We have to allow dogs to be dogs.
Keep your expectations realistic.

While dog training plays a useful role in building a harmonious relationship with our canine companions, living ethically with dogs also involves respecting their inherent dogness and acknowledging their need to practice natural behaviours. Recognising that dogs have their unique instincts, drives, and desires allows guardians to create an environment that caters to these innate tendencies. By providing opportunities for dogs to engage in species-specific activities such as sniffing, digging, and foraging, we enrich their lives, promote mental well-being, and strengthen our bond with them. In essence, fostering an ethical relationship with dogs goes beyond training, encompassing a profound understanding and appreciation of their true nature.

The ISCP is built on these fundamental ethics. Join us today!

ANYBODY CAN SUPPRESS BEHAVIOUR
THE PERILS OF PUNISHMENT

It’s really easy for anyone to suppress or stop a behaviour by using punishment, force or pain and say that it works, so why even bother to do it differently?

Punishment based methods may well “fix” the behaviour quickly, are far easier, require far less effort, less knowledge, less education, or even just be based on traditional belief, but these methods come at a great cost - destroying trust, creating insecurity, fear, anxiety, provoking aggression, causing dogs to shut down or feel helpless and prevent dogs from learning an alternative, more acceptable behaviour.

“A tradition without intelligence is not worth having” - T. S. Eliot

There is so much scientific evidence to support force free, positive reinforcement methods as being the most effective and successful way to modify behaviour.

There is nothing admirable, ethical or intelligent in physically or emotionally forcing any sentient being to comply.

Take the time and make a commitment to understand and learn about positive, force free, science-based methods.

There is so much information available, if we just take the time to look.

Some days you have to change up the training game.
Lily has been working with me for over a year, she is a pro at the structured walk, she has been my assistant with several dogs, she knows the routine better than I do. So today, we did things a little different. It was about the freedom she has earned getting it right time and time again. Today had nothing to do with structure and a lot to do with ball chasing.

I may be sitting in the shade, but that doesn't mean I am not training a dog.
Lily practiced the fine art of hanging out and watching the world go by.
Dont forget to teach your dog to lay down, relax, and hang out.

Save those empty peanut butter jars!
Here's why 👇
Remove label, remove the lid, give to your dog when you need to occupy them for 20-30 minutes!
Sit back and watch them work. This a great enrichment idea for all dogs.
**disclaimer**
Never leave your dog unattended with any enrichment "toy".
**if your dog is a power chewer, please monitor them!

Play.
Just a few tips for how to help dogs play well and what to keep an eye out for with play.
A really big myth is dogs just know how to play with others....unfortunately many do not.

Healthy play relies on the individual dogs ability to read both vocal, postures and body signals. Unfortunately some dogs have not had the chance to develop healthy play styles....and that is an issue when we expect dogs to play well together.

They struggle to read appropriate play....and they struggle to play appropriately.

You can help your dog and how they interact with others.
Play can be improved and guided by our interventions and watchful eye.

Some common issues with play include the following.......

Letting it go on and on......
You may have noticed this yourself that after 5, 10, 15 minutes it may become faster, far more physical and almost frantic. Nipping may get harder and faster. There is no "order" to playing now. It has changed to over arousal.....and it should stop.
It should have stopped before that stage.
If play is allowed to get to that hyper, frantic play......signals are not given well, and not received well....and that can lead to big issues.

Expecting dogs to play with other dogs.
Dogs do not need to play with other dogs, in fact it is healthy to be choosy with who they interact with.
Dogs have the right to consent to play or not.
Just because we wish them to play does not mean they consent.

Pairing dogs with different play styles and energy can cause big problems...A dog that constantly chases may not read the "cut off" signals given by the less energetic dog.
Being frantically chased is not play.

The time to stop play (as strange as it sounds) is when they are still playing well.....or at the first sign of one dog giving signals it is over for now.
Sniffing.
Scratching.
Walking away.
Seeking you out.
Becoming suddenly very interested in anything other than the dog they were playing with....that helps dogs understand signals given....they will start to make the connection.

Always listen to the little voice inside....and if you are at all unsure, advocate and stop play, or don't allow it to even start.

Never let dogs just "work it out" because they might....and you may not like how some will.

Decompression is key.

It takes a village...
I chose adversive free training because I respected a highly educated veterinarian and what she taught me.
I made Positive reinforcement a lifestyle because I have seen it work over and over and over again (even with highly reactive dogs).
I teach force-free because I believe dogs are more sensitive than we know and they deserve better.
Working with like minded trainers is a must!
We've built each other up and will continue to grow.
