‼️ For those of you who don’t know ‼️

My Sister and I have entered into the “World’s Toughest Row“ in 2026, where we will attempt to row 3000 miles unaided across the Atlantic Ocean 🌊 Our team name is ‘One Row Live It’ (inspiration from a saying we live by - One Life Live It). Our logo uses my Horseshoe I designed for my Farriery Logo, because we both have a strong equestrian background and that is what unites us together 💪🏻 .toughest.row

Farriers don’t ever want a horse to loose a shoe, but to provide the correct support for the equines foot, it means the shoe has to over hang the foot to compensate for the foot growth 🔥

Only 6 / 7 nails hold the shoe on the foot. Yet the sheer power a horses has can bend their shoes dramatically like this…. 💪🏻 Have you ever tried to bend a shoe this much, cold? Have you ever tried to take a shoe off a horses foot? 😮‍💨

It is absolutely astonishing how these tiny nails can hold the shoe on tight enough to allow for this to happen. If they were weak, the shoe would come off flat…. It’s just a thought the next time your horse looses a shoe, it takes some effort!!

For the want of a nail the shoe was lost
For the want of a shoe the horse was lost
For the want of a horse the rider was lost
For the want of a rider the battle was lost
For the want of a battle the kingdom was lost
And all for the want of a horseshoe-nail.

Not my photo, but worth re sharing!

Lost shoes need to be found!

If your horse stands on anything sharp such as glass / wood or rusty nails, they can pierce the sole of the foot and potentially cause serious damage to important structures such as the…

1. Distal Phalanx (Pedal Bone)
2. Distal Sesamoid (Navicular) Bone
3. Podotrochlear (Navicular) Bursa
4. Deep Digital Flexor Tendon
5. Distal Impar Ligament
6. Distal Inter-phalangeal Articulation (Coffin Joint)

…. And many more!! If these structures are seriously damage the prognosis could be fatal. Especially if a rusty nail causes Equine Tetanus! 🐎

🔥 Fun Fact Friday 🔥

Horses are mammals just like us and therefore are very similar in many ways, they have roughly the same amount of bones in their skeleton as a human does, just a lot bigger and stronger! 💪🏻

Did you know that a Horse has approximately 205 bones in their skeleton compared to a Human skeleton that has approximately 206!? 😲

List of the Bones in the Equine Skeleton 💀 -

- Limbs - 20 in each (80 total)
- Sternum - 1
- Ribs - 36
- Skull - 34
- Vertebrae - 54 approximately (7 Cervical / 18 Thoracic / 6 Lumbar / 5 Sacral / 18-21 Coccygeal)

It is surprising to think that a Horse has a similar amount of bones as a human, especially when you think how much bigger they are! 🥴

💨 Short & Smoky 💨

Burning a Shoe on, not much difference between Cold ❄️ & Hot 🔥 Shoeing, apart from the temperature. The main advantage of Hot Shoeing is it’s easier for the Farrier to shape the shoe, but it also creates a better congruence between the Foot & Shoe 👠👍🏻

Cold Shoeing is still just as good as Hot Shoeing and is actually a better option for some situations…. Eg…. Young Horses, Dry Feet, Hot Weather, Impatient Horses…. Etc The list goes on 🐎 🐎🐎

So don’t be fooled when someone says that Cold / Hot Shoeing is no good….. Listen to the advice of your Farrier! We do 5/6 years training so we can provide the best services for your equines welfare 💪🏻🐎👍🏻😃

This is a very simplified post, As always, there are many other factors which contribute to why a Farrier will Shoe your horse Hot or Cold ❄️🔥❄️🔥

🔥🤷‍♂️ Foot Shape & Support 🤷‍♂️🔥

I realise that it is difficult for non Farriers to see how we are fitting the shoes to feet for support. So I have taken some photographs of the Trimmed Feet, then the Finished Shod Feet, and I have managed to merge them together in a short video (attached below), so you can see…

- 🐴 Where the Shoe is located in relation to the foot.
- 🐴 How the Shoe provides support around the foot (just like our own shoes)
- 🐴 Why shoes are not always perfectly round, because the horses foot dictates how a Shoe should be shaped, not the Farrier.
- 🐴 How the Shoe can encourage a more rounder, flowing shape to an oddly shaped foot, providing better weight distribution & less concussions.

Here is a new Horse I Shod today, upon my first examination of this horses front feet, I found that her Medio-lateral foot balance was not level, she was very high on both outside branches 🥴

As you can clearly see her feet are not the “ideal” shape that we all hope our Horses feet can / could or will be. They are not round, symmetrical, and the hoof wall starts to thin more quickly than in most horses, around the quarters & heel. BUT, she is sound and comfortable on them, so I am going to Keep It Simple and not re invent the wheel 👌🏻🔥

My objective is to….

