Trailing
How AMAZING is your dog?
Could they find a person up to 0.5km away just by sniffing their scarf or gloves?
I bet they can!
Could they ignore all the smells and distractions around them until they found their person?
I bet they can!
Teach your dog the fun and rewarding activity of finding people through scent and discover just how incredible they are.
Suitable for all ages and abilities. Reactive dog-friendly activity. No specific training required before you start but your dog needs to be able to wear a harness and wait in your vehicle between turns.

LOG TREAT HUNT
Good for:
Impulse control - dog has to wait whilst you put treats out (may need assistant or handy tether point if your dog doesn’t quite have enough impulse control yet)
Calming - engages brain, hits all the brains pleasure centres
Interactive - makes you the source of fun, rather than your dog being focused on people/dogs/squirrels
Low impact - great for dogs that are restricted to lead exercise because of injury/illness
Getting started:
Teach your dog a ’find it’ cue just by tossing a treat on the floor and saying ‘find it’. At first let them see where the treat falls then start tossing treats whilst they are busy eating the previous treat.
Hints:
- Once your dog understands the game be quiet and stay out of their way - let them work at it and just use a continuation marker (ie. a word that means ‘that was good now keep going) each time they find a treat (I use ‘good’).
- Make it clear when they’ve found all the treats so they don’t get frustrated looking for treats that aren’t there - give your reward marker (eg ‘yes’ and/or an end marker ‘that’ll do’ or ‘finished’ etc) and throw a fun party for your dog, lots of praise and fuss.
- Doesn’t have to be a log of course, anywhere where you can lodge treats, like a stone wall or a growing tree with gnarly bark.
Happy treat hunting.
