from a young age.

Introduction:
This post is to help NEW owners in general to understand their puppies behaviors and get insight into what it takes to raise multiple puppies together PROPERLY and SUCCESSFULLY to prevent POTENTIAL behavioral issues later.

Bringing home two Cane Corso puppies can be an exciting and joyful experience for an experienced owner. However, it's important to be aware that the owner needs to commit to invest ALOT of time into training these puppies for the first 3 years to set the foundation for a well behaved companion..

If the owners fail to provide the appropriate lifestyle for these puppies then they run a chance of creating of a phenomenon known as "Litter Mate Syndrome."

Litter Mate Syndrome refers to the potential behavioral issues that CAN arise when two puppies from the same litter ( or similar age) are raised together without proper socialization and individual training.

We will explain Litter Mate Syndrome and provide practical tips to prevent behavioral problems in Cane Corso puppies for new owners.

Understanding Litter Mate Syndrome:

1. Litter Mate Syndrome occurs when two puppies from the same litter ( or even 2 pups the similar age from different litters ) become overly dependent on each other and fail to develop independent identities. This is typically due to the owners not incorporating the proper environment and structured training routine within the dynamics of the pack & home.
2. Puppies experiencing Litter Mate Syndrome may have difficulty forming relationships with humans and other dogs, resulting in behavioral issues as they mature into adulthood.
3. The lack of individual attention and socialization can lead to separation anxiety, aggression, and an increased risk of developing behavioral problems.

Preventing Litter Mate Syndrome:
1. Separate Training Sessions: Schedule regular individual training sessions with each puppy to establish a bond and foster their unique identities. This allows you to address their specific needs and provide individual attention.
2. Socialization with Other Dogs: Encourage interactions with well-behaved, vaccinated dogs of different ages and breeds. This helps the puppies learn appropriate social skills and reduces their reliance on each other for socialization.
3. One-on-One Time: Spend quality time with each puppy individually to strengthen the human-puppy bond. Engage in activities such as walks, playtime, and training exercises to build trust and reinforce positive behavior.
4. Independent Crate Training: Crate train each puppy separately to help them become comfortable being alone. Gradually increase the time spent in separate crates to prevent separation anxiety.
5. Individual Walks: Take each puppy on separate walks to expose them to different environments, sounds, and sights. This helps them develop confidence and adaptability on their own.
6. Training Classes: Enroll each puppy in separate obedience classes or hire a professional trainer to provide structured training sessions. This allows them to learn commands and behavior skills independently.
7. Encourage Individual Experiences: Provide opportunities for each puppy to engage in activities apart from their littermate. This can include supervised playdates with other dogs or separate outings to different environments.
8. Consistent House Rules: Establish consistent rules and boundaries for both puppies, ensuring they learn to respect and follow commands from each family member. Reinforce positive behavior and discourage negative behavior consistently.

If your serious about wanting to get 2 puppies then its best to get 1 and focus on training them and getting their basic obedience with a solid reliable recall perfected! Then you can get a second puppy, but be sure to individualize their training, focus on bonding with each one separately & teaching boundaries.

Conclusion:
While raising two Cane Corso puppies from the same litter can be a rewarding experience, it's essential to understand and prevent Litter Mate Syndrome. By implementing the tips mentioned above, new owners can create a healthy balance between their puppies' bond and their individual development.

Remember, proper socialization, individual training, and quality time with each puppy will help prevent potential behavioral issues and foster a harmonious relationship between the dogs and their owners in the long run.