🔥 Regain & maintain Medio-Lateral foot balance - I have done this by using a tool called a ‘T Square’. This tool allows me to see where her true balance is, perpendicular to the axis of the limb / tendons (where most of the body weight is transferred down through the limb / foot). This allows the foot to land level and distribute weight evenly across the foot & limb. Preventing any abnormal loading of the foot & limb which could cause serious complications further on in life ✅

🔥 Provide Support to the hoof wall - As you can see in the photographs, she has a nice round flowing shape to her outside branch of the foot, however, her inside branch on both front feet are very ‘tight’ and very straight in shape. You can clearly see that the inside branch’s of her feet are a lot weaker and thinner compared to that of the outside branches. This is most likely due to her bearing uneven weight across the foot, which has caused undue stresses, therefore the foot has tried to adapt its shape. ❓❓🔶🟠🟧❓❓

🔥⚒️ I have fitted shoes which provide support all the way around the foot, mainly focusing on the medial branches. This will help to distribute weight and concussion more evenly across the Hoof Wall, the foot and the limb ✅ I will continue to provide this support with the Shoes, and hopefully the foot will gradually start to migrate outwards to where the shoe is fitted and we will see a Stronger Hoof Wall and Hoof Shape for this lovely horse 🔨🔥

The shape created where the White Line meets the Sole of the foot, is a mirror image of the Solar Surface of the Distal Phalanx (aka Pedal Bone). Looking at this shape of this horses feet, I can clearly see that her natural “ideal” foot shape is going to be slightly straighter and tighter (mainly medially) than most horses. So it is important for me to work with this shape and not to try and create an “ideal” text book foot shape 📖

Again this is a very simplified explanation of very basic Farriery 🧐 There are so many more factors that affect Horses, their Feet, their Foot Shape and how they are Shod 🐎🔥

🐎👠 All Horses and their feet must be treated as individuals 👠🐎

Thank You for taking the time to read this long post,

💅 Nail Hole Placement 💅

As Farriers, we try to promote a symmetrical shaped Hoof / Shoe to help the loading & the concussion to disperse evenly across the foot & limb.

This is not always possible. So regardless of the foot shape, we fit a shoe (If Shod) with some support, whilst trying to create as near a symmetrical shape as we can.

However, what most people don’t know is the biggest thing for us, is “Nail Hole Placement”‼️

We must place our nail holes to the outside of the “White Line” to ensure that the nails go into the non-sensitive Hoof Wall ✅

If the nail holes are to the inside of the “White Line” we must NOT use them ❌ The structures within this area have blood & nerve vessels (aka, sensitive structures) 🩸
🥴 Not much room for errors 🤯

As you can see in the diagrams...

🟡 Yellow Line - shows the structure know as the “White Line” (A junction between the sensitive and insensitive foot)

🟢 Green Circles - show the nail holes which can be used.

🔴 Red Circles - show the nail holes which can NOT be used.

🔥 Please Note that this is again a very basic explanation, there are many many more factors which have to taken into consideration before shaping & nailing a shoe onto a horse 🔥

🔥 Sidebone 🔥

This horse has a condition known as ‘Uni-Lateral Sidebone’.

There are two types of Sidebone...
- Uni - Lateral Sidebone ~ This is the ossification of ONLY the Lateral Cartilage of the Distal Phalanx.
- Bi - Lateral (Bi - Axial) Sidebone ~ This is the ossification of BOTH Medial and Lateral Cartilages of the Distal Phalanx.

I have ...
- Used a wide webbed shoe to help disperse concussion across the foot.
- I have ‘rounded’ all of the Lateral Branch of the shoe and rasped the nail heads flush with the shoe.
- Located the nails in the Lateral Branch towards the toe and away from the heels.

By rounding off the edge of the shoe and making the nails flush with the shoe, this mimics the natural wear patter of a horse with Uni - Lateral Sidebone and therefore helps the foot to slide with more ease and reduces the jarring / concussion through the foot 👍🏻

The ossification of the lateral cartilage makes the lateral branch more ridged and less flexible, therefore increasing concussion 🤕 So by locating the nails further away from the lateral heel, this help prevent the foot from becoming even more ridged and helps to allow the heel of the foot to expand and contract more naturally with more ease, when weight bearing 😃

Sidebone is a non - reversible condition which can not be fixed. So it is our job as a Farrier to help support and provide comfort to these horses ✅

🔥This horse is sound and comfortable all thanks to the good work from ‘Jasmine Hyslop DipWCF’, who is a friend and fellow Farrier. I am currently covering some of her work whilst she is off on maternity leave. I am merely continuing the work that Jasmine has done 🔥

Hoof Cracks

With no signs or symptoms, here is a Hoof Crack that appeared within just one day on “King”, who turned 4yo yesterday 🎂 he has NEVER had shoes on before! He is sound and is in no pain when palpated.

This Hoof Crack is just superficial. The underlying Hoof Wall is still very much intact and strong along with the Lateral Heel 💪🏻✅

I removed the excess hoof to prevent it from being ripped off and potentially causing further damage💥
Followed by a good wide webbed shoe to help distribute weight / concussion more evenly and to protect the Hoof Wall. It is fitted with a small amount of support as we don’t want to loose this shoe in the field 😖 the primary function of the shoe is to support the Hoof Crack at this moment in time.

