I would just like to take the opportunity to wish all my fantastic loyal clients who have continued to support me and my business for another year.
I have also met some fantastic new clients this year who have also chosen me to treat their horses and ponies.
I really do appreciate you all and hope to see you all next year.
It’s been a busy year for me personally with lots of cpd, lectures and once again attending the TriDent Equine Dental Conference which not only included some great lectures but also a fantastic head dissection presented by lucinda stockley.
This year also saw me stewarding for the Wwaed cat2 practical exams, which saw some very talented EDTs gain their cat2 qualification in equine dentistry.
The year rounded up with another cpd presented by James Roxbrough of equine veterinary dentist Ltd.
All this continued learning gives me the most up to date information which in turn means your equines are given the best possible care.
I wish you all a happy new year, and thank you again.

Great information on bridle fitting and how it sits on the complex nerves of the head.
Another great reason to make sure your horses teeth are the best they can be.
This can only be achieved by regular dentistry from a qualified EDT.
In the uk the only two recognised associations are the WWAED or BAEDT.

I would just like to wish all my fantastic clients a very happy Christmas. Hugo was feeling very festive today too. 🐎🦷

Well done to Samantha Fowler and Micky on this fantastic achievement.
Makes job a whole lot better when you get to treat horses like him and seeing them do so well in their careers. 🐎🦷

Just because there are no outward signs, doesn’t mean it isn’t there!
I have mentioned before that I have seen horses that are eating fine, happy but inside the mouth tells a different story.

As prey animals, horses are programmed to hide pain so that they are not picked off as the weakest of the herd by predators. Some signs of pain are obvious but many can be subtle, low grade and chronic.

There's a super piece of research called the ridden horse ethogram which identifies 24 signs of musculoskeletal pain in ridden horses.

Hopefully this is a massive breakthrough to such an awful disease

One of the most common responses I get when we contact people to let them know their horses are due a dental check up is.
“He/she seems fine and I’m having no issues so I’m going to leave it for now.
Horses are pray animals and will hide issues so they don’t appear weak and end up getting eaten by a lion (they don’t know there are no lions in the uk)!
Below is a picture of a tooth from a talented young show jumper who is Extremely sensitive. Within 6 months this horses tooth had gone from absolutely no sign of any issue to fractured, resulting in a 5 hr procedure to remove the tooth.
If there was my horse I would have thought would have shown an issue it would be this one but nothing, even his very experienced rider said he showed nothing when eating or ridden, in fact he was jumping the best he ever had.
With this also in mind I get to speak to vets, other dentists and even sometimes insurance companies, and it seems they are tightening down on dental visit length and heading towards 6 month checks. If this stipulation is not followed they may not pay out if the is an issue. I also try and attend as much cpd as I can, whether on line or other related lectures and events.
I will always do my best to make sure your Equines receive the best possible care, and try and keep you up to date with the latest information as I hear it to make sure you don’t find yourself in a difficult situation.
With this in mind I will now be recommending all horses are seen 6 monthly from now on, so any changes can hopefully be spotted and treated early.
I have attached the photos of the offering tooth and as you can see it wasn’t an easy extraction.

Back in August I saw a pony, she is a mature lady in her late 30’s.
I hadn’t seen her for a few years due to her being out on loan.
Owner got her back and she was concerned about her weight.
I checked her and found nothing of major concern but did have a couple of minor issues and wasn’t 💯 certain they were causing the weight issues.
Floated her teeth and dealt with these issues. Fast forward to today and I get sent a message with attached photos of how well she’s doing going into winter. And what a transformation it is.
Another reason to use WWAED or BAEDT qualified dentist. And well done to her owner for taking good care of her and getting her to look so fantastic.
Contact me now on 07561 854519 to book your horse pony or Donkey in for their winter check up, to make sure there are no hidden surprises and can get the best out of their feed.

Great day today in Retford for cpd on infundibular caries and their treatment held by wwaed organised by Marcus Headland and delivered by James Roxburgh (equine veterinary dentist Ltd)
Cpd is a great way to not only refresh my knowledge but also lean new procedures and ever evolving techniques, and new ways of thinking.
By doing this you can be sure your equines are in the best possible hands.
Thanks to everyone who made this happen.

I never stray into other professions way of working, but this is something that affects what I do as a qualified EDT.
I am hearing more and more about physios performing a tongue stretch , or tmj alinement or also called a hyoid realignment.
This is a very dangerous practice for which there is no reliable evidence.
If anything this actually can cause a lot of irreversible damage to the Hyoid apparatus.
The Hyoid apparatus is a collection of very delicate bones at the base of the tongue which break very easily and NEVER heal, which can cause your horse to have multiple issues, some threatening the life of your horse.
These include
•Ridden issues
•problems eating, and has been known to not be able to eat at all causing the horse to starve to death.
•un diagnosed pain.
If you are not comfortable with what is happening with your horse, then speak up and don’t allow it to happen.
I have attached a picture of the Hyoid apparatus to show what a delicate collection of bones they are.
This is not attack just an informative post to bring awareness of this practice that appears to be getting more and more popular.

Hi everyone hope you are all well and preparing as the weather starts to change.
Sophie is currently taking a break from sorting out the Admin side of things full time due to having other projects to focus on, this means I will be doing a lot of the bookings etc myself, so bear with me as I’m nowhere near as organised as her and obviously can’t always respond during the day, or straight away, so please be patient, I will get back to you.
If you do need to book an appointment etc please remember to use the the appointments number, not my personal number as your message may get lost.

07561 854519

On that note if you do recommend me, I’m very grateful without you my business wouldn’t have grown the way it has, please pass on the above number, not Facebook messenger etc as again messages get missed.
When you are given a date, please mention at that time if you have any time restrictions as this will help plan the most effective route for that day.
Please also remember payment is to be made at the time of visit, unless otherwise mentioned when booking, I currently have quite a few people owing me money, which affects cash flow in a small business like mine, and also takes up more time checking and chasing.

As we enter the colder months don’t forget to get your horses and ponies checked so they can make the most of the food you are feeding.
Regards Richard. 🐎
