Himera Custodi Nos, aka ZuZa🌸 is adjusting to her Canadian new life marvellously. ZuZa meaning a graceful lily🪷 has been a perfect addition to the CSCC crew. She is one of the most laid back, quiet dogs in the house I’ve ever witnessed but no slouch to strangers. She is so happy, stoic, loving and such an amazing kind momma. 🫶🏼
On top of that, she has entered in to a Cane Corso household, exhausted from a massive trip, with strange people, full of hormones, had babies, difficulty with pregnancy, a brand new home, new language, and additionally a home where the Queen doesn’t open her doors up easily to new dogs but they all meshed right away and so simply. It’s like she’s always been here 🥰.
Looking forward to getting this girl on some adventures this coming year as she deserves a baby break🩷 and looking forward to what she can bring to my program in the near future, she’s a special one😍

Attention💢It is not challenging or difficult to health test and be educated in the possible health complications/ issues within the breed of the Cane Corso when you are ethical, and have the best intentions for the breed preservation.💥

This article is fantastic, easy to read and explains ‼️

Those who choose to not test because they think their invincible or "their lines don't have it" or "their dogs are healthy” or the best one yet "I took my dog to the vet, it’s health tested”…. spend the $100.00 and get the testing done on each of your dog(s).🧪

Our beautiful families🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 we welcome into our furr family and their happiness/ love they give to our babies are worth more than being selfish by not health testing.

📍I'm now going on my third generation of DSRA/NCL clear dogs when most breeders haven't even tested any of their dogs and are breeding them when they damn well know about this hereditary and know what this horrible disease can do💔

Some words from a reputable breeder themselves…

If only families knew just a fraction of the blood, sweat, tears, money and heartache that goes into being a breeder, let alone a reputable, ethical one… Long before their very own puppy of their dreams become “theirs” they are our dreams, our hopes💭 and plans (present & future) we have been working, studying and researching on for generations… they are our years of hard work and investment, emotionally, financially, physically and spiritually.
They are a piece of us from the moment they are born into this world🌍 Long before they are entrusted to you, they are OURS. They are an extension of us and our name.🌱
Long before they become part of your family, they were born into ours first and hold a special place in our hearts. Some days are perfect and filled with adorable puppies running across green grass to you like something out of a fairytale.🧚‍♀️ And some days are filled with so much heartache and doubt to which we wonder if we can keep going. Life can definitely be cruel, and breeding responsibly is not for the weak, but it can also be so beautiful and rewarding🌼
Those beautiful moments, are the ones we treasure that keep us going🎀. Without those, no one would survive the dark days a breeder sees and your dogs/ family members simply wouldn’t exist.
A reputable breeder will give you the support, will help you whenever, where ever, will have your back, encourage and love with professionalism to set you up for success as that’s what we love to see. 💖But, if you disrespect, go against contract signed or mistreat the breeders babies they will hunt you down, stand behind their ethics and not give up a fight for stupidity, self righteousness and ignorance, as it is there to serve a purpose and protect the dog, name and preservation for the breed👊🏼

New Girl on the Block has arrived 🦋 After 5 days of travel from a road trip🚗from Serbia to Italy, to the first plane ride to Amsterdam, day layover due to plane malfunction on connecting flight, to finally landing in Ontario, Canada! ✈️
The pregnant Momma arrived 🩷
Himera is happy to be home, sweet as ever, another love bug in the house and adapted really fast to the spoiled house dog role as if she’s always been here🥰 We have lots of work to do including learning English but blessed to have this gem!

Now let’s see these beautiful babies in a few weeks time🤩

Huge thank you to my Flight Nanny, Federico for another job well done with outstanding service, communication and looking after this girl.
Big thanks again to Nenad at kennel for parting with this sweet, special girl🙏🏼

So soo sooo important ❣️

When you get your 8 week old puppies, please keep these images in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

When you're letting your puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.

The Mighty Cane Corso’s “Sixth Sense” for Threat Detection
To understand the Cane Corso’s unparalleled ability to detect threats, you have to live with them daily, observing their intricate behavioral patterns and deeply ingrained instincts. Most Cane Corso owners might assume their dog’s natural alertness is simply part of their guarding instinct, but the reality is far more complex. The breed possesses an almost uncanny ability to assess subtle changes in their environment and people around them—something only those who work intimately with the breed, day in and day out, fully comprehend.

At its core, the Cane Corso’s threat detection is not a learned behavior but a deeply ingrained instinct, passed down from their days as guardians of Roman estates and battlefields. This sensitivity stems from centuries of selective breeding for war and protection, finely tuning their senses to anticipate and neutralize threats before they even materialize.

Reading Micro-Expressions and Body Language

Cane Corsos don't just monitor their surroundings; they constantly read the body language of both familiar and unfamiliar humans and animals. This ability goes beyond what a casual observer might notice. For example, while other breeds might focus on loud noises or overt actions, the Cane Corso often responds to subtle changes—micro-expressions in a stranger’s face, slight shifts in posture, or the way someone walks. If you’ve spent enough time with the breed, you’ll notice that their focus intensifies when they sense a discrepancy between someone’s appearance and their body language. A person who seems friendly but whose energy betrays nervousness or tension might elicit a deep, low growl from a Cane Corso long before any human would detect discomfort.