As you can also see, I have added an extra clip to the shoe which is located at the base of the crack 🧐 This clip will help support that section of hoof wall and help prevent the Crack from becoming worse / weaker. Now it is a matter of waiting for the Crack to grow out 👍🏻

There are more options which we can look at next time to help further support this foot with modern materials...etc. However, this is a simple but effective way to aid King’s Hoof at this time.

King behaved brilliantly for his first ever pair of shoes ⭐️

Before, during & after shoeing 🔥

An old gentleman of a horse, aged 31. He has a slightly contracted lateral heel quarter.

With regards to his age and light work, it’s all about keeping him comfortable and sound, which he is ✅ “Don’t try to re-invent the wheel”... So a wide webbed shoe fitted with support all around (more laterally), keeping it simple 😃

10/03/2021

Here is a horse I did last week which has a ‘Base Narrow Hind Limb Conformation’ and has ‘scalping interference injuries’ (seen in pictures)...

* There is a medial-lateral imbalance of the foot 👎🏻 Higher medially causing more loading & wearing to occur on the lateral aspect of the hoof (visible by the excess lateral wear of the shoe and the straight medial hoof wall / lateral hoof wall flare).

* It wears (most likely dragging) the toe of the hind feet a lot!🤭 This can be caused by fatigue🥵, conformation abnormalities, laziness😴, underfoot conditions and / or due to ailments🤒the horse may have...etc

🔥🐴 The shoeing plan.... 🐴🔥

Due to the base narrow conformation there will always been excessive loading & compression on the lateral aspect of the hoof which in turn allows the medial aspect to “grow more”.

The foot is trimmed level and balanced accordingly ✅ The shoe has been fitted with a gradual lateral width / length from the quarters to help...

* Support the weakened lateral hoof wall 💪🏻

* Reduce the axial swing (flight) of the limb to encourage a more equal dispersion of loading and compression of the hoof capsule.

* A ‘Set Toe’ is fitted to this horse mainly to protect the hoof wall from excessive wear at the toe.

* The front shoes have been fitted with a small “rocker toe” to help ease break over and to help reduce the risk of scalping.

⁉️Scalping - is when the toe of the front foot strikes into the dorsal (front) surface of the hind hoof / lower limb on the same side⁉️

🔥Please note - This is just a brief description of what is happening and being done. Changing the balance and movement is being done gradually and over multiple shoeings, this is still an ongoing shoeing plan. It will take time to correct the balance and gain a stronger hoof wall. But we are making positive progress 😃

Another happy new client and horse today! 😃

Some ‘Before and After’ pictures of his first shoeing by me 🔥

Note -

• Picture 1 - How the shoe is a more rounder / symmetrical shape / in line with travel which will help distribute weight and concussion more equally ✅

• Picture 2 - The foot is more symmetrical / balanced (Medially & Laterally) which helps the limb to be straighter as you can see ✅

• Picture 3 - Quater Clipped Shoes allows the shoe to be fitted further back which allows the toe to be dressed back to help realign the *Hoof Pastern Axis* (Dorsally & Palmarly) ✅

I have fitted the shoe with support but not too much length at the heels because said horse is apparently prone to pulling shoes. 🤯

There is still a lot more work to be done but this is a good start and I look forward to the future with this one🐴😃

‼️ Taking on new clients, any questions please get in touch ‼️

08/02/2021

Have you ever wondered what a Farrier is looking at to help them determine how to provide the most balanced shoe for your horses foot ? 🥴

Here is an example.... this recently purchased horse (William) arrived with this shoe, seen in Picture 1. Picture 2 is the same foot, but after its first shoeing by myself 🕸

As you can see it already looks more pleasing to the eye. So what helped me decide how this Shoe should be shaped and fitted on to Williams foot? 🤔

Well I have added some ‘guide lines’ which connect many reference points on the horses foot, which should correspond with the Shoe. These line will cross over each other at the ‘centre of the foot’, only if the foot / shoe is well balanced (Anterior- Posterior & Medial - Lateral)

Picture 1 -

As you can see neither the Yellow, Green or Red lines cross over each other in the centre. The heels (Top Blue Line) and the widest points of the foot (Horizontal Yellow Line) are not perpendicular to the central line through the foot (Vertical Yellow Line). The Purple Lines show that the centre of heels do not correspond with the Toe Nail holes of the shoe. All these references points do not correlate with the foot / shoe, which further indicates a poorly fitted shoe which is not providing the correct aid and support. 🤦‍♂️🆘

Picture 2 - Now the Yellow, Green and Red Lines cross over each other in the centre 🙌🏻 The Heels and the widest points of the foot are now perpendicular to the central line. And the Heels are inline with the Toe Nail Holes of the Shoe 👍🏻 Please note how the shoe now has a nicer ‘flow’ to its shape than before ✅

There is still more work to be done, to help provide as much support for William, but as many of you know, these things take time and patience. But I do believe this is a good start for William 🐎

*🔥Please understand that there are many, many more factors which indicate a horses foot shape / balance / movement...etc!

This is only a very, very basic explanation of how a shoe should ideally be fitted. Whilst remembering that every horse and every foot is different and therefore should be treated to the horses individual needs🔥*
