Reactive canine behavior characterized by barking, lunging, and growling is not indicative of disobedience, malicious intent, or a desire for dominance. Nor is it a phase that the dog will outgrow. Reactivity is, in fact, a stress response. When a dog exhibits reactive behaviors, it is a clear indication that something in their environment has triggered stress. Consequently, the dog is unable to learn and respond to training. Furthermore, attempting to assert dominance or punishing the dog will only exacerbate stress and reactivity. Just because you have a small breed dog, doesn’t mean they cannot participate in obedience training. They are able to walk beside you on a loose leash, they can learn to sit, lie down, and perform various other tasks.