Their ability to observe and respond to these micro-signals is part of their layered guarding instinct, and their owner doesn’t always have to give them a cue. Experienced Cane Corso handlers will notice this shift in behavior right away—the tightening of the posture, the narrowing of their eyes, and the way their body weight subtly adjusts, ready to act. These aren’t mere “triggers” but responses to a perceived imbalance in their environment. This is a skill no amount of training can replicate—it’s hardwired.

Emotional Resonance with Their Owner

Beyond external cues, Cane Corsos are known for their deep bond with their owners, a connection so strong that it allows them to mirror their owner's emotional state. Those who spend extensive time with the breed will attest that Cane Corsos are hypersensitive to their owner’s emotions, particularly in high-stress situations. If their owner is uneasy or feeling threatened, even subtly, the Cane Corso will pick up on it immediately. It’s not about body language alone; it’s about energy. A Cane Corso can feel the shift in your mood, and that shift causes a change in their behavior.

You might notice this most when they are around strangers. A confident, calm owner will often lead to a calm Cane Corso, but if the owner tenses up, the Cane Corso becomes alert and wary, positioning themselves strategically between you and the perceived threat. This is an instinctive response, honed through generations of guarding homes and families. It’s the kind of intelligence that’s hard to see in the moment but becomes apparent when you observe how consistently they mirror your emotional state, ready to take action if you signal even the slightest bit of unease.

Environmental Mastery

Unlike most guard dogs that rely primarily on sight and sound, the Cane Corso utilizes all of its senses in unison, making them incredibly aware of their environment. Their sense of smell is particularly fine-tuned—able to pick up on the scent of adrenaline or fear in humans, allowing them to detect threats before they’re visible or audible. When walking a Cane Corso, you might notice how they lift their head slightly, not just to look around, but to scent the air. This behavior is deeply instinctual, tied back to their hunting and guarding origins.

Additionally, Cane Corsos excel in spatial awareness. They are constantly mapping out their surroundings, even in familiar places, positioning themselves where they can monitor the most activity. When they’re in a home, they’ll often lie in areas where they can see multiple rooms at once or place themselves near entry points. Outside, you’ll notice how they’ll stop at an elevated spot or turn frequently during walks, ensuring they’re always aware of what’s behind and ahead. This vigilance isn’t the result of nervousness—it’s calculated and purposeful, a behavior bred into them for centuries to protect what’s theirs.

Judging Intent, Not Just Actions

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Cane Corso’s sixth sense is their ability to distinguish between neutral and malicious intent. Experts who handle these dogs daily will tell you that the breed doesn’t just react to actions but evaluates the intent behind them. A stranger could approach casually, and the Cane Corso would remain relaxed. However, if that same stranger approaches with hidden aggression or tension, the Cane Corso will shift into defense mode immediately.

This isn’t just a reaction to visible cues but to something more primal—an ability to read the “energy” of a person, something only seasoned Cane Corso owners learn to recognize. It’s the difference between a dog barking at every passerby and a dog that only alerts when there’s a genuine need for concern. Owners who are in constant contact with their Cane Corsos will note how they develop a nuanced understanding of friend versus foe, not through direct training but through their natural instinct to protect their pack.

Subtle Warning Signs

Another layer to the Cane Corso’s threat detection is their ability to communicate warnings without being overtly aggressive. While many people see guard dogs as reactive, Cane Corsos often give subtle signals before escalating. An experienced Cane Corso handler will recognize these signals immediately—the way their tail stiffens, the deepening of their breathing, or the slight raising of their hackles. These are nuanced behaviors that go unnoticed by casual owners but are clear markers to those in tune with the breed.

In fact, the Cane Corso’s willingness to hold off on direct aggression, despite their capacity for it, is one of their most valuable traits. They’d rather give clear warnings, using their intimidating presence as a deterrent, than engage unnecessarily. This restraint comes from centuries of selective breeding for intelligence and control, making them reliable guardians who act with precision rather than impulse.

In conclusion, the Cane Corso’s "sixth sense" is not just a function of their physical presence but an intricate combination of instinct, sensory perception, and a deep emotional connection with their owner. Those who live with Cane Corsos daily understand that this breed doesn’t just react—it calculates, anticipates, and defends with an unparalleled level of sophistication that goes beyond mere guarding behavior.

About Us

We are a small hobby breeder in Caledonia, Ontario focusing on producing top quality and healthy athletic Cane Corso all originating from strong European bloodlines.

I was first introduced to this Breed in the year of 2015 and have not looked back since. I care deeply about this breed and love producing top quality family members. Although we are new to breeding ourselves, I was raised in a very professional household that breeds top of the line German Shepherds & Cane Corso and am excited to have the opportunity to breed on my own and share this great breed with others who love them.

I am a member of the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) and our dogs are registered and health tested using OFA/Pennhip before being bred. I am active with our dogs; they come with us when we horse trail ride but when it comes to performing events we do obedience and soon will be in the confirmation ring. All of our puppies are whelped and raised in our home where they get to experience interaction with us, and other animals (ie: Dogs, Horses and Cats).

At Canadian Shield Cane Corso, our potential puppy buyers will be screened and if they succeed they will be placed with a puppy that will match the responsible owners accordingly. We offer a 24 month health guarantee as well as lifetime breeder support. Ear Cropping can be done upon request but must be done at 7 weeks and is an additional charge.
